The color and butterflies and other things have to do with chaos and the mesmer class… It is somewhere here in the forum… Understand the meaning behind it and you won’t be so cynical of it.

Really? It’s not like we have the same thing in other classes. When I see blue, it is the guardian. No matter what skill or attack it is, it is blue for the guardian. I would say the same goes with the necro, but they do have some black and red lol, but the action bar is all green. There are several classes that specialize in one color, just so happens for the mesmer it’s purple.

Part of why I love Mesmer is because of the purple. I LOVE purple. I hope they add more shades of purple hair in the future! PURPLE!

Purple is [generally] a color of royalty and butterflies are a symbol of chaos (relative to the chaos theory, think the butterfly effect).

Mesmers in gw2 are generally upper class (poise and elegance is not typically found in the lower class) and manipulate chaos.

Simple layman summary of the longer post regarding what they meant.

I love purple and fuchsia-that said, the original colors of the Memer ARE green, believe it or not. Check out GW1. It just so happens that Mesmer’s SKILLS themselves were purple, (even on GW1) and as a byproduct, now most people seem to believe Mesmers are “meant” to look purplish.

I do like the purple scheme with the right dyes and skins. I wear purple in real life-it’s an really awesome color, and have nothing against purple wearing Mesmers, despite their “Green Honet”-like beginnings.

In guild wars 1, they were more bardish which is why they were green. Bards are typically related to forests and greenery, they also wore green/brown as they weren’t quite royalty.

In guild wars 2, they are more royalty and have strayed from their bardic roots. They still retain some of their bardic roots, but it’s not as obvious.

Mesmers are purple because of Lyssa.

And mesmers were never bards, in any way. Paragons were the bards, mesmers were more like enchantresses and the like. Mesmers that you met throughout GW1 were also more royal or prestigious, such as your tutor in Prophecies. Most of the spells a mesmer cast, if not all, had a purple effect to them. It all goes back to Lyssa being the patron goddess of the mesmers.

The color doesn’t bother me at all. I just think of it as power from the mists since all the mist themed weapons are like a purple smoke.

I do however dislike the butterflies. If someone was really trying to fight for their life and they casted a spell that made butterflies flutter around it would be pathetic and comical.

Mesmers were/are a bardic theatrical class strongly associated with Lyssa. In GW1 they formed theatrical troupes and hung around places like Althea’s Actors Stage & Foible’s Fair. Norgu was a member of Lyssa’s Fools, a travelling group of actors in Vabbi. Much like with theatre, with mesmers it’s all about illusion, misdirection, glamour and deceptive appearances.

That’s actually not a bad choice. I’ve seen a trend of mesmers picking up Charr and then dressing like the Warband Support. That’s up to 6 similarly looking Charrs running together. Confuses people in WvW a bit (though the ranged guy uses a rifle), and not a bad elite choice. I find Timewarp is most effective in portal bombing, so if you’re not doing that, then the warband is a good pick. I usually run with Mass Invis since I don’t have other stealth skills equipped.

Also, I’ve never been picked on, and I wear feathered gear in bright colors. My sig reads Giant and Fabulous for good reason. Haha.

I played a mesmer in GW1, and in GW2 I still wear the traditional green, with the legacy appearance from the Hall of Monuments.

I noticed that mersmers purple color… uhm… drags more attention than other professions colors. If i see guardian with red colored armor or ranger with blue colored armor i absolutely dont care about it. But when i see mesmer whose attire is not purple (or at least color that good combines with purple) i feel that something wrong. Maybe, because mesmers’ spells have very very bright and noticable effects, i perceive them not as something temporary, but as part of mesmer’s permanent appereance.

Only if the attempt fails, and then anything would look comical and pathetic, because it failed.

On the other hand, if it is successful it either results in 1) the user being viewed as one unencumbered with hangups that hinder victory or 2) the subject being viewed as pathetic and comical for being defeated by such a tactic or 3) both.

Since Mesmers make a strong showing in all fields of game play, people don’t tend to give anyone flack over the purple butterflies, and they are viewed as kind of awesome. . .however, if Mesmers ever became a second rate class, then that would become low hanging fruit for taunts.

Old picture of my Asura: https://i.minus.com/iFUTjnQ8tA61U.jpg

The haircolour turned black/red since then, the facemask is gone (replaced with the Trickster Visage from Necros), but the armour stayed the same except for the gloves, and so did the colour scheme.

I really like this Purple with Green and Orange accents. It gives a very nice playful look with all the feathers and open parts. I’m laughing while being unhittable!

Actually purple works well and here’s why.. In the world of Tyria purple is the color used in many magical locations. The portals and severely magic scarred areas are colored purple which indicates the essence of magic is colored with a purple hue. Chaos magic channels that power and has a similar color.

I now run an armor entirely made of gold, iron and greenish hue, after my partner gifted me the auric glider. It looks surprisingly cool on a Mesmer because it provides a nice but lavish contrast to the purple/pink in the spell effects.

Should really have taken pictures before heading to work… :<

If the reason for your rejection of purple/pink is a lack of confidence in your masculinity (I assume because it is common but could be wrong), interesting historical fact. Historically, in many countries, blue was a woman color and pink/red was a man color. The reason is that blue was associated with softness while red and pink were “blood colors”.

So forget about gender role and play this awesome class.
