Looking at current GW2 shield abilities: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Shield
Guardian
Warrior
Engineer
We can see that the effects are:
Basically, a defensive / CC weapon … but on a class that can LOS, kite, etc. while their illusions continue to deal damage. This is something that separates the Mesmer from these other three classes that can currently use a Shield.
Thus, while I’m disappointed that it’s not a ranged power weapon for my main-hand, I am curious what it will do for Mesmers.
Maybe revenant will have shield too, so maybe a new skill from revenant.

I don’t think they give two professions the exact same skill.
Though that would be an awesome replacement for the current incarnation of Mimic :-)
“Something just as good”. Hmm. Considering history with the mesmer class, i think the Port Spot “bug fix” qualifies for this.
Jokes aside, i’m hoping for some cool mechanic replacing clones/phantasms or shatters. As long as it is active and not condi based, i’ll be happy!
I wouldn’t hold my breath on the mechanic changing.
When they showed the Ranger as a Druid with a staff, they still had their same class mechanic (Ranger pet)
Really….
I mean, really?
Shield is nice, I’m happy to get it, it’s one of my top picks for new weapons… but this class is swimming in off-hands already, meanwhile it’s in desperate need of more main hands.
I really hope whatever this “something just as good” is will be something that alleviates the lack of main-hands.
No matter how good or interesting the “new” thing is, it all seems in vain if they don’t address the more fundamental problems.
It’ll probably be fun, and I’ll probably be happy to get it, but if I’m still stuck with sword and scepter as my only options alongside a growing plethora of off-hands, then I’ll still be faced with the same old problem.
Given how mesmers usually get treated? Polymorph Moa will become self-target, thus granting us the equivalent of five ‘extra’ weapon skills. Problem solved.
Or maybe they’ll give us something like a tome or something.

Hmmm. Speculation on what they could possibly put on a mesmer F5? That could be pretty awesome actually.
