Mesmer Role in pve
Im still stuck on that one myself, but for dungeons I tend to run in with Greatsword and staff – Feed back, Null field, and Time warp are your friends. due to the Chaos storm nerf deal you cant apply buffs and conditions as fast as before but the wind of chaos is still pretty nice for group support. As far as dps, its hard to judge with mesmer but feedback adds a ton when dealing with ranged. You just have to remember something this game isnt like other MMOs where you have a Tank, DPS, Healer – sure you can trait “tank” healer" dps" but I found that if you trait lets say purely “tank” you lose that extra dps and or you trait dps you lose that surviabilty. I cant tell you how many times ive seen warriors and or guardians just run in with all signets and expect to kill everything in one hit…. it just doesnt work and you find yourself reviving them so much to the point you vote to kick them.
I tried that greatsword setup only still your dps is subpar compared to other classes.
In gw2 you basicly have 5 dps classes in a dungeon, however they all have their own role.
A guardian is the one that does a bit of healing and tanking however the most classes are all dps.
So is the mesmer however its dps is way to low for pve compared to all classes.
The few bonusses it gives like timewarp and feedback are to situational and not worth taking a low dps.
It seems that gim ped is being changed into a other word

Have you ever done a group without a warrior/guardian? try it out – Dont think of it as a dps race. mesmers add alot to the group, Also im not sure what this “kittened” means… my gs beserker phanty hits for around 2-2.5k per swing and warlock hits around 7k per cast. Add that with mirror sword etc. Im not sure what the prob is. Is the mesmer dps lower than the warrior? maybe but who gives a crap? can the warrior create an entry portal and send the group to the other side of traps? can they mass invis the group to escape impending doom? nope. Also illusions can be used as aggro, sure they die in one hit but thats one less hit someone in the group is taking. I will agree our dps could use a boost and the changes they did brought the mesmer dps down but I try not to look at this game as a dps race. I look for the support I can put in groups.
Mesmers may have lower damage, however, that can be partly based upon current spec. What I mean is that on some fights, phantasms can be awesome. Some, they are worthless due to aoe’s and getting one shotted. In Guild Wars 1, Mesmer was all about timing and to some degree it is here too. That timing is notable for shatter builds, when to get the clones out and when to shatter (a.k.a. when are they going to survive getting to the target).
Also, I believe that mesmers are still semi similar to the GW1 version, wherein they weren’t necessarily the top dps or anywhere near, but they were one of the top sps (support per second). Since there’s no such thing as a sps meter, I cannot verify if they were the top, but then again I’m not sure how’d you quantify interrupts, portals, ranged reflects, misleading mobs, laying down conditions (both damaging and non-damaging), and boons. In a lot of ways, even though we don’t do top damage, we make stuff easier. I am certainly no pro, but there are a lot of good mesmers who have done dungeons on the forums and lots of posts that can give good pointers.

So basicly you are saying the role is very situational, where other true dps classes have a far better role in a group.
I have yet to come across a fight where a mesmer skill is really needed.
Some skills are situational but not the role, and I cant say that there are any true dps classes in this game. Do some classes do higher burst? yeah maybe but relying on one skill to end the many sounds like no fun to me. Play a warrior or whatever you think is that pure dps and I promise you will go back to the Mesmer. Ive tried out all the classes and I tend to always float back to the mesmer. The mechanics are a sweet thing when you learn to use the class right.
Depends on the fight but mesmer can make life substantially easier for groups.
Have to get 3 people over a moving laser field?
Plop down a portal and hop to the other side ( using blink) and plop down the other end of the portal and Poof ! no waiting 20 minutes for people to stink at jumping.
Fighting a boss that stacks tons of boons or conditions? Phantasmal disenchanter to the resque. 3 of those bad boys will pretty much keep every boon off a boss permanently and every condition off your party.
Annyoing ranged mobs? you have solutions for those ! ( focus anyone ?)
Annying melee mobs? more solutions! ( dual swords / scepter sword FTW )
And yes. Mesmer can spit out some pretty amazing dps too.
You don’t sound like you want to be convinced, so I am unsure why you posted. It smells like troll tbh.
Mesmer does not do enough damage? Pardon? As someone who played a warrior I am unsure if serious. Engineers may pump out more damage with grenades, but they do that against all classes, not simply more than mesmers.
Your number one utility are your clones. Keep churning them out, mobs do not chase your party members so that they can chase your clones. Now add a cripple on death trait and you’ve just become a cornerstone in those chaotic five silver mob pulls.
Start your pulls with a illusion, have the whole group waste their alpha strike on an expendable clone instead of a valued team member.
Got Null Field and Feedback (as you should). Is there no need for them? Are you chomping on a boss/champion? Thrown them on the mob anyway, projectiles going through will add confusion stacks and that’s more damage.
Granted, if you’re playing with a staff (our defensive weapon) and complain about DPS (do you even have the extra bounce traited in?) it does not even make sense to post about it. The way you put it I’m unsure if you even are equipped with your exotics and using your berserker gear, because saying the GS is subpar smells like using green Rampager (your staff’s gear) with a greatsword.

Staff is defensive? x_x All out Carrion gear with staff does serious damage. I think more people need to watch the guides on the following thread.
20/0/30/0/20 is a seriously epic spec. I have done plenty of dungeons and only ever gone into down state once. You do no damage when you’re dead and I always see my fellow dps group members laying on the floor crying for help. Stand at max range and keep 3 illusions up at all times and throw out Chaos storm/null field etc for your group members and keep rocking. GW2 hates melee players, why bother with the sword etc?
Oh, I don’t. I loathe melee. I played a warrior because it was fun, but a fun backed by high health and high armor. My mesmer is long range only and yes, Staff was my weapon of choice while I leveled and the GS was shunned, but at 80 I like the GS more.
Just like my warrior ended up being an auto-attack character (axe/horn) the Staff is pretty much auto attack as well. I liked the GS for the extra buttons to play and even so I have Rampager set in case I wish to go back to the Staff.
