Is it suppose to be this difficult?
this is just my opinion but between lvl 30 and lvl 40 just sucks when it comes to leveling a Mesmer. i’m not sure why this is probably something to do with our sustainability vs our lvl. once you get past those lvls life becomes much easier mainly due new traits.
I’m a mesmer using Great sword and off hand sword and focus I’m level 31 but i can easily still get dominated especially if its a horde of 3 or a veteran mob around the world i’m unsure if i should be getting dominated like this or if i just need to up my skills or if my gear is terrible. Although i am not sure what constitutes good gear in this game as i just buy what i can afford of the trade thing.
If you’re not using gear with good stats on it, it can be very difficult.
The stats that you should look for on your gear are power, precision, and crit damage, in that order. Attempt to get a full set of armor, weapons, trinkets, and possibly runes in your armor to boost those stats.
However, since you’re leveling, you’ll obviously be outgrowing your gear fairly quickly. I’d recommend sticking to either green or blue quality gear, and updating it every 10 levels or so. That keeps your stats reasonably current.
Your weapon choice is good, stick with that. Try to open fights with temporal curtain to group them up, then iWarden, leap/swap and blurred frenzy, and that should kill most normal mobs. If you get into trouble, swap to greatsword and kite around using your iZerkers.
What traits have you been using?
I have 10 in Dueling and 10 in Domination
For dueling the first trait i am using is Phantasmal fury for Domination i am using empowered illusions. Should i rely on shatters or do keeping Illusions up do more damage than shatters?
Mesmers are tough to level but it gets easier at 40. Go 20 in dueling and get clone on dodge when you can.
If you have veterans as enemies dont use the greatsword, better swap to staff since it has good conditions on lower levels and survivability with skill 2. GS is just good for so called trash mobs. Many normal easy mobs.
Are you playing EU or NA?

Keep in mind master traits will be locked until 60 come Apr 15 patch, lol. Yay mesmer leveling.
You might do well until you get Deceptive Evasion from Dueling line, to get Crippling Dissipation from Domination and Deliberating Dissipation from the Chaos line.
This way your illusions will cause cripple and a random condition on death or replacement.
You should be able to keep them at a fair distance and continue to apply pressure, no matter what happens to your clones. If you still have trouble surviving, try the Staff, it has a lot of defensive capabilities.

Just to add to what he said,
Use signet of ether to help with illusion CD for multiple use,
You can line of sight them so they all come to you before using iWarden
You also need to use consumable, that will help with damage and exp boost.
You know I went sword/pistol and I never had a problem leveling. Mesmer really hasn’t gotten that many nerfs and I still use the same build I used at launch and I kill things just fine today. Heck from the blogs it sounds like they’re even buffing me.
You guys must be doing it wrong.

Those are good traits, stick with them.
You should be focusing on phantasms for your damage. Conditions are underwhelming no matter what, and shatters aren’t particularly good in PvE, and are absolutely horrible until you get multiple high level traits.
For more traits, I’d recommend going into inspiration. Once you get to master level in inspiration, you can trait the focus. That allows it to become a defense against projectile mobs as both the curtain and warden will reflect projectiles. Once you can take master dueling traits, go ahead and take sword cooldowns, giving you a faster recharge on blurred frenzy. Some would recommend you take deceptive evasion (clone on dodge), but that trait will actually hurt you if you’re playing with phantasms correctly.
Another person mentioned using the signet heal for higher uptime on phantasms. If you can get that skill, go for it. However, it costs 25 skill points, and I know that skill points aren’t always particularly plentiful at low levels. It’s a great skill for PvE though, so definitely pick it up once you feel you can.

I’m playing NA
Also thanks for the information every one else i will make sure to try this while adventuring as getting beat up all the time sure isn’t fun but it is a challenge!

As a mesmer that’s very important, it toughens you up. So you can realize the master race that mesmers are.
It was terrible in the low-to-middle levels. Just terrible. I actually considered giving up a few times, because my only other job had been Guardian which had been smooth sailing all the way to 80, and I thought that if I was 40 levels into Mesmer and still getting owned regularly I wouldn’t ever bother logging into it once it did hit 80. I was wrong… Once I hit 60 and had access to Grandmaster traits (and more points to spend, too, obviously), and followed some guides regarding good trait synergies to use, it got instantly better. Keep going. It’s worth it.

I dislike Greatsword in open world because you can never keep max distance for higher autoattack damage.
I love staff however, because it’s got great defense with the teleport-retreat, chaos armor, and chaos storm. Can give that a shot.

The Leveling & Open World Compendium
There are few thing I learned to survive in the PVE over world while leveling up my Mesmer, and other characters, which might also relevance to you.
1. Managing phantasm’s up time:
I try to target the mob with highest health before launching the phantasm. I use Tab key to cycle through the mobs to do a quick check. Otherwise, if I launch a phantasm which the mobs would dead a moment later, my phantasm summon skill will be in cool down and lost a large chuck of DPS to continue the battle.
2. Managing mobs’ aggro:
Use Phantasm to aggro and distract the mob while I am keeping a distance from them. One of my set up is GS and Sword/Sword. Within the 1200 unit distance, I open flight with Sword #5 and run behind the the phantasm. Within the 600 unit distance, I fire up a clone using Sword #3 and dodge backward. Swap to GS and launch a clone using GS #2. Thus, all my illusions engage in melee distance while I am at range. If I use staff, there is not need to roll back. Just swap to staff and #2 Phase Retreat.
3. Managing my position
GS #1 can damage at most three mobs along the channeling light. I try to move my Mesmer around to align as many mobs as possible while I use the GS #1 auto attack. Because of this, sometime just keep the Mesmer running in circle could clear out a lot of trash mobs using GS.
In melee engagement, I try to walk behind the mob to mitigate the damage.
4. Managing the distance
I do not put a lot of toughness and health to my Mesmer. To me, avoiding melee damage is a key to survival. To do this, I use Sigil of Hydromancy to chili the closing in mobs and use rune to gain swiftness. I also keep Blink in my utility slot for the emergency.
5. Reset flight
I do not run PU build. But I find stealth is very powerful to reset flight, to drop the aggro, to reposition, and to retreat. I also use Mantras and stealth give me the cover up while channeling.
I am not a great player and not good in reflex. I learned a lot from reading this forum to improve the up time of my Mesmer.

I second this. If it wasn’t for Kai’s guide, I’d have given up before level 40 for sure. I can now also confirm the Lazy build works in dungeons, should that tickle anyone’s fancy.
I recommend at least 10 points in dueling and gear with at least some precision. This gives you lots of extra dodges, which will keep you alive much longer. Keep up as many illusions as you can, as this drastically reduces the amount of damage you take. Most PvE mobs will give up and go after your clones instead if you kite them for few seconds. Don’t shatter while all your clone/phantasm skills are on cooldown or you leave yourself open to attack. Bring at least one stealth skill (Decoy works with any build) for times when you get in over your head.
Put a sigil of Bloodlust on one of your weapon. It will help a lot.
Yes, bloodlust increases your dmg dramaticly. Just care and don’t go into downstate or die.

Go to WvW. Trait a bit of confusion, 20 Dom should do it. Zerg, zerg, zerg, spam null field/feedback and watch the XP roll in.
Simple as that.
toughness is your friend. leveling have 0 in common with end game. Don’t bother with guides or builds, just use gear with toughness so you don’t die all the time. Explore all zones, you get almost same amount of xp finish a 1-5 zone at level 40 as you finish a level 40 zone. There is no need ever to explore at your own level.
