Not sure if I want to reroll as a warrior or mesmer. Im tired of having to cast 20 spells to kill a single NPC and getting downed in 2-3 hits. (Elementalist)

Do the Clones actually provide good protection or do the mobs just ignore them and kill you? Also how does the mesmer deal with more then 1-2 ranged NPCs?

Go warrior, heh. Mesmers can work in pve but it is generally slower than warriors and requires more work. Since that is the opposite of what you want…

Our survivability can be pretty good, although there is always that one mob that ignores every illusion you throw at it resulting in a non-so-hilarious benny hill impression (you running around frantically hoping the mob stops following you, hoping it dies before you do!). Otherwise, its pretty decent.

Because our survivability depends on illusions and they are killable multiple mobs are a problem. It is difficult to spawns illusions faster than they can be killed and our aoe is poor. We do however have a few ways of dealing specifically with ranged mobs, ranging from the warden (deflects, or reflects if traited, projectiles) to the feedback utility skill (reflects projectiles).

Mesmers kill things slower. You will see a warrior kill something while you still have 40% left to eat through. Mesmers are a finesse class that requires a lot of skill and practice to be effective. You should be constantly swapping and timing your skills. Its a very “busy” class and the shatters are difficult to use but you should be using them. If you did not like the ele you probably wont like the Mesmer.
From what you said i would roll a warrior.
PS. how are you taking more than 4 spells (let alone 20) to kill something as an ele? They are one of the highest dps classes.

Don’t roll Mesmer for PvE, but do try it in PvP where it’s actually fun.

If you just want to walk around like : “Oh a mob, oh, dead” then go for Warrior.

Mesmer in PvE can be fun and effective, but in order to do so they need much more work and thoughts pre- and in-fight. You can be walking bag of tricks, have some kind of skill or trait against nearly everything.
Ranges? Feedback or focus skills reflect projectiles.
Melees? Disturb them with illusions, cripple them and so on.
You can go range-condition with Staff or scepter, range-directdmg with greatsword or even melee with the sword.

I would say give the mesmer a try, and if you find it too difficult to learn at the beginning, move on to something else. Most people that absolutely love the mesmer and find it fair and balanced have played it since headstart or beta. Just know that mesmer has one of the steepest learning curves in the game.

And don’t feel bad if you can’t get the hang of it. I am much better with a mesmer than a thief, even though I love playing both classes. I tend to play with what I’m good at, so I stuck with the mesmer. Though, I have huge respect for those with enough patience to figure out the thief.

I find it fascinating when Elementalists say they’re “so fragile” in PvE.
I would argue that you should roll Mesmer. You might want to go back to your tank the Elementalist after 10-20 levels ofc, but it’s good to gain perspective.

The strength of heart to face oneself has been made manifest. The persona Carighan has appeared.

Ignore most. Here’s the reality:

Do the Clones actually provide good protection or do the mobs just ignore them and kill you?

Clones are a gamble, either they can work or the mob can stick to you. Luckily, we have a huge number of effective defenses (if going for a slower build) or a large enough burst to nuke the target before it nukes us (if going for a burst build). I advise you to learn early how to use all four shatters, in particular the #4, which is a pocket invulnerability and can, coupled with blurred frenzy, save your behind in many an occasion. I also advise looking into Blink, as getting out of stun can help you avoid a large amount of damage.

Also how does the mesmer deal with more then 1-2 ranged NPCs?

Basically, Feedback and Warden’s Feedback+Phantasmal Haste with Focus. Those can sometimes cause the ranged NPCs to essentially kill themselves. Drop iWarden, stand under it and unless the mob targets it specifically, you’re essentially immune to ranged attacks.

Personally, I now prefer to run PvE with double swords + greatsword and just melt stuff left and right – unlike some coments above, it’s actually no slower than an equally geared warrior, it just requires one to be a wee bit more careful – not elementalist level careful, though, thanks in great part to our extensive defensive abilities.

I find it fascinating when Elementalists say they’re “so fragile” in PvE.

From personal experience, they are more fragile than Mesmers, if you mess things up or switch to a wrong element at wrong time, whereas Mesmer depends more on utilities and shatters to survive. However, I’d say they’re no weaker than elemental mages back in WoW – i.e., in right hands, an elementalist can be quite effective with little threat to himself.
