I was just wondering, is the pink ability color just a in game representation(that each class was instantly recognized by their abilities) or is a lore thing? Can an in-lore mesmer make his abilities green or blue or whatever or would they be still pink?

Without knowing the exact answer, I think class colors are mostly something carried over from GW1. Because of the dual class system and a huge skill pool in that game, color-coded skills made more sense back then than they do in GW2.

Have to be pink – there was a particular reason why this is.

Well in GW1 it wasn’t really pink, more purple.

Also, all classes had a class color I’m gw1 regardless of skills.

All icons of the elementalist were red, but not most skills gave the red color due to… Elements….

Monk- the iconic blue color is present in almost all Monk skills and icons.

Ranger- Ranger focused on a yellowish (lighter) side of green, like the grass in the fields. Almost all icons were this color and even some skills presented a yellow green including attack skills.

Necromancer – they were the Green green, or the “dark” green. All icons except signets were green and most, if not all, skills were green visuals or black.

Ritualists- Teal / blue green. Literally all skills and icons were this color, even the spirits were teal.

….
You get what I’m saying. I don’t think there is a lore reason. It’s pretty nice though, you know your fighting a Mesmer when pink (use to be purple) colors pop up on the screen

It was more pink than purple really and the reasons Mesmer’s skills were that color had to do with the movie the ‘Butterfly Effect’.

……. No…

I have no clue why you cite the movie instead of the theory.

The only thing butterfly about mesmers (in gw1) was soothing images. In fact, their profession symbol was some eye in a hand (which has an Indian meaning about the evil eye, if I remember)

In gw2 is another story, mesmers dropped the evil eye symbol for that of butterflies, most likely to represent Chaos

How nobody has mentioned Lyssa yet is beyond me. Lyssa, the twin goddess of beauty is (well, more accurately WAS) the patron goddess of Mesmer’s back in Gw1, and her color is Purple/Pink.

Butterflies being added in gw2 are probably just a nod the the Butterfly Effect thing.

I´ve read the original Mesmer wore a purple cape when he tried to heal people with his “animal magnetism”. Perhaps this was an inspiration for ANet.

If you read the developers blog for GW1, they said that the Butterfly Effect was part of the inspiration (heh). Also since GW1 mesmers do Chaos damage – hence the butterfly also and the pink/purple color

GW1 was partially based on Magic. Mesmer was inspired by the blue deck of MtG, so they used a blue-ish color.
