The reason for that if you go clone way and trait for em you are playing Guild wars 1 Necromancer Minion bomber .
If you go phantasm way then you have pets who deal damage for you if they are out.
The shatter is there so we don’t feel that we are a pet class because we can shatter em.
this is the worst mechanic for Mesmer.
Mesmer should have more magic tricks punish people for making the wrong choice
I think ArenaNet can do better than this.
I think we should only have clones on our weapons when ppl attak em they get punshed for that.
and since the shatter is useless (we can get anythying the shatter offer from skills) , move the phantasms to F1-F4. so we don’t have the feeling that the only thing we are doing is summoning.
then put some good skills on our weapons like SS spiteful spirit and make it Aoe (apply Confusion on foes ).

I disagree whole-heartedly.

Shattering is a great skill, Confusion is an amazing mechanic and it’s there for either a. extra burst, b. condition damage, c. help the mesmer survive. And they work very well at this. The low durations just mean you have to L2P.

I like how the phantasms are, they feel like focus spells more than pets. They’re NOT pets.

Clone way? Minion bomber? Try to mix it up, clones and phantasms, you want a class that only does one thing and does it very well? Don’t want to weapon swap? Ouch, that sucks.

People do get punished for making the wrong decision, that’s what confusion is, also you can trait clones to put conditions to people when they’re killed. GG

Our weapon skills are fine, they combo well. Duelist + Stun + sword skills with the cripple teleport and high burst? Yes please, swap to GS push em away make them vulnerable, berserker and the buffed auto attack? Yes please.

I like the state of the Mesmer, then again I like to think I know how to play.

My friend was complaining to me that my warrior was killing stuff to fast and that he felt his character wasn’t doing enough each encounter. I switched to a mesmer and we no longer have that problem. Even when I try I can’t kill things fast. lol, so the class is good for something.

Just curious as to the point of this post. Don’t like it? Don’t play it. Personally I love my meaner and the less people playing it and figuring it out the better I look LOL. as to the post about members doing no damage compared to a warrior, I wonder what level you’re at? On my meaner I can cast chemist switch to greatsword cast server and hick my sword followed by a shatter and not much lives through that.

Mesmer was the first class I played in GW1, and it’s still my first class in GW2. Personally, I like the fact that they managed to make them still function as indirect damage-dealers. Winds of Chaos doesn’t deal a whole lot of damage itself, but it’s guaranteed to apply a condition that yields more damage over time. Confusing Images lands a mighty five stacks of confusion which can easily yield more damage in one attack than the five hits of the beam did. With scepter/sword, you’ve got two counterattack skills in your first five, dealing damage while avoiding some yourself.

No, it is not a class that can pick off enemies as quickly as a warrior. But if you’re thinking strictly in terms of DPS, mesmer is not a class for you. It takes finesse and skill to pull off, but it definitely pays off. The reactive nature of the class requires you to, well, react to your foes rather than to just run in and smack them like you would any other enemy. Personally, I find that makes it the least boring play style possible.

Only problem atm is shatter lag .

That delay of having illusions running to your target and causing damage is horrendous.

Imho, its easy to fix.

1) give immunity to illusions upon shatter. ( still takes time to cause the damage, but at least its not completly wasted.
2) have the damage / condition be applied straight away.

Apart from that, mesmer rocks. Were the silent killers that no one notices. We give an “absurd” amount of support and utility , not to mention condition spammers like no other.

I also wholeheartedly disagree with the OP. Minion bombing in GW1 was a completely different experience from the GW2 Mesmer. Also… Spiteful Spirit was an indeed awesome skill, and I’d love to see its like again—on necros, where it belongs. The Mesmer as it exists in GW2 is still capable of all the stuff that made it rewarding in GW1—interrupts, punishment, disables, etc. It does these things differently—but so does every other profession that’s made the transition. While I’m genuinely sympathetic if you feel the illusion mechanic is a thematic departure, it’s far from useless, and it’s not getting an overhaul. If you absolutely can’t stand to take the time to master it—which, to be fair, is no easier feat than mastering the GW1 Mesmer—then you should probably just play something you find more enjoyable. There are plenty of us over here who think this profession is immensely fun, and we wouldn’t change it.

I also agree with Lctl about the shatter lag, and either of those fixes would be fine. On one hand I don’t think it would be balanceable to have the shatters happen instantly (and, consequently, unavoidably), but on the other, having the illusions become invulnerable during the death charge is unfair as well (especially if someone believes a clone is the Mesmer at the time). I’m not sure if there’s a fix to this problem, but it hasn’t been game-breaking to me in sPVP—yet anyway. Perhaps make them do an adjusted portion (30-75%?) of the shatter effect to their target if they’re killed en route (assuming the target doesn’t evade)? I’m not sure.

Peace and safety.

Ok I’m assuming the OP has never ripped 6 players from the battlememts of a fort? or had thirty + reds run after you only for you to ziip back to the start of the chase when you droppe a portal? Or the immense satisfaction of seeing reds chase you over a cliff and then ziip back up to the top?

I’ve found the Mesmer to be the best kept secret in the game (very much like the Spirit Master in Aion). I can cloak my entire battlegroup, pile into a Zerg and see the shock when we all decloak on or behind them.

Also being able to double the attack speed of an entire attack group for ten seconds is just epic. As for one on one fights a rarely lose, the only place I find myself struggling in underwater because the spear skills are a bit annoying.

I would recomend this class to anyone.

IF you guys read what I said my problem is with the shatter mechanic I’m lvl 50 Mesmer and I almost never touch the F1-F4.
the tow play styles that we have are phantasm build and clone/condition(nobody play mantra cuz it is boring and need alot of love.) both don’t beneft from the shatter cuz if we shatter we lose phanasms and clones dont trigger the on death traits.
what i’m asking is for more play styles that involve doing magic tricks.

I admit that our ability to punish specific choices is hampered by our options. We either feed back moves or inflict confusion. But I don’t know how complicated the could make it. And when you land a feedback bubble on a thief during the full spin dagger elite for the first time only to have them kill themselves… Joy. Pure joy.

You laugh because you think I’m joking. I laugh because I’m not.

Loving the Mesmer, so I absolutely disagree. The Mesmer has a variety of playstyles. Shattering can be made into a build and do a LOT of dmg, you can use your clones to tank or do dmg yourself. Work with boons and conditions, support the group, crowd control enemies, … .

I would agree in one thing though: There are so many things I think would fit a mesmer, it’s a little sad it got limited to conditions and illusions basically.
