Hey, so I play a shatter mesmer with traveler runes and I’m a bit frustrated by my mobility in WvW , almost every class I fight are able to escape/run away from me when things goes wrong for them.

So I have no way to catch a running warrior , thief , elementalist, ranger
Some guardians are also almost impossible to catch
Necro and engineer seems to be the ones that share the same lack of mobility than me.

So I end up being the guy that need other people to “want to fight” for the fight to happens, I feel I’m not able to chase people that wants to flee.

So my question is simple, is there somethings I missed ? What could I do to improve my mobility ? are travelers runes the limit for mesmer when it comes to mobility ?

As a start mesmers are slow but at the same time EXTREMLY mobile. No. other classe have the same spawny mobility exept thiefs and in some ways we outmatch even them. Its al about learn to use the tools we have. Straff is one, give extreme agility and take ages to master. The amount of obsticles and terrains it can climb are unmatched. Another is portal, and ofc traited blink.

We are in general better at mobility in running or fighting than in pure chasing. For chasing you need to use staff smart combined with blink and cc, if you can get infront of target staff blink in front of it and keep preasure.

Yet we still need runes or moa feather a for full time speed.
Both expansive and take out some other good options for your builds…
I think a passive speed signet would be good…
But yep, not your problem only, we are not good at chasing if people really want to escape, you cant make a portal foward but the mobility on battle is good enough lol

That’s why you play shatter. You won’t catch anyone except a necro, but you can burst down most people before they can start running away.

Depending on what you’re running, There is a lot of things that can help you catch a player, almost every weapon has something!

Greatsword iZerker (cripple), no way they will outrun you with cripple on them. Skill #5 can also be used for a quick KD. Autoattack for maintaining ranged pressure. You can use mirror blade + iZerker and as soon as the zerker passes through him, you can mind wrack, if he’s not at full HP there is a chance you’ll get him down.

Staff Phase Retreat can be used to go forwards (multiple ways, one is to use the about face key, use PR, about face again. Osicat has a great video on catching targets that are REALLY far away)

Scepter This may sound silly but the confusion(even though you’re in a power build), whenever they will use a running skill(which a lot of people spam a lot), they will get damage, if you’ve shattered on them, they will probably have low HP and no heal (otherwise they wouldn’t of ran) so they will have to use mobility skills wisely, and lastly torment from block. It’s easier said than done but if you manage to put torment on them, it will help you loads. If they move they get more damage from it, if they stay still you kill them. Lets say they’re on low HP with no heal, they’re going down for sure. They can remove it but even if they did, at least they stopped for a second to remove it, that’s one second that you were getting closer to them and they were standing still.

Sword Swap immobilize, it can be hard to pull off but if you run GS/S+X you Mirror Blade + the iZerker trick, they’ll have cripple on them, you should be able to swap to them and immobilize them, F2 shatter + Blurred Frenzy

Focus place it in front of them, they go across it = cripple, when they get a little bit of distance from it pull them back.

Pistol Magic Bullet stun + phantasm can be useful to put damage into players as they’re on the run

Sword OH can be used with the swordsman but I’m not 100% sure how effective it is at putting the final pressure into running targets
Torch will only give you stealth and retal + confusion, not really much..

You have a lot of utilities, I think all shatter builds have decoy + blink, blink is a 900-1200 (depending on if you took the trait) gap closer, I also run portal which can come in handy if you put it down before a fight and the target just happens to go in that direction.

I wish the Magic bullet and the phantasm dueler would also cause cripple. This would make them so much more viable in WvW and PvP.

You’re not going to catch a GS warrior or a thief who really wants to get away. Movement skills > everything when it comes to closing or creating gaps.
And when it comes to actual movement and positioning, mesmers are pretty much limited to Blink and Staff #2. I just don’t think that’s ever going to be enough.
Swap will do the trick sometimes, but you need to be very fast/have cripple on target or get in front of them somehow.
The biggest problem for me is that runners basically restrict you from using shatters because clones are so kitten ed slow. I wish there was a trait like Phantasmal Fury that gave them endless swiftness instead.

Magic Bullet gives 2 seconds of stun, that is much better than cripple. You can do wonders in those 2 seconds. There are a lot of ways to catch thieves or warriors. If you will be able to do it or not depends if you have the skill you need to do it off cooldown and if you’re using a weapon that has that skill.

Centaur runes + tonic = perm swiftness. That’s 8% faster than traveler.
Blink, greatsword and longer immobilize/cripple durations with +cond duration food can help.

Yeah, as said – most times you will not catch a warrior or thief who is determined to escape, no matter what build or equipment you use.

Of course, using some form of +movement speed helps to run/chase, but otherwise, depending on your weapons, skills and traits, just got to be creative with the wide variety of mobility (not movement speed) and crowd control skills available.

Imagine you’re like a little sparrow or robin – you are very agile and fast point to point, but can’t keep up with a horse running at high speed over a large distance (ie, warrior).

Only way to catch is clever use of terrain, movement and skills – blinks (staff and sword too), pulls, cripples, ranged attacks, boon strip, daze, stuns, immobilise, etc…

I hunted down your other mobility video, didn’t realize staff 2 moved you directly away from whoever you had targeted, even if they’re behind you.

It seems like a lot of Mesmer skills have unnecessary issues with terrain like blink and illusionary leap.

Every profession that has a teleport (ele, thief, mesmer) can teleport on higher platforms IF you can get there by walking,. It needs to be completely walking, no jumping.

It seems like a lot of Mesmer skills have unnecessary issues with terrain like blink and illusionary leap.

In this case Osi used the common sword #3 illusionary leap on top of the hill, fell down the hill then used #3 swap to blink back. It’s a great skill to really mess with people and excellent to manage positioning. The tendency for many mesmers is to use ileap/swap offensively but using defensively in this way is just as important.
