Q:

I’m looking for a good hour long Youtube guide or multi part guide that explains from the ground up how to play Mesmer in WvW or sPvP or even video that explains WvW and sPvP in general. Not looking for a “If you don’t build this and do exactly what I tell you then will loose”, but a guide that will explain everything from the basics to advanced so I can enjoy WvW and sPvP combat and begin to understand on such a level that i am able to think of PvP builds and play styles for myself. By no means am I looking to be a pro but I do want to have fun even if I loose a fight.

If any of you are familiar with Day9 from Starcraft 2 then someone like him but for Guild Wars 2 would be perfect.

Thanks in advance.

Gromit.

I’m not entirely sure that anything quite like this exists. As far as Mesmer gameplay goes, the podcasts that Kylia and myself do (linked in my sig) offer a good perspective on things. You’ll also be able to cobble something of what you want together from multiple videos. My personal videos often contain basic gameplay tips, and Osicat’s videos also often contain lots of great playing information.

For spvp, I believe supcutie has a some good Mesmer playing videos, though again not quite what you are looking for.

In the future, I’ll definitely look into making something like this, but in the meantime, my advice is to simply play the game, and then ask questions here on the forums as you need, and everyone will be glad to help out.

Thanks a lot I appreciate the response. As this my first MMO where I hit 80 and actually plucked up the courage to try PvP I found it extremely daunting. frustrating and very off putting because of the lack of any kind of league system that matched me with similarly skilled players, the learning curve is so steep I find myself running into a wall most of the time. Now I have found myself walking out of a few PvP instances with a look of complete and utter disgust because of the people who play it being considerably better/experienced than me.

I am hoping to find a guide that talks about basic combo’s, what to do in certain situations, how to recognise enemy spell charging, how to better approach an enemy and the mentality you need. Would also like to see some analysis/commentary of PvP as well.

i cant really find basic mesmer pvp guides :/ (keyword: basic)

that said, first you need a build. there are 3 very viable damage types to choose from:

  1. Shatter
  2. Phantasm
  3. Condition
  • Shatter requires the most mobility to be highly effective, but it will be nice for beginners too, as far as ive seen. Shatter relies alot on combos and keeping control of the fight, jumping in and out while delivering quick burst damage and evading everything. builds are 0/20/0/0/30
  • Phantasm lets you use phantasms as damage, while you mainly focus on doing other things, such as surviving/kiting. 10/10/0/25/0, although 10 dueling isnt needed, it has a very big impact on your main source of damage.
  • most, if not all condition builds use clone-on-death traits, located in 10/25/10 (25 is underwhelming though). In my oppinion condition is really fun and viable to play, but i don’t have enough experience to compare them to the others :P.

I’m actually going to recommend a condition build to you :o, but if you want to make your own build, feel free to skip the following paragraph:

The traits are 20/20/30, taking

  • crippling dissipation and cleansing conflageration,
  • reliatory shield, far-reaching manipulations and deceptive evasion (DE is required)
  • debiliating dissipation, chaotic dampening, prismatic understanding
For weapons you’ll want scepter/torch, staff
use a rabid amulet with undead runes or 4 lyssa/2 lich (the one with condition damage and duration)
decoy, blink, veil, mass invis as utilities

In this build you’ll have very long lasting stealth with Prismatic Understanding, high defense with the staff and high condition damage output with staff clones/clone deaths/illusionary counter.

I think its a very noob friendly build, with all teh stealths you’ll have a lot of room mistakes, but it still teaches you how to get the most out of your stealth and other cooldowns : D.

Here are some important rules to remember:

  • when stealthing, try to do a 90 degree turn or run behind our enemy, instead of going a straight line to where you were going.
  • you can do alot of things even in stealth! Dodge to create staff clones (they do conditions) or summon a phantasm. summoning a phantasm triggers your autoattacks though, so be carefull not to get revealed.
  • if you have a choice, use the prestige (torch 4) before decoy, before veil/mass invis. (lowest to highest cooldown)
  • you can jump up and down in veil to trigger the stealth a second time.
  • The staff is your best defensive weapon, try not to spam phase retreat for clones, but use it for when you feel like it will prevent damage. This feeling will develop as you play.
  • Make sure you always stand in your own Chaos Storm (staff #5), it’s a great defensive skill, offensive… not so much.
  • Make sure you use phase retreat through your Chaos Storm, it will trigger a leap finisher which gives you Chaos Armor. That armor gives random conditions to attackers and random boons to you, making it very difficult for them to damage you. Don’t try to be a tank though, stay mobile!
  • The scepter autoattack is somehwat worthless, avoid using it unless you have to. (weaponswap on CD etc)
  • Illusionary counter (scepter #2) is an offensive skill! It will do about 8k torment damage on moving targets if they dont cleanse it. landing it on teh right target can be hard, but it will get better with practice, trust me.
  • confusing images has a long cast time and leaves you vulnerable without having a lot fo impact. Use only if you’re not in danger/burst range.
  • the prestige has a burn at the end, and you can try to end it near foes to do some extra damage! Although teh main functionailty of this skill is defense (stealth), and you should focus on learning that first.
  • make sure you don’t Blink away from soemone in a straight line! Try to blink to their sides or back. You can also use Blink to get up some terrain , more blink locations can be found on the same channel!
  • don’t dodge with deceptive evasion for the sake of creating clones too often, only do it when you have full energy, or are sure youre not in danger/are in staff etc.
  • never stand still, WASD are your friends.
  • remember the functionality of your weapons when you weapon swap: scepter is for the high damage block and stealth, staff is for autoattack conditions and defense.

Hope this helps! If you’re interested I can also give a quick guide for Shatter, which is my personal favourite.
