hey, i’m running a build i got form osicat. but i changed a few things. http://en.gw2skills.net/editor/?fgAQNAsdWlwzyqHTzoGb9IiJF9Gyh6B4ldfXJF82FC-j0zAocIsFA+CkEFIiAYyTgN9hlATUFsIasKGMVJq+EW7GINMi7I1CBMaBA-w

i’m a big wvw fann, and planning to buy the commander tag. but is this build a good wvw leader build? i use it in big zergs and smaller fights even 1v1’s. but is there a build that only fits in big zergs? or is this build good to? i’m pretty new to mesmers so i need to learn the traits and skills etc a bit more

Too much squishy for a commander. With the tag, you have to be the last guy who dies, cause you’re leading all the rest of people.

I wouldn’t carry any berserker gear and as much of soldier and sentinel as you can. Also, having focus without its trait is a bit fail.

As a mesmer and being a commander, I would focus more on team support and glamour than rather a shatter zerker.

+1

Go full tank, personal survivability should be your first worry as commander.

Then you can think about the rest of build – Veil and group utility are good ideas, but remember again: you must be the last one going down, charging first in the middle of the enemy and get out of it alive.

Seafarer’s Rest EU – PvE/WvW – 8 × 80 chars.
Most used: Guard/Mes/War/Nec/Ele.
Yes, i use 5 chars at time. Because REASONS.

+1 full bunker/tank. Commander goes down, all is lost, except with really organized pro wvw guilds.

I wouldn’t get a commander tag on my mesmer in the first place, but if I absolutely had to I’d go with build like 0/10/30/30/0 full survivability mode.

Only exception is Cavalier 1H weapons and Ascended pieces just b/c the Crit Dmg % on those is such a good deal in terms of stat point cost. But if that doesn’t matter to you, then full Sentinels or Soldiers for every piece. Don’t worry about damage, your zerg brings that, but only as long as you’re alive to direct it. Otherwise it all falls apart.

Well I would recommend you use are comfortable with. Even with a tank build, you might not be used to it. At least with something you are familiar with. You might be able to find ways to counter opponents. And frankly i’ve seen zerkers be the last man standing b4 so it isn’t possible

I’m running pretty much full zeker (with a little tough and vital), works for me.

How to crashreport…
Someone say game crash must be related to OOM
when you read the log it’s not related to that whatsoever…

You may want to look into prismatic understanding with the recent buff. If you open with 2-3 veils on the initial push you’re going to stack a ton defensive buffs otw in. I ran that in zerg this weekend and it’s pretty awesome for survival.

I would base the build entirely on the Prismatic Understanding trait. For weapons I’d go Staff + Scepter/Torch. Utility I’d go Veil, Decoy, Null Field, and Mass Invis. Grab Glamour Mastery and… perhaps 20 in Inspiration and 20 in Domination to trait your Scepter and Focus. I think your tag is still visible when stealthed so this build would allow you to lead, but not be targted most of the time.

Taking scepter for a tanky commander build is unbelievably foolish. It has no good defense. You take mainhand sword for the mobility and strong active defense.

Fair enough Pyro. If you went sword then perhaps go 20(V,IX)/10(IV)/30(IV,X,XII)/10(II)/0. Granted, the biggest weakness here is lack of stability and the only way to get it by youself on a mesmer is via mantra.

Perhaps you could setup some kinda super tanky mantra build for it. The +400 toughness is pretty sweet. Forget doing any damage though since you’ll just be spamming mantras the whole time. At least with guardian you can spam staff 1 occasionally to get tags.

Honestly, I’m thinking something more along the lines of full sentinels with melandru runes using prismatic understanding, sword/torch + staff. You’d be getting a lot of protection, and you don’t really need to do damage, so you’d have no problem sitting in stealth all the time while at the same time providing less of a visible target for the enemy.

Traits would be something like 0/10/30/30/0. You could go with decoy, mantra of pain, and veil/portal/feedback. You could also go only 20 into inspiration and 20 into dueling to pick up both sword cooldowns and mantra toughness., and then you could grab your mender’s purity and restorative mantras from the inspiration line.

Ok here I go

Commanding doesn’t require any class or any build, infact the majority of the time your lucky to do more than an initial attack and then autoattacking, since your headspace and eyespace is about the battlefield, your people, the enemies people and of course the mind of the enemy commander.

Tanky gear is there to make the above easier, but it is far from needed if you can do the above and use the multitudes of active defence that us Mesmers have. So yes, going tanky helps if your newer into commanding and need that extra passive support to keep you alive, but it is far from a requirement to command

Now to answer your original question on if its a good leader build or what is a good leader build, honestly, its time you forgot about your build and started to look at who you are leading’s builds. 95% of the tactics that I bring into WvW are tailored to the group composition I am running with, tailored to the builds they are running and maximizing what I have, Sure I’m used to running with 10 mesmers, but if that group changes and now ive got 3 thieves, 2 engys 2 guardians 2 rangers and 1 mesmer, my tactics and the group will not work to the best of their ability and most likely will fall short of expectations. What build do I run for commanding? I’ll give you three choices that I feel are the best answer to that question:

1. A build that can fire and forget, some people have suggested tanky, active defence, high mobility, basicly anything that lets you not have to concentrate on doing straight up damage, it just happens. For the newer commanders, that need to concentrate more on surroundings.

2. A Support build, most support builds are designed to synergise well with all other builds, this way you will always have a build that suits the group composition and helps your group.

3. A specific build that you design your tactics around. This works if you have the ability to influence those following you to modify their builds to suit a specific core.

Finally, does a commander need to always be in the front and lead the charge? Well not really, but it depends on who your leading, and what level of rapport/respect/following you have. I’ve talked about it in my commander podcasts on sittingonacouch.com that commading is more about the people who are following you and less about you in particular, you want to be a great commander, don’t worry about the builds, the gear, work on your leadership qualities, charisma, rapport building, thats infinetly more important than a build or a piece of equipment.
