Not sure if this has been addressed but the search feature for the forum didn’t help. If you Target (Ctrl+T) a Mezmer their clones will never deceive you…. That is all.

Unless that mesmer turns invisible which clears it.

Currently with torch alone, you can turn invisible for 3 seconds on a 4 second cool down (by interrupting your own “The Prestige” when it’s almost reached its end).

Activate the prestige
You turn invisible and start “casting” for 3 seconds
When the cast bar is 99% complete, use ability 1 to interrupt it
Prestige goes on it’s short “I was interrupted” 4 second cool down instead of 30 seconds. If you interrupt late enough, you even get the explosion + only a 4 second CD.

Bug, yes I assume, but I don’t think you should be able to target lock a mesmer with such an easy button click either.

Nice… so the clones thing is pointless

Even if people exploit this a good mesmer will always deceive you. But I don’t even think that, (Crtl. T) is effective.

So… ctrl+T… supposed to put a marker over you targets head, yes? Does it only work in PvP or if you’re grouped? I was trying to use it last night on some mobs and it wasn’t popping up. I’m a big fan of marked targets from throughout my MMO career and most recently tanks but either this isn’t working or just not the way I’d expect.

I used the “interrupting Prestige trick” myself but I knew it was a cheap trick. Glad they fixed that yesterday. However it makes it more difficult to counter this weak abuse of the marking system which kittens Mesmers. The whole point of a mesmer (and the fun found in playing the class) comes from our ability to confuse other players:

“Mesmers are magical duelists who wield deception as a weapon. Using powerful illusions, clones, and phantasmal magic to confuse and distract their foes, mesmers make sure every fight is balanced in their favor and their opponents can’t believe their eyes.” The description found on the Gw2 site.

Yet with a big mark on our heads no matter how many clones we create everyone knows exactly who to hit. I find it would be appropreate if markers weren’t only removed when we go invisible (which I’ve never actually tested and anyhow not every mesmer will have a claoking skill) but also when we create a clone. It should be up to our opponents to observe and decide which clone to hit. Otherwise there’s clearly nothing “confusing or distracting” about our profession.

nice how you explained it 3h ago, while the new patch notes are up for quite a while. Prestige is fixed now.

Clones are not meant for PVP deceiving. Unless they get a complete rework.
They’re meant to deceive PvE or cause conditions.

Orly? Then why is it that more than half of the time the mobs will just ignore clones and go directly after me instead of my clones even if the clone is placed between me and the mob? The only time I can reliably force mobs to switch on clones is when I use decoy (which is on a 30 something second cooldown).

Clones fool mobs less than 30% of the time for me, and they go down in what, 1 to 2 hits?

Clones are perfectly viable for sowing confusion, even for a second or two to turn a fight to your advantage.

In one instance, I was nearly down in a duel with another mesmer, and I decoyed and dodged out of a chaos storm just before I would have gone down. The other mesmer assumed I had gone down and deceptioned out went to work on my remaining phantasms for a few seconds waiting for me to reappear. This lapse in his offensive turned the momentum of the duel around and I was able to win.

Another case occured when I was defending a point and an enemy mesmer was assaulting. Instead of launching an immediate offensive, the enemy mesmer popped out three clones and stood stock still among them, peppering me with conditions. It was only for a few seconds, but that was all he needed to start the fight off at an advantage and I went down after blowing the wrong cooldowns at the wrong time.

It would definitely be great if regular clones cleared targeting – or if the real mesmer didn’t have a giant red arrow above their head when downed.
