Mesmer and a Sheild?
I no like shield. I like MH Pistol. We are duelists after all.

Hmmm… Maybe skill 4 could be another mimic that blocks and grants retaliation-on-hit while hitting the attacker with confusion. I would have considered it too powerful before the nerf but now it seems just about right. As for a phantasm, we already have a defender so how about one that does nothing but mirror the damage it receives back at the attacker. That would be an awesome psych out power! I imagine, any traits for the shield would be in the Chaos line. I’d suggest adding a 20% skill cooldown reduction to shields with the Mirror of Anguish trait. Then it’s practically ready for shipping!
Of course we’re going to get people that say, “Shields don’t fit the Mesmer,” but I can’t imagine a better image of a duelist than one carrying a sword and shield. Being that such a person is an unorthodox mage, I’d say it would fit the Mesmer perfectly.
I like almost any weapon other than axes so I’d be down with anything.
To bad shields are not part of A-nets design choice for scholars unless a they change their minds

Neither are greatswords.
That being said, I also don’t really see the shield as a dueling weapon, and so don’t really see it fitting on a mesmer.
i really think it would be awesome if every class that the option to use every weapon type in a unique way. So I think shield would be awesome. Someone mentioned a bow earlier; I think that would be amazing as well. I like the idea for a hammer also. There was a cute, little light armored character in this game called The Legend of Dragoon that wielded a hammer and I thought it was pretty awesome. I don’t see any reason why in the future, every class shouldn’t have every weapon type available…. especially since each class wields each weapon differently

A shield with a mirror theme would work very well with the Mesmer, the problem is the Focus already sort-of has that mirror theme with Warden’s Feedback granting both its skills Reflection. Another off-hand with Reflection may be redundant.
What mesmers need is a good main hand weapon, the only viable one now is sword. So I’m not that pro shield since it’s supposed to be off-hand

That’s because duelists dont use shields. They use bucklers. Same concept, way more finesse involved.
From wiki:
The buckler was more widely used than is commonly known. It was a simple yet effective weapon, often combined with a short sword, falchion, or rapier. It was popular circa 1100 to 1600.1 The buckler had a variety of roles when it came to swordplay, but five principal means come to the fore as described in MS I.33. Each use recognizes the shield’s small size and maneuverability when dealing with light blades.
Hand protection: The primary use of the buckler was to protect the sword hand.
Deflector: The buckler’s lightness and curved center made it excellent for deflecting attacking blades.
Blinder: The light blades used in conjunction with the buckler depended on rapid movements, which meant that a single second was an important advantage. The wielder of the buckler could use the buckler to shield his sword-hand’s position from view, keeping his opponent from guessing his next strike.
“Metal fist”: A buckler could be used to directly attack an opponent by punching with either its flat face or its rim.
Binder: The buckler could be used to bind an opponent’s sword hand and weapon as well as their buckler against their body. The buckler was also very useful in grappling, where it allowed an opponent’s arms to be easily wrapped up and controlled.

Used for light and to blind opponents at night.
Not a fan of shield, stylistically, as a duelist class, shield seems too standard soldier… Frankly, I think it’d make more sense for there to be a main-hand sword only option, with additional skills, as most duels are fought that way.
As far as other mainhands, people have suggested main hand pistol, which could be neat. If there were a mainhand pistol, it might be neat to have it mirror the greatsword, by being an amazing melee/tanking weapon. But not sure how that’d fly.
I think mesmers could be fleshed out more with a weapon that focuses on speed an mobility at the cost of power and overt defense. Daggers work for this, but it may not work with the flavor of mesmer either. In either case, if more weapons were added, I’d like to see one that makes me juke all over the place, and can drop a mediocre phantasm quickly….then again, maybe that would be overpowered with glass-cannon shatter builds.

So you’d like to be a dagger wielding thief? :p
We got a shield already, including a nifty Phantasm to carry it.
Ross, my alt is a thief…guess it’s the thing I miss when playing mesmer.
