How are we in Dungeons, Boss/Dragon fights?
Any maybe overall PvE
hi, there’s a list of guides stickied at the top of the forum
Phantasms provide okay dps by themselves, so being able to have (and maintain) 3 of them will give you a rather high dps rate. The drawbacks for phantasms, though, are that they are (1) able to be killed and (2) require time to get 3 up at once and have your “optimal” dps rate.
In dragon fights, you will do very well. The iWarlock, in particular, is AMAZING during these fights. It gets 10% bonus damage per unique condition, and since you have a huge group of players killing the dragons, they will immediately have and maintain at least 5 conditions, normally higher. If you can maintain 3 of them for any decent amount of time, you will get gold contribution without even attacking yourself (I’ve done it, and I have almost no additional power from gear or traits). In addition, you have Time Warp and whatever other phantasms you want to use- iSwordsman and iDuelist are both pretty awesome too. You will never have to worry about contribution as a mesmer. (so for weapons, I recommend staff for the Warlock, then whatever weapon for whatever other phantasms you want).
Non-Dragon Boss fights are pretty much the same thing. If the fight is long enough for you to get multiple phantasms up, you basically negate their drawbacks and can have a very high dps.
Mesmers are a bit weak against trash mobs in dungeons, but can provide some awesome utility to the group to compensate- Feedback, Null Field, Signet of Inspiration, clones/phantasms to soak up damage, Chaos Armor from your etheral fields make teammates love you, etc. You’ll feel useful enough, and portal will help speed up dungeon times once you learn how to use it. Against the bosses, again, you have the time to build up your army of phantasms. Time Warp is awesome, as always, and you can still have your group utility.
So basically, you’ll be awesome against the bosses, and okay for the rest of the dungeon.
The general rule of thumb is that mesmer = amazing against single targets and meh against groups (with the exception of glamour builds in WvW, of course! :P ). Overall, if you enjoy the gameplay once you hit around level 40-50, you’ll enjoy it in the rest of the content. You can be at least moderately useful anywhere, regardless of your build. So for those three aspects of play, you should be more than satisfied with sticking with your mesmer

Mesmer is awesome for PvE, at least in my experience. Shatter build is a lot of fun, and does great damage. I never have problems getting gold on events, and I’m highly useful in dungeons.
For the dragons, iZerker is actually the best. Warlocks will do the highest damage in theory, but if you target the head and put iZerkers on it, they will sit in midair and never take damage, allowing you to never have to worry about recasting them or losing dps due to lag.

The point is that phantasms do awesome damage against the dragons, so you’ll always do well. Personally, I’ve never had any problems with iWarlock dying- they usually die off one at a time, at a rate that my cooldowns can easily keep up with. But really, any offensive phantasm (but the iMage) will do fine against the dragons, even if iZerker gets to cheat :P
