When you are roaming, what’s your most effective escape method?
Or is it impossible to escape if the other guy has swiftness and really wants to 1v1 you?

kittenter mes u mostly got 1 free spot for portal or condi cleansee or whatever so u can take portal(i would say its best escape mechanism when there r only 1 -2 enemys)
tho barely someone plays shatter mes, every mes i see in wvw r pu mesmers who spam all their stealth skills then die to my single burst >.<
well u can use distortion, if ppl r ccing u a lot and there r static fields wich would stun u after blink or whatever, use decoy for stealth, blink, mass invi- thats how i mostly escape if i dont take portal
edit: as mes who uses shatters
^ first words
idk why it translates em to kittenter

There are seriously so many ways to escape. Depending on the build, but pretty much every build has blink and decoy. You can a) blink to higher ground, he will have to find a way up to get you and by that time you’re gone. If you can’t do that, blink out of a stun or any kind of CC if you’re under it, you can also use decoy to get out of CC and start running a direction, use mass invis and switch your direction, mesmers are slow and you really need to fool him so he is going further from you instead of after you. If you have mirror images, you can spawn them and shatter for distortion to give you a bit of time to blink or to run away ect.

Don’t know much about you, but am not sure you can blink to a higher ground.
But as for ways to escape, we do have a lot of ways, also depending on your build and skills you must have chosen. Simple example,
Weapon = skill number
GS = 4
Staff = 2
Pistol = 5
Focus = 4
Touch = 4
Sorry not going to name all the different utilities that can help nor the traits to pick up to further enhance them, but you get what we are all say.

Like with all teleports, you can blink to higher ground as long as you could walk there without any jumps (with some other hiddens rules, such as it not working corrrectly when blinking up tower stairs).
But yeah, you can use blink to get up ledges. Its best to just go around trying to blink up places as you walk around an you learn where you can and cant do it.

Go to YouTube. Search woodenpotatoes. Find his video about how blinks and shadow steps work
Decoy is probably my favorite. Stealth+clone usually fools even experienced players, because it happens instantly. Most people will murder the clone before they realize you are gone, and if you have CD they are now crippled and you are running away laughing.
Blink is also very good. It can really mess with people when used right, which I love it for. Probably my favorite anti-thief tool.
Rather than theory, I was more looking for experienced WvW mesmers who do this well, to talk about what works for them.

….and thats what you got
Yeah if you have a thief chasing you, an ele, GS/LB Ranger, or a troll warrior. You’re going to get caught if you just run one direction. However you have the means to juke.
Example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?&v=_S1cKi6yzGg#t=473
Use it to your advantage. Phase retreat is the best option when kiting, decoy, mass invis and the F4 invulnerable are other utilities, apart from torch 4.
TLDR: Stealth and Stunbreaks.
Also Traveller/Speed runes help immensely.
Thanks for the specific suggestions. That will be helpful.
I think if you are on an open plain, stealth only helps so long. You also have to have the speed to keep ahead of the pack.
Even though mesmer don’t have a lot of mobility and escape skills we have some good ones! Im usually not much into running when fighting 1v1 or 1v2, but at some point you get outmanned to the point where you have to run.
I run the old school shatter build (20/20/0/0/30) with traveler runes and even with traveler runes, you can’t outrun most classes. As a consequence you have to outsmart them. I use different techniques, one very succesful one is run in one direction, stealth and then run in the complete opposite direction followed by blink to give some distance. This often means that you have to run straight through you opponent, so have F4 ready to avoid his damage.
The trait far reaching manipulation is also a life saver, this makes blinking out of their distance so much easier. As some people mentionen you can blink to higher ground to make them run around to get you. One example of this the camp south of bay. This is a great hunting ground as you have many escape oppotunities and there is generally a high flow through of players. Here you can blink directly onto the bridge next to the sentry and thereby give yourself a break. Be carefull though as thives (Shadowstep), guardians (Judge’s Intervention) and other classes with teleport skills will be able to follow you.
Portal is also a very nice tool to mess with your opponents as well as an excellent escape tool. Lay your portal somewhere safe before you engage and you’ll always have an escape opportunity. Furthermore portal can make stomping downed players without getting interrupted a walk in the park. See osicat’s videos on youtube. He demonstrates nicely how you can use portal.
So for me it comes down to these 3 ways:
1. Stealth and run in an unexpected direction
2. Blink to higher ground
3. Portal away
Option 1 seems to get the trick done mostly. (to the people i fight: I never never do this of course ;-))
Even though these are excellent, there are some classes that you can’t escape unless you outsmart them, like thives, warriors etc.
Hope that helped

Well, stealth is the only real escape tool you have.
Shadowstepping is easily countered by any class that can leap. You don’t have reliable swiftness outside focus. Even with all of these, a thief or warrior is usually still faster than you.
With speed/trav runes you are getting there, but you’re still one of the slowest classes overall. I’d focus on build that can take down your opponent instead of running away.
Mesmers tend to get stronger the longer they can fight in one spot, use that to your advantage.
An easy tip is to go 90 degrees in decoy+blink, it is the blindspot for every player and can buy you enough time to reach far away.
Also if there’re water nearby, dive in. Mesmer’s mobility (spear 2 and 4) is almost unmatched underwater. Wish there’re more underwater area though.
Turn 180, blink, pray.
Nice Nike,
Cool tip! Thanks!
Another thing: Most players won’t notice you when you’re hiding behind a corner:
You wouldn’t think so but it actually works extremly well
Also you could just jump down a cliff while being invisible.
as a roamer u can use blink and invis to escape, also portal is not bad for that
Me Games Ma,
Very nice! Thanks!
Traveler or speed runes and stealth is more than enough for me in most situations. You can blink and heal while stealthed, you can even portal while stealthed.
Running in one direction while channeling mass invisibility and turning around the moment you stealth will fool pretty much everybody except for skilled players, but even they will have to take a guess which direction you went. If everything is off cooldown you can chain the stealth for 10+ seconds of stealth which should obviously be enough to hide or run from an army.
In short stealth, juke, blink/portal while stealthed if you can’t use terrain to increase distance between you. If you don’t want to chain stealth in a situation, don’t blow everything at once so you can keep juking.
PU is pretty much immortal roaming while minding cooldowns. Personally I don’t even use portal or veil, torch4, decoy and mass invisibility is enough. Only really skilled thieves give me trouble occasionally, probably because they understand blink/stealth more than others and they can definitely keep up with you.
Thanks, Alex.
Here’s some vid containing running away
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4GZ6UgA_MUo
Stealth + misdirection + high swiftness uptime + long range blinks + portals + boon stealing (arcane thievery).
One time I dropped a portal, swam away, dropped the other end and instead of taking the portal I stealthed instead. The enemy players turned to go back for the other portal end while I continued on in the other direction.
Here you go. This will give you a good idea on what you can do for yourself and your team.
Thanks, everyone!
I think I am going to practice be seeing how well I can run across enemy territory to get practice with these techniques.
Also, make sure you bind a key to rear view so you can easily look behind you while running forward. I bound it to V which is right next to space and easily used with my thumb at any time. I use it frequently and don’t get caught off-guard as much.
Perhaps blatantly obvious, but it’s one of those things that are not bound to a key by default so it can be missed.
