Norn Guardian – Aurora Lustyr (Lv 80)
Mia A Shadows Glow – Human Thief (Lv 80)
In PvP I’ve been using portal. I try to keep track of when it’s about to expire and shortly before it goes on recharge I’ll create a portal exit, but the completed portal isn’t usable. Is this the way it’s supposed to behave?
I’m assuming it’s always done this, but it’s frustrating to have an active portal clearly there that you want to go through but it won’t let you no matter how furiously you press F. It seems to happen sometimes when I don’t use it to its full duration as well, I’l lbe in combat and unable to escape using this unusable two way portal.
Maybe because youre out of range? I think the range is 9000.
Maybe, idk, never heard of that before
To get a feeling for Portal range, place the entry near to something you can target, do that and run straight in a line. The moment you lose your target, place the exit portal.
Also, if you let portal run out, it goes on a shortened CD (30s untraited), so you don’t absolutely need to use it before the timer runs out.
That definitely sounds like you’ve gone out of range. Have they said if they’re going to add a range indicator yet?

To get a feel for the range, do this:
Drop your first portal. Run, out of combat and with swiftness, in a straight line for precisely 12 seconds. That is the absolute maximum range of portal.

Or the distance from the center of the minimap to the border.
Portal range:
PvE/WvW = <5,000
PvP = <6,000
Video to show how much that is exactly,

I probably should make a tutorial video showing how far that is on a mini map. It’s definitely MUCH further than the border of the mini map.

Depends on your zoom level right?

And doesn’t it also depend on terrain? Like if you’re portaling up/down the cliffs/walls? It would be nice to have visual cues to know if portals went out of range, like with the little red bar underneath our skills.
The max distance is calculated in 3D space so terrain height is accounted for. IE 5k forward, or 5k up, doesn’t matter as long as the net distance from point A to B is less than 5k.
The mini-map zoom level doesn’t affect the portal distance. I was referring to distance being further than mini-map borders when you have it fully zoomed in and resized to a square, and you are portaling on a flat terrain.

Same problem here. And I am nearly sure to not have exceeded range…
Would be nice to have an icon with the amount of time left to activate the exit + having the out of range symbol (red line under the skill) if range is exceeded.
