Just hit 80 and need help with armor...
Hello !
Here is the breakdown of the stat combos used by mesmer :
Power (Berserker and or Assassin): PvE (solo AND in groups), PvP, WvW
Condition damage (Rabid, Dire, Sinister) : PvE (solo, never in a group), PvP, WvW
Good luck
Thanks a lot.
I’m not sure if I’m going to be power or condition.
I’m don’t know if there is a good answer for this question, but if you were in my shoes (very few traits, not a lot of money, no clue what build you were ultimately going to go with), what set do you think you would go with first?
Thanks again!
That totally would be Power gear, it works for everything. Even as of today I use berserker and assasssin for everything.
I use Knight + Berserker, it’s a good combo if you’re willing to try, you don’t have as much damage output as a full Berserker but you’ll certainly have more suvivability due to amount of toughness added by Knight (this is for WvW, it can be used in PvE but not as optimal as full Berserker). Since you’re going for Exotics it’s easy to try out gear combos, like Berserker + Assassin, Berserker + Knight or Rabid + Dire.
If you want to play PvP I recommend berserker as the best gear set due to it’s high damage. In fact I go full zerk everywhere, even WvW. Going full zerk means you do way more damage, but I wouldn’t recommend you go full zerk in WvW unless you get good at avoiding damage…

Thank again for the help everyone.
I have another, very basic, armor question. After looking at the wiki, it seems like as long as I get the right prefix, the rest is just for looks. In other words, exotics from the dungeon and exotics from crafting are the same. Is that true?
I’m trying to find the cheapest and quickest way to get good armor.
Thanks again everyone!

Yes. I recommend getting the stats you want and applying the skins for them later as that is the easiest route to take.

Indeed, the best thing you can do is buy your exotic using Badges of Honor (WvW tokens) plus a a bit of gold rather than buy every piece via Trading Post, you’ll find the NPCs for weapons and armors in your server’s borderland.
Or go to dungeon vendors. >> I like being as cheap as possible. Or if you have the materials saved up already and the craft leveled, you could make your own. It saves you spending coin if you have the materials on hand (money that’s already earned and not lost). However, if you have neither the materials or the craft leveled, one of the above alternative options will be your best bet.
All this advice has been so helpful!
I went to the WvW merchant, and I had over 2,000 tokens, which was a pretty big surprise. So, I think that’s the route I’m going to go.
And if I don’t like how it looks, I can just use transmutation points, right?
Thanks again for all the help!

I would heavily recommend against getting WvW gear. The problem is that WvW gear is not salvageable, which means that any upgrade (rune/sigil) that you put into WvW gear is stuck forever. You can’t take it out without the use of an upgrade extractor which is stupidly expensive.
This happened when anet reworked the transmutation stone bit and has yet to fix it. It sucks, but until it’s fixed, stay away from WvW gear.
Really? Are runes that expensive? If I don’t use WvW gear, what would you advise?
Depending on the runes you want to get. If you were looking at Travelers, each of them run between 8-10g (depending on the market). Perplexity runs about the same, unless the prices have gone up again. Strength runes run 10-13g. Melandru runes at ~8g. Then again, you may luck out and only want a rune that costs pennies.
However, there are some runes ONLY available through dungeons, in which case they will cost you time and days of farming. They will not appear in the Trading Post at all and cannot be made through crafting.

Some runes are incredibly expensive. Strength, melandru, traveler, hoelbrak…. lots are extremely pricey.
I’d recommend getting dungeon gear or just buying it/crafting it.
