How is Mesmer's DPS?
If damage is all you care about then mesmer will never satisfy you.
For the most part you don’t pick a Mesmer for its damage. The exception to that rule would be encounters that are bombarding you with reflects.
Otherwise, Mesmers excel as being the Jack of All trades in the utility role: stealth, reflects, Alacrity**, Portals**, Quickness, Interrupts, Boon stripping, Condi clear, Healing, distortion/evasion, etc.
Your damage is split between personal damage and Illusions. So, if you in a situation where you can’t use your Illusions you’re losing practically half your damage.
For straight up solo sustained dps then Mesmer will not fare that well. If you look at more effective dps scenarios including the dps increase you can bring to allies then mesmers do great. Mesmer’s need to tailor their builds more finely to different encounters as well you can’t just apply one standard rotation to everything.

So, Is it worth to level a mesmer? I mean, I fear not being wanted because my damage or being totally useless in encounters. And I also fear not being able to solo HoT history due to the lack of damage.
If those things aren’t a problem for a mesmer, I’m probably creating one soon.
Mesmer does just fine in the HoT zones. In fact, mesmer is probably the best class for soloing champs.
Chronomancer is a must-have in raids (just not for personal dps).
Chronomancer made me level the one class i swore i would never play :P It has nothing to do with daredevil being a piece of junk.
Good question this actually. I’m running a Mesmer and a total newb with GW/GW2. Just liked the look of it so went for it.
Got to be honest, I’m struggling a little with him in HoT – especially at night
I’m through to the 7th chapter of the story line, so it’s not all bad, but a couple of them have been 3-4 attempts in certain fights.
I especially have problems with 4-5 pocket raptors. My health Vanishes in 2 bites and it hurts. 50/50 chance of survival – so I must be doing something wrong, as others turn up and just clear them in 2 hits…shrugs
The key to being wanted as a mesmer is to make yourself useful. Your damage isn’t great and very reliant on phantasms, as others have said, so you need to make your utility worth more than that of other classes.
At the moment that comes from quickness through the continuum split with timewarp and wells as well as the engy rotation destroying alacrity. CC is also very useful in raid content for controlling seekers and breaking bars but other classes can also do it just as well.
Your personal DPS is decent, not superior, but far from inferior. If you bring your A-game, you definitely pull your own weight. Fortunately, that’s not where it ends. Your wells and skills significantly increase the DPS of your allies.
Mesmers truly are a jack of all trades. With shield you can block/evade/blur your way to victory as a tank(!), you have boon removal with sword, you have condition damage if you need that, you have the most awesome set of utility skills and builds which allows you to adapt to the fight more than any other profession I have played. If you know the fight, and know what your team is struggling with, a mesmer often has the solution.
Base mesmer damage is meh… However due to the changes they made to minions (including our clones & phantasms) our phantasms survive a lot better, indirectly increasing our dps.
Other than that, the chronomancer spec also increases mesmers damage as we can now shatter without losing our phantasms. Wells help as well.
So right now mesmer damage is better than it used to be, its still not top damage but its not bad at all.
But don’t worry, every team wants a chronomancer. We aren’t taken for our damage but for how we can enhance the group’s damage and in some cases also stealth, reflects, portal.
Tons of Alacrity & Quickness (dat double Time Warp, well spam) really helps party damage a LOT.
Oh right. I forgot to mention: boon stripping is also something we can do. Very useful in the raid.

Mesmer DPS all comes down to how well you can sustain your phantasms. If you’re fighting against an enemy that doesn’t kill your phantasms that often, then the DPS from x3 phantasmal swordsman along with yourself is actually quite good.
If you can’t maintain phantasms, then your DPS is quite poor.
