I always thought the mesmer was fun, even in GW1. But now, the mesmer is a whole new kind of awesome.
I remember back in GW1 grouping was near impossible as a mesmer (at least it was for me, and i considered myself at least competent!) but now the mesmer has grown into something else.
Granted I do not see many level 80 mes’s around but whenever i do a dungeon I usually have one or two mesmers with the group and they can hold their own. In a story dungeon one of our mesmers actually was 1vs1ing a champion and doing fine.
What are some differences from then and now you see and want to share?
I think the biggest gain from GW1 to GW2 is the end of the classic heal-tank-nuke.
The GW1 mesmer was very good even in PVE but since most parties were looking for monks nobody really cared about him.
The change I appreciate the most is that now Mesmer effects are impossible to miss. Purple explosions and rays and illusions everywhere :-) Now everyone knows we’re the real magicians in the game ^^
But I would really love having back “Empathy” and “Backfire” instead of confusion …
I was a Mesmer in GW1,
As far as grouping in PvE went, I never really needed to do so with how effectively one could steamroll the entire content of the game with just a Panic mesmer and Heroes

Yea, on GW it actually took effort to play a mesmer properly. Good thing GW2 got rid of that annoying prerequisite and successfully dumbed it down to a sole build that is shatter!
