I love mesmer, but I hate being command by people around to portal this, portal that, blah blah…etc
I’ve always hated the swamp level in FOTM because some people just don’t even want to try running when mesmer is in the group. At least one will start commanding me to do this and that with portal. Among those commanders, at least one will not recognize When the portal is visible, and blame me for not laying down the portal for them while the portal is RIGHT THERE. Some will then call me stupid because I didn’t do it the way they want.

I always port the farthest person. I start by putting down the 1st portal at the destination then run to that person and port him while he grabs the thing. It works about 95% of the time.
This time I met a group where the commander wanted me to port all three people at one location. I kept trying, but it never worked. Either 1st portal past 60sec into cd or 2nd portal 10 sec duration ended. I was being asked why I did not put down portal while I keep explaining HOW PORTAL WORKS at the same time.

I’m not enjoying this.

I feel your pain brother but you seem to be under the impression that when given an order, you need to comply. Your abilities, your rules. Tell em to stuff it. Then lay out how YOU will be doing it. They still being a pain about it? F em, bail. The game is for your entertainment.

If my group doesn’t say or do anything I just port myself to the furthest and do that one.

If they say or do things, I port my way. I put down a waypoint. Wait for everyone to ready up. Then countdown and port. If it doesn’t work, so be it.

I actually never experienced such unfriendliness. I put down portal, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. Many times but, after people had tried to run the swamp without portal, I offer to portal then, but they seem not listen or to understand, that I can help them. It is very funny… well and I have a friend who is also mesmer. So we both combine our portals and run 2 of those thingies ourselfes, leaving the easy one for the other 3 to deal with…

Ive never had anything like this happen to me, no one ever asks me to use portal.
However i do use it to help my group / other people just for the sake of helping and being friendly.
Like the swmp fractal, it is ridiculous fast with a portal, so i don’t see any reason not to use it. I sometimes help people to get trough jumping puzzles with it as well. It is a great helping skill.

But as Samiell said, no one can force you to do their bidding, those are your skills and you should use them the way you want, if someone annoys you about you not using YOUR skills the way they want, just block them.

Never had this either. I get asked to portal in the JP or for a commander, but they ask. And as long as I don’t join the commander-zerg, no one expects me to go along with his plans anyhow.

Portal is a highly unique ability. I wish more were like it. We need combat abilities with more oomph (on all classes), so that combat feels more responsive.

I put a waypoint on the map (shift + right click) and say I will lay portal there. If they’re not there when 2 people are there, it’s their own kitten fault and they walk.

Simple:

• Wait until everyone types r, make sure you let the party know that you’re counting down.
• If they don’t want to listen, they don’t want a portal.
• Once everyone is ready, drop your first portal, and start running to the waypoint.
• When you get near it, start counting down.
• Wait at the designated area until the desired amount of people are there/near and drop the portal (ensure that they are able to close the distance if they are not already there).
• ???
• Profit.

The worst is tpvp pugs, I have had groups all time make me ping my utilities so they can decide what i should be using. Had a group tell me to take close point and run null,life,port, tw wow thanks for giving me tools to protect close point. When I play my ele and guard in tourneys no one ever tells me what to run, just on mesmer idk. It can really kitten you off though when you have 900 plus hours on one profession and some scrub thinks they can tell you how to play better than you.

Sounds like the problem here is you trying to please other people, even though you really don’t want to. Just learn to say “no”. It’s not like it’s hard to find a new party..

Best bet… Do not PUG fractals, and in few cases dungeons to. There are so kitten many people out there that think they know best, know how to play all classes in the best way and generally think they are the best thing ever to plop out of a uterus.

I roam, so I don’t give a flying F about what others have to say .

Agree with Drachshyish. Don’t PUG. Running content in a PVE-only guild is a very, very different experience.

I don’t mind. Sometimes people actually present suggestions I’d not thought of.

Well, in the swamp fractal you should know to be using portal and marking your portal with a waypoint on the minimap. (Alt + Click) Your response to someone telling you to do it should be “I’m already on it. Here’s how it’s gonna go….”

Take charge. Portal is the most efficient means to doing the swamp fractal. Why would you not use it?

(Also, if they don’t want to use portal you should probably just leave. Chances are they’re going to drive you to a rage quit later with other inefficient and silly tactics.)

You can either port the farthest 2 and let the close one run or try for a mid point port for all 3 but Im not to fond of that for the reasons OP brought up. People seem to fail more when they all have to run to a central point for a port instead of you bringing the port to them…lazy much. Or my favorite is run with a mesmer friend and use you port for u xD You guys take the hard ones and let some scub take the easy one and its like poof 2 dwn jus gotta wait for the close one to run in and then boss fight.

When ever my mesmer buddy and I run the swamp we are done on our first attempt and in just a few minutes.

However, I will say I was in a CoF group earlier today with 3 mesmers, thief and warrior… I’d NEVER seen the effigy go down so quickly thanks to multiple feedback bubbles and timewarp…

Because warriors are not the best dps class. Theves and ele are better but most people do not know how to play them effectively which leads to warriors being a safer bet. Most mesmer are pretty bad at playing

I agree, I hate Portal. I wish they’d never have invented the thing. Especially wish they’d take it out of WvW.

you know what would be nice? If portal just became an elite… Then we could have space on our skill bar for other crap… I mean how many people here always have portal equipped on their skill bar? Noone? Yah so after we use it we have to wait on the 90 second cooldown mean while everyone else is running off to the boss fight and we are sitting there waiting for our skills to change so we can add whatever utility we had instead of portal. Its frustrating to say the least.

If a mesmer is using portal he’s doing it more for the group than for himself, that’s for sure.

Hm, granted it’s nice when roaming in WvW for a quick retreat.

@loseridiot LOL most thieves in dungeon runs are bad and uber squishy but its not the classes fault its the player, same goes for ele…i cant count the number of times ive seen an ele who stays stuck in fire or earth atunement…like really? havent seen too many bad mesmers in dungeon runs though, not that they dont exist, i guess ive been lucky but i kinda think its because most bad mesmer players give up on the class about mid way through lvling it.

You are doing it right

And yeah, I hate portal too, but as a WvW player I hate it for other reasons. In WvW ppl expect you to hide/stay inside of enemy fortresses, and if you manage to stay alive/hidden you’ll have to wait up to an hour before the zerg comes back. Booooring! Another issue are golems. Once the commander on your map decides to build a bunch of golems, the fun stops for you as a mesmer. Port the golems here, port them there, wait with the golems in that tower, … boooooring!

Last but not least, I’m sure portal is the reason why mesmers are the only class without a reliable or passive speed buff. Because running fast and having portal would be too much …

Indeed, warriors are really easy to play and that’s why they are considered a good dps class. Any idiot can do good damage with a warrior just by pressing autoattack and 100blades.

That said, mesmers are not far behind when it comes to easy playmode in PvE. Use a GreatSword, stand back and randomly mash the buttons #2, #3 and #4.
