Is there a viable condition build for PvE?
Depends on how you define viable. You can run pretty much anything in PvE and do fine, just because PvE is so easy. Unfortunately, there are no mesmer condition builds that can provide the same support, utility, and damage as a normal phantasm power build. I’ve tried very hard to get a few to work, but they just end up subpar always.
Exactly. When I was in a hardcore raid guild in WoW The burning crusade and was working extremly hard for server firsts and top different dps charts on my rogue the mutilate setup was considered unviable due to the simple fact it did ~4,80% less dps than the combat setup. I also spent 2 weeks change my alliance to a fraction as to get the other fractions alligance gained me ~0,9-1,1% more dps.
IN this game the dps between players, spec etc dont matter. If you can do the instance noone care if its 10-20% less dps, what they care is if you geared and play good enought to not die.
In some ways I miss my raiding days, I liked max my efforts to try get a top ranking in dps on a certan boss on WOL, in other ways I dont miss it as it was extremly hard work just to get that perfect chart.

but will confusion be any good at all in dungeons? I feel like when I’m out in the open fighting random mobs I do kitten damage with my condition/confusion build. Compared to if I’d run a phantasm or shatter build that is.
I’m looking at buying gear since I’m recently 80 on my mesmer. Problem is I want to play confusion/condition build in WvW, but I don’t know if there is any viable build for PvE aka. dungeons/whatever with conditions. I don’t have enough assets to buy both power and condition as of now.
I’m going for the rabid gear if anyone wonders.
Rabid gear is great. Runes of Undead work great with Staff play too (they add even more Toughness, and also – with Superior – add a percentage of Toughness to Condi damage). Generally PvE in the game is easy enough that you can pretty much build whatever you fancy (e.g. according to RP theme) and it will usually work fine. It’s only really dungeons and pvp where you have to start thinking about your build seriously. But it’s fun to aim for something anyway, and to be efficient, even in PvE, and Rabid for condi Mesmer works great.
Confusion isn’t really something you can build around these days, it’s more a bit of icing on the cake if you are investing in the Illusions line.
If you’re aiming for dungeons, people might whine at you if you don’t have Berserker gear.
There are a few boss (alpha for example) or enemies (karka) that attack fast enough for confusion to be decent. Still probably less damage than power builds but respectable. Then, as you noticed in the open world, most enemies in PvE attack so slow that confusion damage is really sad.
You can still use sharper images + illusions to stack bleeds and confusion can be a bonus but you should never build only for confusion. It will be “viable” in the sense that it isn’t negative DPS but if you don’t like it in the open world, you won’t like it in dungeons.
So I’m going for the rabid gear, what’s the best place to buy it. I have around 180k karma and around 800 honor badges. Where do I buy amulets and accessories? from laurels?
PS. I’m kind of new to the whole 80 scene since I’ve only really played sPvP/tPvP until now :s

Confusion is completely useless in 99% of all PvE combat.
Against that karka you could have just dropped a traited warden on it and killed it.

Hi OP,
Others have given you advice how a confusion build is not optimal (but still viable) in PvE. In fact, a condition build is in general not optimal if your group has more than 2 people specced full condition since condition damage of 3 people will start interfering with one another because of the condition caps.
Now, if you truly want to go forward with a condition/confusion build, here’s my current Clone Spammer build for your interest: http://tinyurl.com/jwxxw5g
Try the new rune set (Superior Rune of Perplexity). They’re a bit pricey atm but they are really good, you can easily have 10 stacks of confusion on enemies most of the time with this build.
As for how to get rabid gear, refer to this wiki page: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Equipment_acquisition_by_stats
It has pretty much everything you need to know.
For ~420k karma, I got full exotic rabid trinkers from Dwayna temple and 4 exotic pieces of armor from Grenth and Lyssa temples. The other 2 armor pieces (chest and boots) and weapons, you can get from WvW merchants with badges and gold.
Hope this helps.

mmmh… rabid gear is nice, but rampager make you kinda hybrid between condition and power, with nice crit chance increased, i used to run carrion, rabid and rampager and at the end of the day, when i’m not using berserker gear and i want to go for some condition, rampager is really nice for me, i can have nice dps and nice condition damage (not the max cond dmg of course but still…). also since you have with rampager a nice crit chance, you might think at sigils for your weapons that activate on critical hits.
back in the day i tryed a confusion build for pve but i completely gave it up, there are some boss which really suffered from it, but most of the time i could see all my nice confusion stacks go to waste and it took ages to kill whatever. i use it now only in pvp with scepter+torch etc.

With cheap price of Koi Cakes its kinda decent right now if you’re running a confusion build but i still think power is much better because mobs take hours to attack and proc confusion
Just another question. Since I’ve never done any dungeons, is it important that I have full exotic when I start doing em or do people just not care that much? Is it enough If I have all rare instead?
You could do most dungeons in all greens.
