Well I just started playing GW2 this weekend, and I absolutely love my Asura Mesmer. The only thing is, I feel my build is a bit weak. I am level 40 and have only invested 5 trait points, and am unsure if I am even heading in the right direction.

This is what I currently have now: http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fgQQNAW8clwzCoXUTpG2dIwZBA

I want to go in the direction of dealing lots of damage, because right now I am the one that is usually downed if facing three or four enemies at once. I die frequently, and find this quite frustrating. I’m not sure if this is because of my traits, skills, or my weapons. I usually switch in battle from my staff to my duel wielded swords.

I was thinking for traits maybe this? http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fgQQNAW8clwzCoXUTpG2NJxpHRn6KHlCs7dSFUdpC8G

Any help would be most appreciated.

Well there are different playstyles. While my guide is mainly aimed for lvl 80 players, I posted some trait advancement from 40 to 80 in one of my last posts.

Guide is in signature, it focuses mostly on greatsword. You can do nothing wrong if you place the trait points as described and use mainly power/precision gear as you level up.

Have fun with your Mesmer, it’s a great class.

Level 40 is around where most Mesmers feel to be a turning point, where we go from slow and clumsy to exceptionally powerful.

Most of us attribute this to the 20 points Dueling Trait – Deceptive Evasion. Taking this trait allows you to spawn clones when you’re doing a dodge roll while in combat.

My advice to you is to invest 20 points into Dueling, for Deceptive Evasion, and 5 points into Illusions, for Illusionists Celerity. I’d also advice you to get a staff, as it’s a very defensive weapon, and it – especially with deceptive evasion – will allow you to take on several foes at once, depending on your reactionary skills and playstyle.

If you decide to go with the staff as your main weapon, look into the Chaos, Illusions or Inspiration trees for various ways of enhancing yourself – but I’d definately pick up Deceptive Evasion and Illusionists’ Celerity for leveling.

All warfare is based on deception.

Yeah, Dueling 20 for Deceptive Evasion and Illusions 5 Illusionists’ Celerity are pretty much a must for leveling 40+ (unless you really hate to shatter).

Referring to the guides placed before me, I came up with this build: http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fgQQJARWlwzKqXVTgG2NJhZBnPEdUKwu3J9Q1pu1A

I have decided to make the greatsword my main weapon, as it has more damage compared to the staff. My second weapon are my duel swords, though, I don’t seem to be using them as much as I was when I wielded my staff.

I felt like adding more points to Dueling would be useless to my play style, and instead I think I will max out the Domination line.

I feel this is better then the build I came up with before. Should I edit this more? Change anything?
