This may be a strange question seeming as Guardian and Mesmer are very different but what one is better?

I know “better” can be a hard word to define in terms of different classes. So what i mean is what is more effective in Dungeons, what one is more successful in PvE and PvP/WvW, what one is wanted more in groups/parties. I know that both of them can last a long time in a PvP battle if played right but what one can dash out DPS better.

there should be a guardian and mesmer in pretty much every dungeon group apart from cof p1, missing a guardian is more noticable than missing a mesmer

for pvp/wvw really depends on what you want to do… huge difference between the classes…

There is no better, they play very differently and do very different things and can not properly be compared. They are equal and yet so very different.

i prefer having a guardian in the party more than a mesmer

A guardian is a must in a dungeon party. There’s no denying it. Not sure about a mesmer. I’ve been our guild’s only mesmer for a while and they didn’t seem to need one before me. They’re both pretty fun to play. And they can use a wide range of weapons. I have both and I’m not regretting it.

Mesmer > Guardian in many cases, called Feedback.

Depends on your build. Many people say you need a Guardian in dungeons but I for sure do not find that to be true. If you are looking for someone to take hits for ya I can do that on my Mesmer.

If you are looking for group healing I can do that with my Mesmer.

If you are looking for condition removal I can do that but not to the same extent.

If you are looking for swiftness I can do that almost as well.

If you are looking for…..I can’t think of anything my Mesmer can’t do that a Guardian can. In either case both jobs differ based on their builds.

Mesmer is better in my opinion cause I am biased but also we can apply TW which no other profession can and this can make a huge difference in boss fights.

I wouldn’t say any class is a “must” in a dungeon party.

However, mesmers and guardians are the 2 classes that would be considered “musts”. Both have unbelievable utility, and having 1 of each in your party will make your runs of any content in the game go so much smoother.

In PvP/WvW, mesmers and guardians do different things. Guardians are more interruption, they can do a lot of group condition removal and buffing, and they have great area denial skills like sanctuary, line of warding, and circle of warding. Mesmers have portal of course. Additionally, mesmers have the best zergbusting skillset in the game with glamours. They can provide good ranged dps with greatsword, and are fantastic in smaller skirmish parties.

A very general look into it:

PVE – equal in effectiveness (guardians support through might stacks, adequate DPS; mesmers have incredible utilities such as Time Warp which makes it very viable for speed runs).

WvW – depends on your playstyle. (Guardians have a lot of interrupt that can seriously cripple enemy zerg movement while mesmers have glamour skills [confusion stacks] + portals which make them a lot more fun to use in WvW – at least for me :] ).

sPvP – Guardians seem to have an upper hand on this one (especially if they know what they are doing). It takes time to down a guardian that can easily knock you back from a point, preventing you from capturing it. Mesmers, on the other hand, have higher DPS and can be crucial especially against confusion-vulnerable enemies.

Both are very good and very well balanced. I have both and love them both. I chose to gear up my guardian more/first for 1 reason… it’s a VERY stable class. Nerfs/buffs/bugs are pretty rare on a guard. Mesmer is nerfed/buffed/bugged far more often.

Guard is more mele… mesmer is more in and out (or ranged)
Both make great support classes as well.

Feedback is better because it gets placed on the mob, and so will return anything it uses, can lead to much higher damage returns in a lot of situations.

Wall of reflection is better because it lasts longer and is a gtaoe, so you can place it to maximum effectiveness.

PvE : Guardians are better at giving boons and have easy access to the most powerful boons ( protection, stability, aegis) while Mesmers are better at manipulating them ( boon removal, boon stealing, boon duplication via signet … )

WvW zerg : The two classes are actually quite similar, both are used for their overpowered utilities. Guardians will be better front-liners while Mesmers can wreck more chaos in an enemy zerg ( cf prestige confusion builds)
