Hello, everyone!

One of my main goals in Guild Wars 2 is to get every class up to level 80. I’ve done Warrior, my main and favorite, Elementalist, Engineer, Thief and Guardian (in that order). Now is the time for a Mesmer.

What is, in your opinion, the most fun way to do it? I’ve having troubles coming to terms with the “wand auto-attack and let the clones take care of the rest” approach. Would you recommend another way?

Thank you for you answers in advance!

use gs

i am serious, gs and sword is ur best bet for lvling, and it might disappoint u, but lvling a mesmer in normal ways is the most boring and difficult

especially with the new trait system

so try getting a gs, a sword, and the blink utility

Clones dont do much damage so unless you want to take 10 minutes to kill a single trash mob… You wont let the clones do the job.

GS/sword/whatever and burst/shatter. The primary thing to keep in mind is that the Mesmer is dependant on weapon swapping. You cant just kill something lazily like a Warrior smacking someone in the head with an axe while popping a couple of skills. A Mesmer use 10 skills in the same time.

I have one of those insta-lvl-20 scrolls so it’s not a major issue to get to, and I can afford pretty much every starting gear. Might be important as well.

So, the GS is fun, you say?

Option 1: Buy GS + Sword/Focus and go to eotm with an exp booster. Don’t open the bags until you’re 80 or just open them on your warrior
Option 2: Buy Staff + Sword/Focus and just level it slowly in PvE like you usually would.
Option 3:Level all jobs to 400 and then jump in eotm for 3h. This is costy though. Or you can just use the level 20 scroll and level a few jobs to 400.

Definitely try out all the weapon as you level. It’s good to get a sense of their rhythm. And revisit Focus after level 60 so you can get the hang of Warden’s Feedback builds.

If you’re mainly a PvE player, you will absolutely want to learn Sword (MH and OH) and Focus. These are your bread-and-butter “meta build” tools. Cleaving with Sword autos is one of the best ways to fight multiple mobs. (For PvP, you basically want all the weapons. Staff, Greatsword, Sword, Focus, Torch, Pistol, and even sometimes Scepter.)

For EotM leveling, Staff and Greatsword are both pretty good for getting champion credit. You just have to put up the Warlock ASAP with staff. Focus will help you keep up with the group; you can also use it in the occasional ZvZ fight to pull some enemies around.

Clones don’t really do damage. They can spread conditions, though (staff clones or clones with the bleeding trait). That and you can shatter them, of course. Typical PvE DPS comes from phantasms and reflection. Reasonable DPS phantasms are Swordsman (offhand sword), Berzerker (greatsword), Duelist (offhand pistol), Warden (offhand focus), and Warlock (staff); the Torch and Scepter phants kinda suck.

Nice advice. There is no scepter phant though.

Level zerging in EoM. Use GS and SW/F to push pull people over the edges. Your main usefulness to the zerg comes from utility skills that you can use reasonable well even without traiting.

I can recommend Staff and Sword/Sword for leveling. If you prefer GS, swap S/S for it, but I’d always keep the Staff, because although its main damage is condition damage, it offers great mobility and survivability, especially when facing champions during leveling. I’m not talking about downscaled 80ies but with blue and green gear – as long as you carry a staff with you, you won’t fear most of the champs/elites in the open world. Only those who have fast regeneration like the jungle troll in the swamp or constantly resummon veterans like the krait priestess probably aren’t soloable.

Killing trash most likely will take more time compaired to other professions, eg. I currently level a Guardian and kill speed is much faster compaired to Mesmer – but soloing champs is a pita, because scepter and staff on a Guardian do even less damage than on Mesmer and are more difficult to constantly hit with while kiting. Even meleeing and dodging them is easier with a Mesmer than with the Guardian, at least this is my impression. So all professions have their pros and cons in Open PvE.

When I leveled my second mesmer I used GS / Sword+Focus or Staff / Sword + Focus and max power and ferocity. Great AOE dmg and speed buff from focus is nice when moving between events, it is also awsome for grouping mobs together for AOE.

Best tip though is to keep you gear updated, get the best there is.

Take Focus (swiftness), and that’s it. We’re one of the slowest classes and this is one of the only ways you can get speed as Mesmer, and, for me at least, speed is the best thing at PvE.
