Mesmer leveling spec?
What you feel comfortable with… honestly.
Always have 5 points into Illusion.
Always have 5 points into Illusion.
Should i put my first 5 points into it? and should i put any points to increase my HP pool?
First 5 points should go into Illusion.
HP pool … shrug.
The raw stats from the trait lines don’t matter too much. The traits you pick up are much more significant. Rely on your gear for stats.
I think Decoy is a nice 1-point skill to get early on with Mesmer. Gives you some experience using your illusions defensively, and can give you space to watch your offensive illusions and see what they’re doing.
Weapon-switching can be important to learn early on, gives you more interesting illusion combos and (usually) a block.
For Greatsword (a ranged weapon for Mesmers), I like to focus gear on power/precision. Staff has a lot more condition damage to it, so you’ll want to spread out more. I would recommend not putting too many points in Toughness/Vitality, as you can end up feeling like you don’t do any damage.

It’s really up to you, because before you get to 40 you’ll have 10 in 3 trait lines. It just is a godsend to have 20% CD reduction on Illusion skills.
I agree with Controller that Decoy is a great first skill to get.
A lot of what you’re asking is dependent on how you’d like to play btw.
A good place to start is building to traits that reduce cool down on your favorite weapons. None of those are a waste. Along the way try everything and see what clicks for you. One thing I did t know for an embarrassingly long time is that you don’t need to retrain to swap out the optional traits. You only have to retrain if you want to reallocate your trait points into different lines.
I never found a way to make a confusion build shine for PVE, but pretty well everything else worked out. A glass cannon solos just fine, but know that your first dungeon will be a shock if you aren’t traited for survival.
Mesmer’s aren’t the fastest leveller’s regardless of what your going to be using, you should go with whatever seems to work best for you. I personally found Greatsword and Staff to work best for me but if you’re happy to get in close to mobs you can always go Sword/pistol for some good damage and maybe switch out pistol to focus for the speed skill.
I never really bothered with what gear I used until I hit 80, once I could buy Light Armor for karma after finishing the heart quests I just used those until 80.
I run full berserker gear now with ruby gear for Power/Precision/Crit rate to boost my damage out put and I’ve never really felt “squishy” but when it comes down to it you should play whatever feels best to you.
I would suggest going into The Mists and trying out PvP, all the gear and stuff is free so you can try as many build/weps/stats/traits as you want until you find something that fits your play style.
You’ll want to get the Ether Feast heal skill asap as its the best heal skill we have.
The first tier of unlocks, the best ones to go for are blink/decoy/null field. Blink is great for getting out of a sticky situation when you need to by yourself some more time. Decoy is much the same excepts summons an illusion. Null field will cure you of conditions but is also a combo field so you can drop it on a mob and then fire off say GS skill 2 (mirrorblade) and get the physical projectile finisher combo.
Also you could look up the The Comprehensive Mesmer Guide videos on YouTube, a guy has done like 4 videos which I found really helpful!
Gandara
thanks for all the advice guys. going to have to mess around with weapon set up.
I love the great sword. i will most likely keep that for my ranged option. spinning a great sword to make a lighting bolt…. yeah……
The staff is cool but doesnt really seem to do alot of damage at my level.

Nope, dmg on Staff only ramps up after you get the Extra bounce trait and more Condition damage. After that it’s pretty strong/kind of bursty. That’s why it’s got the toughness trait line, you gotta be near the NPCs to benifit from all that.
GS is very bursty, long range/mid range. I’ve seen some Sword/Focus and or Sword level pretty fast since they go Power/Crit more often. So if I were to “scale” what’s fastest I’d say GS/Sword + off hand is. However, if that isn’t your play style it’ll be slower for you ‘cause if you ain’t enjoying it, it will feel a bit grueling.
Also, take heed as mentioned above Mesmer is pretty slow to level until you start filling out Traits.
Thanks Thehunt for the information. im goin spend some time in the mist to try builds out. i’m sure PVE builds are completely different then PVP builds but hey its a start
