How do you beat a mesmer in WvW (not a QQ)
The phant spec is op in 1v1, so unless if you are traited for duels, just get out if you are alone. Its unlikely that the mesmer is mobile enough to properly chase you.
Which class do you play? I’d recommend severely different tactics based off that.
Play a Necro. put all condition on Mesmer use fear don’t give time to get clones the Mesmer will melt in seconds .

Keep distance from necro and send out 2 phantasms from 1200 and watch him die as he chases you. Same thing works on condi engis.
The trick is called CC and melee. Even melee Mesmers (ie sword) are hard countered by in-your-face dps, especially when lacking the staff as secondary. Most rely on combat space and dodges to survive so you need to take that factor way.
Probably the worst thing you can is to try and win a max range duel with a good Mesmer. Only another Mesmer can do that, lol. If you keep chasing a Mesmer but sort of stay between ranged and melee because you cant catch them, you’re probably gonna loose the fight as well.
roll a memser, go into a dueling arena, and then duel a mesmer. Until you’ve played as a mesmer and then played against a mesmer with the ability to see their build you’ll never remember how to fight one. Granted, once you’ve done that you’ll never go back to playing all those other classes.

Some people might tell you otherwise, but i would focus down the phantasms (with the exception of iWarden, iWarlock and iMage) as soon as possible. The mesmer alone usually isn’t much of a threat and highly predictable.

Depends…if the necro manages to hit you with a medium-long duration chill, Dark Path or Spectral Grasp, you are in trouble most of the time. Apart from that, necros are quite doable UNLESS they manage to hit you with Signet of Spite which is too much for a mesmer to handle properly.
/edit: Generally spoken, the mesmer class highly profits from obstacles, opportunities to LoS and different height levels. The more even and plain the area, the harder it’s for the mesmer.

If you stand on a slope, their sword skills will glitch and stop working. True story.
Depends on the build, and level of skill.
I suggest bringing friends for maximum gankage.

This will never work against a good Necro. In a 1v1 where both players are of equal skill, the Necro will win majority of the time, even against a phantasm spec, assuming most Mesmers run one or no cleansing utilities.
Dark Path = 9 seconds of chill
Chillblains = 7 seconds of chill
Grasping Dead = 9 seconds of cripple
Signet of Spite = 17 seconds of crippleThis is only with Rare Veggie Pizza and no condi duration runes or gear, which would increase those numbers further. If the Necro lands even one of those, you’re going to get melted. Signet of Spite in particular is going to shut an enemy Mesmer down extremely fast, which is why I always use it against them on my Necro, and do everything I can to avoid it on my Mesmer (which is also a phantasm build).
The kiting tactic is good in theory, but if you get a Necro that knows what they’re doing, and are familiar with the Mesmer, you’re more often than not going to lose.
And yet you have very experienced mesmers on this forum who’ll testify to being able to beat any necro regardless of the build/skill.
Funny that.
@jaif You’ll probably see other threads in this forum on fighting mesmers – lots of people help. One thing that’s important is separating the person from the illusions.
Phantasms are glowy white. They don’t look like the player at all. But they can do some damage. If I see a berserker or duelist phantasm, I try to take it out.
Clones look like the player. But they won’t have food buffs on them. If you’re tabbing through, the one that has the most buffs is the most stuff below is almost always the player. The other thing is that clones mostly stand still, and they never dodge. Lastly, if you see a bunch of copies of the character running toward you, try to dodge roll through them. They are trying to shatter on you for damage or some other effect.
I think the rest is mostly just practice.
