Mesmer sPVP Woes
Well for one thing, you are using the wrong weapons. Sword/pistol is a power/precision weapon, staff is a condition weapon. They need different traits and stats to be effective, so they dont mix that well. Dont get me wrong, you can make it work, but its not optimal. With a power build id use GS instead. Also, unless you also specced precision I would consider changing the offhand for a sword (pistol better for precision but sword phantasm does more damage).
Mesmer is not about dealing damage as much as it is about surviving. Let your phantasms take care of the damage part, what you want to focus on is avoiding damage. Phantasmal Defender is a must.
If you want to tell us more details on what class/situations you are having trouble with I would be able to give you actual advice instead of this generic stuff hehe.
Staff + Sword/Pistol works with Rampager stats spread (prec/condd/power) or Rabid.
That aside, player needs more practice in sPvP.
Half of sPvP is knowing exactly how the enemy builds / abilities all work so you can avoid getting trucked and to identify how the enemies are vulnerable.
Staff/sword+pistol.
10/20/0/25/0 +15.
Imo you can put those last 15 points basically anywhere and come up with an effective build. Just make sure you are spamming your phantasms on priority targets, dodging a LOT and making full use of combo fields for extra confusion stacks/chaos armors. Runes are ogre, pretty much the best power rune in the game bar none, berserker amulet, sigil of flame. Utilities are signet of illusions and decoy. Play around with it, once you get used to it properly you can 1v2 bad players pretty comfortably and it’s almost impossible to lose a 1v1 against someone who doesn’t instigib you.
Well, if we’re talking about revelations in mesmer pvp, it would have to be the value of field-wide pull/knockdown with Into The Void, the versatility of the Feedback bubble, and the value of Deceptive Evasion. These are the tools that make me feel invaluable in spvp, and pretty much define my playstyle.
dont listen to any of these nerds.
staff with sword/pistol
you’ll never die with the staff out, youre enemies will die with the sword/pistol out.
stack phatasm damage. stack stun break utilities. keep your endurance low, blend with your illusions.
its not hard bro
For all the mesmer’s problems, the class is really good in spvp. In 1v1 I don’t die to any other class but mesmers who use moa. The class is easily one of the better pvp classes.
If you wanna see what sucking in spvp feels like roll an engineer.
there are so many different ways to play mesmer. I’ve literally changed traits and gear about 40 times to finally get something I feel suits my playstyle just right. Experiment, try new builds, new weps, new runes, new sigils, etc.
And everyone above me is right. No one is wrong because there are many different ways to play mesmer. Everyone’s playstyle is their own and they make it work for them.
If you feel like you just can’t make it work then try another class.
I know this will sound odd, but Staff/2hd sword is boss in sPvP. With that combo I have trouble with theives (always forget to moa when they unstealth on me), but other then that I feel virutally unkillable, destroy most 1v1, and add alot to the team when the enemy is grouped in mass.
My Mesmer uses the Staff and Sword/Pistol combo and i dont really have that much issue with it,
My Talent set is : 0/20/15/25/10
I use Phantasmal Fury, Deceptive Evasion, Illusionary Defense, Compounding Celerity, Persisting Images and Compounding Power
Utility Skills are Ether Feast, Signet of Illusions, Mirror Images, Feedback and Moa Morph
Works fine for me, dont really have THAT many issues i win some i lose some, i can be a pain which is always great fun – i tend to not use the Shatter abilities unless its too Confuse or distortion as Daze is pretty work and not worth losing all that dps/conditions
Go Greatsword and never go back.

Oh my god, these forums are filled with nothing but whining and bad advice. Do yourself a favor and go watch some streams. There are some streamers that answer questions and give some nice advice. Of course, don’t put a ton of stock in what they say, but I certainly would trust them more than what I see here.
I can tell you one thing that has helped me a lot: play every class. You learn a crap load by doing that and at the same time you slowly learn the mechanics of the game as you begin to grasp how every class fits into the game. I’ve even played, deleted, and gone back to some classes (mesmer in particular) and have a completely new perspective now that I’ve learned more.
My guess is you just suck right now. Don’t feel bad. We all did at some point. When I look at my understanding of the game in the BWEs, I realize how idiotic some of my beliefs were.
Go Greatsword and never go back.
Only in PvE.
GS is fine for PvP.
Mesmer PvP is about knowing the enemy abilities and capabilities.

You couldn’t be more wrong about staffs. Staff is a hybrid weapon. It can fit the power, condition, and tanky builds very well. I run a power/percision/toughness build and use a staff. It hits like a truck. A lot harder than off-hand sword or pistol. I recommend the staff/GS. The GS has a push back that can save countless stomps on friends and the iBerserker can be cast behind walls. It’s a very useful weapon. Sword/pistol or Sword/sword can be used effectively as well. I just hate how the iLeap works right now. It’s not worth using in PvP if it’s still wonky.
