As true as Odin’s spear flies,
There is nowhere to hide.
and by build i mean weapons.
build 1: greatsword sword/xxx
build 2: staff scepter/focus(a build that for some reason everyone is in love with)
cookie cutter: staff sword/pistol
i’m asking why scepter is so loved now, but 2 months after release it was disdained. i had a ten page argument in this forum to prove how good scepter was, only for time to prove me right.
so why the change in opinion, fellow mesmers?
Since when has the scepter been anything more than marginally tolerated in a few very specific builds?
No one gives a rat’s kitten about scepter. The staff scepter/focus build you refer to is the glamour build. We grudgingly use scepter in that build because it almost sort of pretends to fit, not because it’s actually good.
as said above scepter/focus is only used in glamour builds really as it has 1 small confsuon burst on it, and becasue glam mesmers do not do well getting close (no condition removal really and no stun breaks if going full glamour) so we avoid weapons like sword.
Scepter has never been good except for the “okayish” reason i stated. the 1 skill is slow as hell and does negible damage the number two block is good but sword still gives much better utility here with a evasion plus damage wraped into the 2 skill, plus a gap close (a buggy one at that though) and a powerfully 1 attack.
Reason staff is used in almost all pvp based builds is that it is a heavy defensive weapon that can still produced huge damage via clones for shatter making it in my mind our most balanced and best weapon at this stage (bar the useless vunrablilty on staff 1)

i see almost every mesmer in wvw using a scepter with whatever offhand.

Then you’re probably not looking very hard.

i don’t need to look very hard. a lot of people still use swords instead of that failstick. point in fact: theres more people that use that failstick
A lot of people ran glamour cause it was so good and so ridiculously low skill level to use effectively. That will change with this update.

Maybe because confusion hits like a truck in wvw? Which ends on the 30th.
2 on scepter can also be used for a blind+confusion (when traited). The stupid thing is still stupid and is just used because it’s our only 1h mhranged weapon though… the long wind up/channel time/bright pink beam on 3 makes it very easy to avoid. 1 doesn’t do the next part of the chain until the last one hits… so this ranged weapon works like an inverted greatsword (does the most damage at point blank… because frick logic).
The OH focus is used to pull people through the edges of the glam fields for more confusion as well as reflect projectiles (when traited)
If you go outside of a zerg vs zerg setting you won’t see scepter much at all. Most common that I see would be gs or staff (less common than gs) + sword/sword or pistol (about equally as common).
A confusion mesmer doesn’t hit like a truck when you compare it to other classes condition specs. Other conditions you simply need to land. Confusion you need to land AND then have your opponent act in specific ways (totally out of our control).
If they choose to cleanse or just turn and retreat until it’s over… a condition mesmer can’t do a lot of damage to their opponent. If it is a 50% confusion damage nerf I would prefer everything to simply stack bleeds or a burn instead of confusion.
Nerfing confusion damage without buffing the other conditions would simply remove a lot of the pressure on the opponent when confusion is spiked. Also unlike in tPvP (where no condition mesmer is ever seen) stats aren’t capped… HP/Damage go much higher and more people are around to cleanse conditions… so it’ll be even worse in WvW. That is unless you just want to do just enough damage to get some bags without being very useful… it might still be good for that. : /

I’ve never gotten any good use out of the scepter.
I made a sword+focus/scepter+torch build in sPvP a little while ago that performed okay, but I ended up scrapping scepter for staff again.
But yeah, I don’t know if I ever actually hit one person for the full duration of Confusing Images; who is not going to dodge roll at least once with a big purple beam latched to their character?
I used to use Greatsword religiously but it’s got a lot of problems lately.
And I stopped using GS in WvW because I always feel like the auto-attack stands out too much; everyone knows exactly where they’re being attacked from and I always seemed to get focused on really quickly in zerg battles.
I’m convinced that was why, people ignore me in zerg fights since I switched to Staff.

i’ve never had that much of a problem with it tbh. any kind of elixir or cleansing flame ends that annoyance.
