Guild Wars 2

Hello boys and girls,

I’m really hoping you can help me, I have started playing Guild Wars a year ago and I still don’t have a level 80 believe it or not but I think I finally found a profession I love, my highest level characters are my Level 60 and 66 Ranger and Thief and now my level 65 Mesmer, the reason I rerolled from Ranger is because I love doing Dynamic events but didn’t think he was very fun, same with the Thief where you just spam with your Shortbow, so I made a Mesmer and fell in love with it’s combat system and skills.

The only problem is I really struggle tagging mobs! By the time I do anything they are pretty much dead, and it’s not that I’m slow, I PvP quite a lot both in this game and League of Legends so my reaction times are actually pretty fast, I know this is a damage issue because my girlfriend is levelling a Guardian and her guardian is 10 levels lower then my mesmer and she literally 2 shots mobs that I have to use both my weapon sets to kill.

I have tried Staff and found it too slow, Greatsword is faster but doesn’t do enough damage either, I found Sword to be the best damage weapon but it’s melee so in events it’s not as optimal in my opinion.

Can someone please recommend me a build/weapon sets that really specialise in Dynamic Events as that’s what I love to do?

Also does any one know any good WvW and Dungeon guides a nearly level 80 Mesmer should read?

Staff and greatsword are probably your best choices to tag mobs in events because of iZerker and Chaos Storm.

Yeah, greatsword is your friend here. Both your auto attack and your iZerker are nearly instant 1200 range aoe damage attacks, so once you get good with positioning, you should be fine.

For events go for GS + Sword / Focus.

I’ll second the greatsword, sword+focus suggestion. You can use the focus pull to group things up inside your Warden’s AoE — cast curtain against a rock/tree/other obstruction, start casting warden on your target, and hit 4 again to pull everything together just as the warden spawns on top of them. Follow up with an Illusionary Leap and Swap into the middle of the group to keep them crippled/immobilized inside the warden, and hit Blurred Frenzy then Mind Wrack (as soon as the warden’s done spinning) to finish them all off.

Adding a Sigil of Fire to the GS helps a ton too, because the fire blasts proc very often on its triple-attack, and tags everything in the vicinity of your target.

The low damage issue may be down to gear and trait build — how are you set up?

Thanks for your suggestions, I am actually using Greatsword + Sword/Focus right now and I do that already.

Sigil of Fire Greatsword sounds like something I can have a look at . I still prefer Sword/Sword or Sword/Pistol but I got used to Focus #4 and now can’t live without it.

Thanks for everyone’s comments by the way, really appreciate it, I really want to stick with Mesmer and not dump him like I did the Ranger and Thief but Events/Zergs are something really important to me, I may be one of the weird ones but I genuinely enjoy them rather then fighting in small perhaps more organised groups.
