Help me to become a mes?
First mistake you made:
“I decided to be a mesmer because I heard they were pretty good in combat and WvW.”
A class being good does not mean you are going to be good at that class. Becoming a good player takes time and effort, more than just a week of play is going to have earned you. You will get better, but only if you work at it. Learn the class, watch other players, anything. It’s more than just saying “Hey this class is strong I’ll be able to win with it.”
When you lose in pvp, look at what you did wrong. Were you being unaware of incoming enemies? Were you just mindlessly spamming skills? Were you lining clones on the right target to shatter?
Use each match as a learning tool, every battle as experience of what you should have done and what you still have to learn.
You can use the strongest class with the strongest set up and if you don’t know how to use it you’ll still lose.
Watch how other mesmers play in youtube. Then get an idea of how to manage your skills. It’s not all about making clones and shattering. Don’t blow all your skills right away. And to do that, make a build that supplements your skillset, so that you won’t have to spam all your skills right away—if for some reason you did well and hit your opponent with your skills but they’re all in cooldown, then what?
Also, learn to position yourself. Your opponents are also looking for you. Kite around with crippling abilities, use your clones to perhaps block for you or confuse enemies—basically, all of your mesmer gadgets have more to it. You will learn as you play more of course.
You said, you get owned? Perhaps you don’t have enough toughness/vitality. That GS sword/focus usually comes with power/prec/crit damage, leaving you squishy; it is hard to play squishy as a newbie. I suggest using a tanky build to get the hang of combat because you won’t get used to the gameplay by dying too fast anyway. That all is assuming you run a squishy build(also called berzerker).
Good Luck.
Il add my tutorials, might help.

the 20/20/0/0/30 is a shatter burst build. Burst damage means you do as much damage as quick as possible when your opponent is most vulnerable, or just when you can hit them! The greatsword is good for sustained damage, which is not what your build was designed for, im not saying it doesnt work, because it does for some people.
with the greatsword your damage timeline would look like: massive(shatter) – medium – medium- medium – massive (shatter)
but if you swapped the greatswordfora staff it would be: massive(shatter) – low -low -low -massive (shatter).
if i say it like this, greatsword mayseem like the best option, but let me explain the difference. staff has more defence, due to the phase retreat, chaos armor and storm etc. If you switched greatsword forstaff, you would get defence when you most need it, when your shatter (core of the build) is on cooldown!
To make it even better, you can switch 20 from domination to chaos to get lower staff cooldowns! While domination has more damage, chaos holds more defence. Both are viable, it just depends on what you feel more comfortable with.
Oh, make sure you carry blink and decoy!
As someone said, you can watch videos of mesmersplaying to get a feel of what they do.
Always plan ahead, dont go close to someone and use a shatter burst if you dont have a defensive skillavailable! cooldown management is one of the msot important aspects of mesmering ^__^
Heres my latest video at the time of writing:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K5Wsql5HZfY
Notice how i always have defensive skills available (if i dont kitten up) when i do a shatter burst. Right after the burst i teleport out, stealth etc. Try to get a feel of how long your cooldowns are, and try to use them only when really needed.
Ofcourse, im asking fora lot here, but dont worry! Because all this comes with experience, and experience comes with time!
While i dont like admitting gear is important, well, it is important. http://en.gw2skills.net/editor/?fgAQNAsdWl0zKqHTTrGb9IiJFEHyh6B2BefXJF82FC-jkDBYLERjUEgkFBK5ZIrJQRsipIas6aYqTAKXJV7CSFD2eDyIWZ1bAQIgRjBA-w
Heres my full build i use in WvW roaming, used for fighting multiple enemies at a time and designed for mobility, including gear!
Sorry for the huge wall of text, but i hope it helps!
Cheers,
