Mesmer race for wvw
You will have a slightly easier time with an asura. Better racials (though they are not really needed) and smaller size for JP.
But charr are infinitely cooler.

Charr are cooler than Asura … lol … but that doesn’t matter because Norn beats all ;-)
Try your best to not make mistakes, but, when you do make mistakes, learn from them.

JP?
JP = jumping puzzle
Charr are a horrible nightmare in a jumping puzzle compared to other races (especially Asura)

An asura is harder to spot in wvwvw, however they have the smallest FOV which means you need to move a lot to see past bushes. While a norn or charr are big and tall, they can stand at the bottom of a hill unseen, zoom all the way out and still see over it. Jm.
You can find me in PvP | I normally answer PMs
I seem to confuse people more on my Norn mesmer than I ever did on my Asura mesmer.

This is why Norns, are the best. Go norn or go home.

Also, you’re another “big sexy” … and your illusions not only cover you but your allies as well …

This image should be all the reason you need to be a Norn mesmer:

This is easy.
Its all about the /laugh. Charr male is a strong contender, but so is Norn female.
No race can ever compete with the fast and dynamic feeling of playing an asura ^^

You ever saw an asura /laughing? ^^ Don’t know if males are any different but my female asura is literally rofl’ing.

Asura animations are by far the BEST out of any race in this entire game and if /laugh doesn’t get you /threaten will… HILARIOUS… They are like a little Rocky Balboa… Everyone else just slits their throat or roars. LAMEEE
humans are far more superior than asura in terms of racial skills, and armor sexiness. not sure why you would want charr though.
Humans may have better racial elites (well…every race got better racial elites than asura) but the Mesmer elites are good enough so you won’t need them.
However, I must admit that http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Prayer_to_Kormir could be useful for dealing with conditions.

What do people’s eyes get drawn to? Big things. As a Norn mesmer, you are that big thing. Your 3 illusions are as well. They do a great job of overwhelming people’s screens.
Take a look at a video of someone fighting a good, big Norn (or Charr) Mesmer and compare it to them fighting a good Asura Mesmer. The fight against the Norn (or Charr) has their screen full of giant illusions.
As far as the “small animations” of an Asura, I’ve found that the animations people notice (magic bullet, summoning iBerserker, etc.) are all very obvious even if you’re an Asura. However, to compensate for the Asura being so small, a good number of their animations are exaggerated movements. I find this makes them easier to spot amongst their clones.
Before switching from my Asura Mesmer to my Norn Mesmer, I played around in sPvP a good bit on both and polled people about which one they thought was harder to kill. I went into it thinking it’d probably be no difference or favor the Asura (hence why my original Mesmer was an Asura) but the feedback I was getting was overwhelmingly in favor of the Norn being harder to fight against. The big illusions make a bigger difference than you can imagine.
Test it out in sPvP yourself though if you want to be really sure :-)

just get a sylvari, you can give them great colors and make them hard to distinguish from phantasms!!!!
Seriously, tho, get what you like.
Charr animations are easy to spot tho because they lean forward heavily. Every slight turn, they take can be spotted. Makes them easier to fight.

If you’re going to take the “color suggestion” into consideration, do please realize that that will only affect PvE and sPvP. It will not affect WvW.

I would personally go Charr, they look bad kitten when you finally get the right gear, my Asura Mesmer is 80 and while i love him and all the animations there is something about playing a big ol’ charr that is infinitely better mainly beacuse of the size of the weapons + gear.
any good player can distinguish clones from the original, any slight movement or animation gives them away so race really doesn’t make much difference imo.

I agree that size is wonderful when it comes to enjoying your gear. In a game where the end-game is about aesthetics, it only makes sense to me to be big enough to actually see your gear (without squinting).

I agree that a good player can distinguish clones from the mesmer as soon as the mesmer moves. However, I still believe larger clones are more confusing than smaller clones when it comes to fighting with allies. Norn/Charr clones impede vision of everyone. Other clones only impede vision of same size or smaller races.

Guys, can we pls stop with all the size matters and “who has the biggest” talk?
It’s not about the size but how you use it!

They have their pros and cons. Asura is way better at navigating jumps but it’s hard to see armor and weapons on them. Charr look better IMO, and the weapons and armor show up better but falling in the colossus fractal is hell on my biggest body size and build charr. I think it’s easier to see large models dodge roll to spot the real mesmer but maybe that’s just me. If you are into the cosmetics of armor and weapons go charr, if you want to be more maneuverable go asura.
Never underestimate an engineer with a wrench
Exploding illusions FTW
Out of those two choices, Asura. It’s all about their over-the-top personalities and emotes. These are traits that mesh well with Mesmers being rather theatrical,
themselves. Not to mention, Asura deal in magitech/mind interfacing as is. Snaff, anyone?
(NOTE: I went Sylvari, personally. Hello, bioluminescence?)
Other 80s: Any but Warrior

Sylvari, cause they glow in the dark!
edit: every single racial they have is utter rubbish tho.
The tier 3 Asuran cultural armor was what settled it for me. Along with animations and the race in general. I now have 3 lvl 80 Asura, and they’re just hilarious!
But if you want to surprise people, go for a Charr Mesmer. A pink charr with butterfly effects on it. Rolling on floor ^^,
Asurans are fun but I myself can’t play one. While their story, everything they shout and being able to hide behind the big guys is nice, I learned long ago that GW2 is a male version of a dress-up game. I don’t like having to zoom in to see the details of what an Asura is wearing. If I ever get a legendary weapon, I wouldn’t want it to be unrecognizable.

This is the primary reason I retired my Asura Mesmer (was my main since beta/release).
As to the comment on dodge rolls … I find the Asura’s “yoda flip” to be quite easy to see as you are somewhat jumping which isn’t obscured very well by your short illusions. Rolling on the ground when you have giant illusions is less noticeable.
Again, though, personal preference … best advice is to make some level 2 mesmers of the races you’re interested in and play around in sPvP.
If you’re looking for racial skills, you need to look at if you’d actually use any of them. I will admit that Norn’s racials are probably the worst for Mesmer, but I don’t really use racials as the Mesmer class skills are great.

I completely agree Sebrent, on everything and that phot about ’’size’’ you posted genuinely made me and my colleagues at work chuckle.
i am also on the verge of retiring my Aura mesmer like you said the yoda flip is cool but i do find it easy to spot an asura over any other race because there animations are all awesome and do say ‘’look at me!’’
well i say retiring Asura Mesmer….only the Asura bit is true mesmer is just brilliant will never put it down
thing is i like the 80 game play…. having to get up there again is frustraiting but i WILL do it! haha.
anyway i still Vote charr, a big drawling beast is scarier than a muscular steroid snow obsessed norn …..(joking ofcourse!)
Pffft … my Norn is a giant metrosexual :-p
I’ve made sure to keep with that. Any visual changes to my Norn are done by my wife created the avatar for me and selects the dyes for each of my many sets of gear (each with a diff skin).

haha you know what thats a great idea im going to get my fiance’ to do my armor dyes tonight :P
But charr are infinitely cooler.
I originally made a very fierce looking male charr mesmer but then noticed how white female charr’s floppy tails seem to make enemies so angry like its taunting them as if you were wacking them across the face with that floppy white tail. I bought one of those changeover kits and made the switch with no regrets. Its just so much kitten.

eeeeew! So that cute kitty with the fluffy tail was a male once?
Sick kitten, don’t get too close to my cubs!
:D

I would go with asura over charr… harder to see their animations in PvP which can make them harder to predict when summoning phantasms. You also get targeted less as an asura since you are naturally a bit less visible.
Asura animations when outside of PvP are superior (other than with the GS beam) and JP’s are easier since you can see around yourself… and the camera doesn’t start spazzing out as if your character is having a seizure.
Being small has some good advantages.
Clothes don’t look as good on an asura imo… I haven’t plaid a light armored asura but at least the heavy armors give you fewer color boxes and thus less options as to how you can appear.
Charr have some interesting lore and are furry… which is a plus to some… you know who your are…
Racial skills don’t matter much as you’ll probably be using class ones over those anyways.
Personally I went human just for the awesome t3 dress and the hot pixel action on my screen though… :P
