hello players: recently i bought this game which was 2 days ago. i made a mesmer and i sort of liked them, but then i got moved to a server and all my chars were gone. before i made a mesmer i was wondering r they easy to lvl or hard? cause one of my friends says that mesmers r really hard to lvl and they r not very good until lvl 40. but he says that they r perfect for pvp. i was wondering if u can answer my questions:

1) are mesmers that hard to lvl?
2) r they perfect in pvp?
3)and if they r hard to lvl, can u give me a way to lvl up fast? i might make ine a sylvari or human?
4) and wat r the best weapons to be used?

1. Early levels can be dull, tough, but pays off later on. The playstyle of the Mesmer should keep you playing anyways. It’s a great class and very unique.

2. They’re awesome for pvp.

3. Don’t try to rush and level up as fast as possible. Try to enjoy the game as much as
possible. If you want to add on in leveling always craft as well. For mesmers Tailor/Weaponsmith is good, artificer and cook is cheap. Go with who you like, human, sylvari whoever.

4. Greatsword/S/P or Greatsword/Staff

I’d advice you to level a Mesmer if its the first class you ever make in this game.
Otherwise, the absence of swiftness or other speed/travel effects will really make the world feel slow and agonizing. =P

The greatsword is good for a power build which is why I recommend it for starting with. Try to keep your distance when using it as the further you are, the more damage the auto-attack does. If enemies come closer, the staff is a good weapon to switch to. While it does less damage, it gives enemies debuffs while giving you might and fury, I think. If you’re good at dodging 1hand sword is even better. It will allow you to get in an enemy’s face and while using #2, you are invulnerable for 2 seconds. When properly timed, it’s better than blocking.

A lot of people seem to recommend greatsword/staff. Personally, I don’t see the synergy. One wants power, the other wants condition damage. The one thing they have in common would be precision, with staff wielders going for power only for shatters.

I’d much rather propose going Greatsword and Sword/Sword or Greatsword and Sword/Pistol

Easy. One of the easiest. (I have 5 classes at level 80 now)

All you need is greatsword and staff. Traits and build don’t matter while leveling. Don’t even bother with shatters, just let all your illusions die naturally.

When you hit 80, that’s when you start worrying about build and how to shatter correctly.

The synergy is in he flow between the weapons themselves. Don’t worry about condition damage versus power/crit. Any old armor stats will do.

BTW staff hit hard even with zero +Condition Damage. Dont believe me? Look at all the Knights or Soldier armor used in shatter tank builds, most of which use staff on the weapon swap.

I like a staff with sword /focus for pve, I’ve only just started playing, lvl59 mesmer now. Its as easy as you want to make it imo you can push yourself or find easier tasks as you get exp from crafting and exploring the world its not hard to level. What is hard is learning to be a good player, understanding all the weapon options and skill and trying them out, which you can do in wvw , it will be a while before I am ‘good’
If you like being toe to toe with your enemy then you should pick something else, but if you like to keep your distance give it a try.

one last thing, wat r the best 2 weapon choices to take as mesmer???? just need opinions and plz explanation why u chose it

As long as you have a staff as one of your weapons you should be fine. My mesmers only lv 43 an the only lvling problem I have is with dungeons when I get focused… Then again that’s a party issue not mesmer issue.

1) Mesmer is by far the slowest and most difficult class to level, that being said it’s really not too bad. Just expect all other classes to be easier.
2) PvP is entirely skill based. If you’re bad you’ll die until you learn to be better. If you’re aware that you’re bad and you kill other players as a mesmer it’s because they are worse. Mesmer noobs do very well vs other noobs in pvp because the clones confuse people. Advanced Mesmer pvp is a lot harder, you will be carrying team fight utilities and should expect to get focused right after the necro on your team.

and one last thing, im currently using 2x 1h sword and staff, wat status do i have to focus on??? vitality,power,toughness..etc

Seems like you’re using two defensive, close-ranged weapon setups.

I beg to differ. Strongly. Mesmer was the 5th class I pushed up to 80 and it was probably 2nd easiest across the board, with only Warrior being easier.

Did you level with some weapon combo other than Greatsword plus Staff? If so, that might explain your perception. With GS + Staff, you can constantly and continually pop out clones and phantasms, and have access to all kinds of utility and straight up damage (especially from GS1). No mob will ever get close to you, not even in a swarm. Things melt. Especially when you get near level 40 and start learning how useful 15 seconds of retaliation from your F2 shatter (with the proper 10-point trait) is.

Mesmer is dirt easy to level, especially if you simply swap weapons constantly to take advantage of TEN attacks and not only FIVE attacks.

Heck, for that matter, one of my guildies was a Mesmer on her first char and she never used anything but Staff in battle. She used Sword/Focus only for faster running from place to place. Even with just a staff alone, she was untouchable. She was always the one taking the least damage and often the “last person standing” when things went bad with a really big overpull or unexpected adds.

1) If easy means you auto-attack your way through 80 levels, no, Mesmer is not easy. If easy means having a blast while leveling, yes, Mesmer is kitten easy.
2) A well played Mesmer is a force in pvp.If pvp is what you’re into, Mesmers not a bad place to start at all. Perfect for annoying other players, without a doubt.
3) Believe it or not, you can get a lot of levels by crafting. Don’t ever vendor your mats, and when killing things gets boring, use them up and you can gain 5 or 10 levels more or less effortlessly.
4) That’s entirely about how you want to play. Staff is very defensive and supporty. Sword has good DPS. GS is good ranged DPS. Scepter is ranged (and that’s the nicest thing I can say about it – some like it, its not my favorite.)

Being totally honest, I found levelling my mesmer to be barely harder than my Warrior (though my mesmer is level 65 and my warrior is capped at level 80). My main weapons was Greatsword/Staff until very recently, where its now Greatsword/Sword|Sword though I do still have my staff and a focus handy too for the moments that I need to have access to their skills. Try mesmer, and from what I can tell, you will either love it or have a tepid sensation in your heart, but I don’t think you’ll hate it.

PvP wise I don’t know what they’re like as I’ve never really done PvP before, but in WvW they’re a lifesaver at times. Many a time I’ve seen people being tricked by the Mesmer clones and phantasms, every hit your clones take is one that you don’t have to.

but recently im using a staff and 2x 1h sword and i rarely die cause i keep swapping and i use my phatasm leap with my staff and cast away chaos storm. and i also keep swapping.

Weapon/Attunement dancing is the way to go.

I’ve got a character of each class, most of them at 10 or so, with elementalist at 25. The easiest levelling on single targets has been with warrior and guardian. Mesmer feels like it’s in the middle.

For weapons, I’ve liked the great sword and the sword/sword combo.

(its possibly the most frustrating open PvE class until lvl 80 imho….this comes form an ele player ._. that is possibly second worse).

Personally I leveled all +Condition damage based with staff and it was probably the easiest character I ever leveled. Even 1 clone with the bounce attacks and anything equal level died in a few seconds. By the time you get the extra bounce at 40 and Clone on Dodge at 50 the whole thing becomes hilariously easy.

I still remember doing some event in my 50s where a group of us got swarmed by like 20ish undead with 2 Veterans and as everyone else died I was still up kiting around and killed everything.

Honestly though the only two characters I had trouble leveling were Engineer 1-80 and Elementalist pre-40. Everything else has been pretty much just rolling over content.

Define “easy”. Pressing just one button? Won’t work. Killing and thus progressing quickly? Also won’t work. Not spending any gold on repair costs and waypoints because you hardly die? Absolutely. I love my mesmer. If only the bugs would be fixed and there was some certainty on the things to come concerning balancing attempts…

Im now leveling my 2nd Mesmer. (I know its kinda silly but I love them) The first mesmer was a sylvari and I leveled him with Carrion gear staff Main and sword/focus off hand which I only used for traveling.

While this build didnt kill anything very fast it was very durable, and I rarely died. I could solo champs no prob. Not Veterans I do mean Champs. Veterans were like normal mobs. They were really easy.

My second mesmer is an Asura. Im going full Zerker gear with the GS and while he isnt quite as durable he hits like a truck and stuff dies alot faster. I run with the staff as a second weapon set for survive-ability. I use the sigil of inspiration for the occasional speed buff when running around. It helps; I also heard there was a rune that grants swiftness with heals I need to look into.

The only other class I leveled to 80 was a Guardian. He was an absolute blast to level. I still pull him out of the stable all the time when I wanna play an in yer face kinda class that offers alot of support. Plus blue fire is really cool amirite?

Are Mesmers hard to level? Thats kind of a difficult question to answer. If the question was are they hard for me? Then that would be a firm No. However they may be hard for some. They have a bit of a learning curve. Once you dial them in though in my humble opinion I believe the Mesmer is the best offering; from they Professions they included in the game.

1) I find leveling in general on any class to be tedious, but didn’t find leveling my Mesmer (first and so far only character to 80) to be at all difficult. I strongly disagree with anyone who says otherwise to the point where I’d say these folks are likely “playing wrong”.
2) Nothing’s perfect – but they are powerful. Sometimes to the point where you see QQ threads about them being OP (which I find bs).
3) Can’t help you here. I took my time and leveled strictly in PVE. My alts are leveling in WvW…some people drop coin and power level through crafting. I don’t think that’s the best way to enjoy the game though.
4) In PvE my weapon set is Staff / Greatsword. In WvW my weapon set is generally Staff / Sword&Torch, with liberal use of focus for fast map traveling.

When I first leveled, I went full staff tank/shatter spec (0/0/20/20/30 in traits) and was kitten near impossible to kill (I was always the last one standing in any fight).
Once I became comfortable with the class I traded vitality for precision (0/20/20/0/30) and got the clone-on-dodge trait. While I miss having the higher health pool sometimes, the second build is awesome for always having clones to shatter – which means generally ending fights faster.

Very easy, but also very slow.

Mesmer was the last class I started playing and getting to level up was a pain in the neck. I felt too squishy for a while. And It depends on what you want to do. If you want to go full GC and shatter as often as you can ignore all other traits and once you get to lvl 30 go the full 20 pts in dueling to get Deceptive evasion. If you want to run a phantasm army (what I currently do) Go into the vitality tree and pick up the persisting images trait along with the phantasms have regen/retal. You can become super tanky. The class is very versatile with most of that coming from how you spend your trait points. So my advice before you invest heavily in PvE leveling go to the Heart of the Mists and dink around with traits/runes/weapons its basically a free training ground where you can get all weapons armor runes and accessories for free and see what you like also it allows you to refund your traits for free. It’s all personal taste and what you want to do. Just remember if you run glass cannon and go insta boom from a wet sneeze don’t be ticked off that’s what happens.
