Hey guys!

I have been playing this great game since headstart and have all the classes decked out in at least full exotic gear, even have some multiples of certain classes. Recently tried to get a grasp on Engineer so I leveled another for the experience.

The thing is, I absolutely loved GW1 mesmer and I understood that class. I absolutely love the aesthetics of GW2 mesmer, the mind tricks and got the Minstrel for my Norn mesmer.

But I just don’t know and don’t understand how to mesmer in GW2. I always feel more useful as another class and I have issues with taking other utility skills of the mesmer. I almost see no other reason to take other utilities apart from Blink, the double clone stunbreak and the random third utility to synergise with your build (often Veil, condi cleanse or damage mantra for me).

So I ask of you, ladies and gentlemen of the finer magical arts, how do you mesmer?

I want to love the mesmer profession but the mindset of a mesmer is lacking.

TL:DR I love the mesmer looks and skills but I have no idea how to be useful as one, in solo play or teamplay. Bonus: chronomancer looks massively confusing!

It all depends whether you want to go for raw damage or condi damage.
You could even play support though it’s even trickier and with the current state of healing power not rewarding enough (even though it does heal a pretty decent amount still!).

Mesmer has a few specialties. I won’t go into what all other classes can do (such as doing raw damage and spamming autohits).

First mesmer has a lot of synergy with interrupting your foe. Any spell that knock down, daze or stun ennemy works. If you look carefuly you’ll realize that the mesmer can effectively interrupt a LOT his opponent if you time well your interruptions. If you go for raw damage you can get a trait doing damage for each interruption + weakness, if you go for condi you can add aoe confusion on it among other things.

Then you have your clones, it’s all about whether keeping them or not and when shattering them. Overall raw power build tend to shatter clones occasionally (basically when F1 cd is ready and 2-3 clones are up and/or to use specific situation, such as using F3 to interrupt a special attack, or F4 for last minute survivability). Condi build tends to spam more the F1-4 since it can in total applies 2 stacks of confusion, one stack of torment and one stack of blindness for each explosion + the confusion and torment from clones aswell (one stack each). Just be careful not to shatter phantasms too quickly otherwise you’ll waste some potential, on condi build I tend to shatter them right after their first attack, sometimes later but they don’t do enough damage to waste time and not shater them quickly.

As for utilities there is some very odd one (such as the VERY risky revive spell) but a lot can be very useful depending on the situation. The aoe to remove condi and boons is extremly useful in any gamemode, the phantasm doing the same thing bouncing is very useful aswell, the defensive phantasm can be extremly useful in team. I do think that the two utilities you talked about are the less useful because they are extremly selfish and are used solely to cover a mistake you made while the others have some effectiveness you bring on the table. Blinking is really useful only for running scenarios and to save you from a tight spot, which shouldn’t happen if you are careful (in PvP it’s different I agree, but I still think Blink shouldn’t be used that much on most builds).

I can’t give much more informations since you haven’t told us what kind of build you want to go to. My biggest advice is to find one concept you want to do, dealing damage, applying condis, supporting etc. Then you look for the best weapons to suit that playstyle, then you look at the specialisations helping you the most for that purpose etc. Doing everything one by one will make you realize there is a lot of hidden synergies very interesting.

Your choice of utility seem to indicate you are discussing PvP, so here it goes.

The key is to define the role you want to take. Mesmer in PvP is often used for its burst damage and mobility, to take down very fast an enemy player on a point away from the main team fight, usually in solo or preferably duo (thief/mesmer is a deadly duo). For this role, you can play stealthy (sword/torch-GS, blink/decoy either portal or a condi cleanse depending on your needs and traits), you can play more interrupt-focused (some combination of sword/pistol, GS and staff, blink/mantra distraction, probably using inspiration for some condi cleanse). The condi version also works (just replace sword by scepter, GS by staff and add illusion in your traits), though it does not kill as fast but can be more durable.

If you want to go for team fights instead, then this is a bit of an uphill battle, as mesmer does not thrive as much in these environments. Chronomancer will make the job easier. But this is definitely possible and the idea is that you can support your allies with boonshare (signet of inspiration, together with the chaos line for a lot of boon production), as well as some nice utilities (AOE condi cleanse if using inspiration traitline or if using null field, time warp, etc…).

For PvE your first assumption of everything else would be better is bang on the money. Maybe alacrity bot for future PvE meta with chronometer might be a thing….maybe…..if it’s not Nerfed on Arrival (NoA) or because of whiney people.

WvW you can be a real game changer giving a veil or portaling past a choke for a Zerg but your tagging ability is kinda meh so don’t expect as much loot as a GWEN. Roaming power is ok at and the PU condi is very cheesy but very effective for solo, you wanna switch to power though if running with 2-4 people though.

PvP I don’t play as much so I’ll leave that to others.
