Looking for hard truth about Mesmer and WvW.
Mesmer is great fun in wvw, check out the build/guide list to see the variety of builds and play styles available to Mesmer. I never get bored switching around my build/gear. Most of them are wvw builds. I’m not sure what’s going on with the greatsword, there’s been a lot of posts on here lately saying its bugged since last patch, I don’t use one so I have no idea really. Assuming whatever is going on right now is resolved then yes it’s a viable weapon. What stat gear all depends on build and role you want to play.
The greatsword phantasmal berserker is bugged out and missing a lot of its attack and dealing significantly less damage…. So if you want a power based build run scepter/sword and sword/x. As far as off hands are concerned you can have your fill most of them are pretty good but torch is very situational. Mesmers are very good in wvw but watch out our condition removal is worse than that of a warriors.
Hi. In almost all MMO/RPG games, I played the Warrior archtype.
I played gw1 as a warrior, blah blah blah, came to gw2 on launch, and have played warrior since launch.
I’ve become more or less beyond frustrated with the warrior class (and lack of dev response at any point regarding their issues, such as sustain) in WvWvW, so I’m looking to roll an alt.
I managed to get a necromancer up to level 40 before loling deciding that leveling it further would be a waste of time.
Now, in general, mesmers (as a warrior) are extremely annoying. I can usually just cleave down clones..but they’re still annoying. So really, all I know is that you have clones. and stealth.
I’m looking for some hard info about how mesmers perform in wvwvw:
1.Overall,do you think your class is a strong suit in WvWvW?
2.Do you feel your traits are synergized nicely? (IE “Wiggle room”)
3.Is Greatsword a viable weapon for WvWvW? If so, what type of armor affix? (berserker, knight, ect?)Thanks.
1. In 1v1, some would argue thief is much better (especially perma-stealth thieves). In some ways they are. If dueling is your thing, I’d look into a thief as well. As for sheer utility and also strong 1v1 abilities, mesmer is the next best thing. It’s one of the best (if not the best) for group synergy.
2. The traits are fantastic. I’ll leave it at that.
3. I use GS and Sword/Focus. Works wonders for me in full zerkers gear. I can take down targets very quickly in 1v1 and group scenarios. Staff is good for more defensive things, but I’ve seen it used offensively with great success. The choice is your really. If you want to go full zerkers, I’d recommend GS (especially once it’s fixed) and Sword/X (X in my case is typically focus to annoy thieves who shadow refuge and pull people off walls/cliffs/etc).
Good luck.

The Mesmer is an excellent profession in WvW, good for both roaming and group play. In general though one Mesmer build can’t do everything and you’ll need to specialise towards one direction or another, i.e. a good roamer is not necessarily a good sieger, and a great group supporter won’t necessarily do well in a duel.
Some Mesmer traits have great synergy. The others are almost completely useless. Hence almost all Mesmers use only the traits that have great synergy, which to some extent limits Mesmer build options (interrupt traits for example are quite weak).
The Greatsword is definitely a viable weapon and is the Mesmer’s long-ranged direct damage option. The stats you want then are those that focus on direct damage.
Your questions are being answered by others, so here’s a little extra flavor.
Utility spells are awesome, especially in groups. Everyone knows about portaling at this point. Feedback is a great skill that casts a reflective dome around your target. So, if you’re at a chokepoint, pop a Feedback bubble and projectiles can’t get in for 6 seconds or so. We also have two very strong elite skills (Timewarp and Mass Invis.) Blink is a utility that has also changed my gameplay a lot (when I play an alt, I always forget I can’t just instantly teleport 900 – 1200 units away.)
Each weapon shines in specific circumstances, but they stand alone so well I wish I could use them all, all of the time. (I change them in and out a ton.)
Traits for me are a bit of a hangup. We are a trait-dependent class (which is why so many people complain about leveling a Mesmer). I also have a hard time not grabbing Illusionary Persona and Deceptive Evasion (2 diff trees, 50 points total). Other people have had success with different builds, so it could just be my playstyle.
Overall, I can burst down one person pretty fast in WvW if I play my cards right. And we have enough “Get out of Jail Free” cards up our sleeve so that playing with the front-line zerg works even in light armor.

I think that the mesmer is an excellent class in WvW. It excels, at least in my opinion, because it capitalized on confusing the enemy through the chaos of large battles or by just using stealth and clones to trick the foe into attacking the wrong target. There are numerous builds that work well in WvW. I’d recommend checking out videos by Osicat, FLIMP, and Pyroatheist as they show very different playstyles, all of which are effective.
In terms of traits, Dueling X and Illusions XI are popular because they are very useful (clones on dodge and shatter effects on the mesmer). Most builds have at least one of these traits, and a number have both. However, I have seen great builds which don’t use either of them. I guess what I’m trying to get at is that you can be as “cookie-cutter” or as creative as you want with your build, and you should be more or less successful if you’re skilled.
The greatsword is very popular for mesmers in all types of gameplay. It is usually run as part of a standard shatter build with berserker’s gear, but it also can do well in a phantasm build. Also, I’ve heard of it being used in a crit-based bleed build, but I’m somewhat skeptical of this usage of it because I think the staff applies comparable conditions with much more defense.
