I see, thank you.
Fay’s “Athena” guide can be easily adapted to allow for Focus use.

A traited Focus is a beautiful thing, especially if you have a hot focus skin too. (I love Ambrosia, personally – but the choir bell is cute too.)

In what way would you suggest I adapt it? And am I a bad person for really, REALLY liking The Minstrel? X’D

Just use a focus instead of an off-hand sword, and be sure to pick up Warden’s Feedback (Inspiration VIII). The play style is a little different since you’d lose the Phantasmal Swordsman, but the potential for reflection and crowd control from the Focus offer some really great defensive options.
There’s nothing wrong with liking the Minstrel! It’s just a lot harder than making or buying Ambrosia. :P
Updattte; Decided i’d like to go with a shatter build, suggestions on that front, remember, main weapons being Sword/Focus! <3

Focus is a poor choice for a shatter build. The warden is on a comparatively long cool down, and is best used by dropping it and letting it persist on the field for as long as possible to provide the greatest utility.

Fair enough, what would you suggest then? If not Focus, what else?

Sword. You get to have 5 skills from one cool down trait. The sword phantasm has the fastest and most reliable attack, and so can be shattered quickly, and the sword block can either daze, or produce another clone if triggered.

Ok, and what would you suggest if I were to keep Sword and Focus, or the other combinations?

A phantasm focused build. Wardens do a lot of aoe damage, and their beauty is in the massive projectile reflecting bubble they provide. The longer they live and the more wardens you can produce, the more effective they will be.

I used to run sword focus for several months and it was fantastic. But to get the full effect you should be traiting 20 points in inspiration to reduce cd and have them reflect projectiles. standard trait lines are 0/20/0/20/30. I ran that very very effectively for a long time with zerker armor and a mix of knight’s and soldier’s trinkets to make up for toughness that i lost until i switched to condition recently, and now im back to shatter and I run sword/sword.
also, a great combination with sword/focus is temp curtain, iwarden, ileap, and swap for immobilize. and that warden will easily deal a lot of dmg quickly. You can also pull people into iwarden using temp curtain, or stand right on top of it and you’ll be practically invul (minus ground targeted attacks) or drop a chaos storm for confounding bolts – there are a lot of uses and you can usually toss iwarden on top of a tower while sieging it to destroy cannons and oil pots very quickly (and because of the reflection someone would actually have to melee it and get hit in exchange or stop aoe attacks on the group outside and redirect it to it – either way it’s a great tool). I wouldn’t put off sword/focus until you’ve spent some time with it. It’s a lot of fun and can be pretty powerful. I know Osicat’s new Mist 2.0 build uses focus and he still shatters fairly frequently with it.

I got confused. Sorry i’m not the best reader, and checking the build site you linked it’s just got Staff and Greatsword. Would I be up close and personal with Blurred Frenzy? I quite like that aspect to be honest. I’m being a bit awkward. DX

My build is based off of staff and greatsword for general use, but requires having 2 swords, a focus, a greatsword, a staff, and a pistol for swapping between depending on the situation. Some fights are not suitable for getting into close range, so no sword. Some fights are not suitable for long range, so no greatsword or staff. Some fights aren’t suitable for projectiles, etc etc. In order to be a fully versatile mesmer, you need a fully versatile set of weapons.

My WvW build is a shatter spec with the primary weapons being Sword/Focus. You can check out my guide here: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/mesmer/Guide-Reflection-Mesmer-WvW/first
In a PvE environment, you’ll want to use Berserker gear instead since the survival isn’t as much of an issue.
Even I I agree on pyro that warden as a shatter tool have its limits I still think as a romaing weapon focus shatter can be wery effective. I regulary swap beween weapons when roaming but feel Shatter Cat Mist 2.0 with s/f work wery well. It also make stomping, healing ressing etc easier as you can start a lightningfield on the downed enemy, summon a iwarden and start a stomp, is somthing try to interupt you jan pull without stop stomp, if something try range stop you warden prevent that + you wont get conditions due to clensing bolts.

I use this as my phantasm build – (sort of, it’s changing)
I can’t emphasize enough how awesome the Focus is when traited. I definitely agree that it’s not great as a Shatter weapon though.
I am working on a vulnerability shatter build. this is the seed of where I am at. (in a new build editor)
I’ve been fiddling about, would this build be good at all? Spent the night on it.
