Is sword / (sword, focus) viable in wvw?

And i mean in ZvZ fights also?

I wanna run a tanky/dpsy dual sword / staff or sword focus / staff build in for pve and WvW but i don’t know if the swords melee is viable enough, i will be speccing into stuff that reduces damage ( %reduce per each clone trait seems like it could help a lot) and also stacking some vit / toughness.

I just have myself set on 1hand sword as i find mesmer the best class for using 1hand sword (guardians 1 hand sword is sub par IMO, and i dislike warrios) and i love the idea of a 1hand sword (or dual sword) wielding melee mage / spell sword.

the idea is use my clones, evasive skills to confuse the enemy and move in for damage, i would use all the traits that give added bonus’s for each clone u have up,

like speed,dmg,reduce dmg traits plus the trait to create clone on dodge, and similair things, the skills i will pick will be all about confusing the enemy and mitigating / evading the damage at me.

the staff will be my secendary set weapon, which i will use for its supportive spells for chaos armor to and others to help me better move in to melee dmg and / or do some extra dmg / support from afar before i move in and to buff myself with boons.

I don’t have the exact traits down yet, i will post a build later but i’ve been trying different varients in pvp and it seems to be working. but wvw is a different beast with bigger battles.

Edit: Also i hear mesmers suck at tagging will this be a problem compared to my main (a dps/tank/support A.H Crit shout guardian)

i’d like to be viable at getting a lot of wvw bags and farming with him in pve as i’m getting very board of my guardian who i have mastered by now (had him since beta).

in zvz skill lag festival. so from sceptr here about nothing. staff to
so i just take my sword and fallof comander spam #1 button
and OH wep is focus. its reflect projectle if traited and speed buff. from oh sword u got nothing. 1 block in 11 sek and phantasmal who die in 1 sec after sumon

wvw isnt laggy for me even in massive zergs…. and whast?

I don’t suffer lag either.

Lately I’ve been running sword, and yes you can just jump in the melee train, or just behind it, and swing on downed players. If you don’t have the toughness though, it’s probably not somewhere you want to be.

If you’re ranged and zerker or some craziness, scepter will hurt your target. But you can just tag with staff all the same.

On t1 server I sometimes get nasty lag in zvzvz. But I use sw\t when staff is on cd to tag a few more people with burning and frenzy

i play on t.c which is teir 1

i have an oc’d i53570k @ 4.0
a heavily oc’ed 7950 (to about 7970 benchmark scores)
and 8 gb 1600 ram

and sometimes i will get fps drops to 25-30 in the BIGGEST of zergs with everything maxxed including super sampling

T.c. isn’t tier 1… just saying.

I like Sword/Focus+Greatsword or Staff in Zerg-v-Zerg fights. If you get the Focus trait, your 4 turns into a low-cooldown projectile reflect and your 5 actually survives for slightly longer than no time at all. Then, you can use 3 to catch fleeing players after the zerg fight ends and your autoattack to help deal with pesky Stability-junkies. 2 gives good low-cooldown Invulnerability, too, which is really strong when massive damage is coming down. Like if you get Immobilized, you can pop 2 to buy time for your condition removal.

And yeah, TC is Tier 2. I should know — my server’s fighting yours right now!

No matter how good your computer, you will experience skill lag when 2 zergs collide. Fps lag is dependent on your computer, but skill lag is dependent on the server kittenting its pants.

To answer the op, yes, main hand sword is a great choice in wvw Zerg combat. The cleave allows you to hit multiple people, as well as aoe strip boons, blurred frenzy is an amazing defensive tool, and illusionary leap/swap is a great spammable stunbreaker and leap combo.
