Mesmers are terrible relative to other professions in the first half of the game, then they become fairly powerful endgame. But when it comes to DPS output, they aren’t going to be even comparable to the monster truck that is a warrior. Mesmer’s strength in PvE is due to their utility, and that if well played can dodge attacks very well. And mesmers still get a role in dungeon rush teams thanks to time warp, which makes farming gold easier than 6 other professions.

It’s a very fun class. You start out very frail, a result of comparatively long CDs on abilities which are not strong at all (this is partially based on PvP issues with these abilities).

However, early on Sword+Focus can do a lot of good, usually with Staff as a secondary weapon as soon as you can equip it (giving you solid defence).

Once you have 20 points in Dueling you can freely create clones by dodging, and that changes things. A lot.

Still, it’s a fairly weird class. We have some really powerful skills, a mere handful. The rest is woefully underpowered, and the same goes for traits. In addition, many abilities powerful in PvP, like Moa, Veil, Portal, SoIllusions, Mass Invis, they are virtually unusable in PvE due to balance issues or sometimes even bugs.

Style-wise, huge bonus points though, dual-sword melee combat on a clothie caster which explodes into pink butterflies and glass shards? It looks soooooo awesome! :O

Not as bad as everyone makes out in 1-40; just go out there and play – will make you better with the abilities.

Easy from 40-80 (apart from some encounters which are tough regardless of class – but then it’s pretty easy to avoid all that with blink/stealth/dodge…).

Dps might seem lackluster initially – you may need to put in more effort for a given outcome. But with time/traits/gear you can get respectable dps with plenty of utility.

From what I can see my Mesmer will not hit as hard as my warrior running similar builds. That being said in terms of what it can do solo and what it adds to the team it feels like it is in a very good spot.

that is soooo untrue. This is where i wish we could see our dps at the end of a dungeon run because i believe a shatter mez with useful utilities such as feedback outdamages most everyone including 100swag spammers. If you’re doing low level fractals or easy dungeons where you can faceroll on melee without ever worrying then a warrior may be better but do 40+ fotm and mez will outdamage any warrior builds.

SoIllusions is usable in PvE. Just slap on a Defender and you’re good to go, Phantasmal Retaliation is optional.

Mesmer in PvE its the best of non OP classes

That means its not comparable to war and guards….but its quite good compared to any other profession.

That mostly because iWarden can deals lot of damage to stupid AI and when it fails you can probably keep up 3 duelists

And that paired with an awesome reflect uptime….

P.S: i played PvE shatter full dps mesmer for months….
Its uberbad for pve (except for aoes capabilities)
try Phantasm it deals about 20% more with much less risk and more utilities

GW2 balance:
A PvE player is supposed to avoid a 1-2 second 1 shotting aoe.
A WWW player is considered uncapable of avoiding a 5,75 second aoe for half his health.

Out of curiosity, why does everyone say Mesmers are bad till 40? What happens at 40 that suddenly makes em EZ? I just hit 31 and I haven’t had any troubles yet. Hardest part was 2-8 when I was still unlocking skills and weapon abilities.

Because mesmer is designe with a quite crappy baseline of skills power, which is compensated by some incredibly god traits and trait line.

At 40 you’ll be able to deep till 20 pts…which mean, usually, till Deceptive evasion + Sharpening Images.
It’s a turning point, because you finally get a non weapon/utlity CD related clone generation tool and stacking bleeding opportunity trough phants.

I can tell you how good mesmers are. At level 54, 5 days after the game’s pre-release, I soloed my first champion. That was when I was a complete noob, insisting on having a signet build, couldn’t care less about deceptive evasion and I felt clones were trash.

Today, there are very, very few champions that I can’t solo and that list is constantly growing shorter.

Deceptive Evasion happens.
It’s a giant crux, plenty of our setups rely upon it, and they’d be far too weak without it. I really would prefer to see it removed and our base clone generation increased to compensate, but let’s see what this month’s trait pass brings.

It’s not a bad trait in itself (should be GM I suppose due to the gameplay-changing effect it has), but we are too low on clones baseline, that is the issue.

mesmer easily outdps elementalist

The game is not only CoE and CoF.

Also phantasm = more sustained dps than shatter

I play fotm most (lvl 48)
I used shatter mesmer for long and an ele (various builds)
Ele is durable (zerker) but lacks attack reliability…..and its risky.
Shatter mesmer is too risky for really almost any reward

I changed to phantasm mesmer recently…where i struggled to keep a shatter mesmer alive at 26 now i easily play 48 with awesome dps (much much more than my zerker ele and 10-20% + than shatter mesmer).
Its all about the build

Somehow even at 48 seems mobs and bosses can t easily deal with phantasms….
You can still read my thread asking for help last week…

I never touched my ele since then and i don t plan to do it…..there is really too much difference.
(not that mesmer is op in pve but at least is balanced)

P.S: i use the phantasm pve build of this section…its really awesome
Worth really a try it changed my view of pve mesmer….

Mesmer is on line with Guard for dmg, most of the times.
Thief decently geared/built for dps beats both from a quite long shot.
Nobody beats War DPS.

Ele is just too niche and ureliable to me, for being considered on par with guard/mes.
It’s not matter of sheer numbers.

I’m pretty sure they can at least out damage guardians if they have three wardens spinning on the mob. It might get close to warriors actually, but then there is the problem of actually pulling that off.
