Mimic CD to long?
It really only sees use in gimmicks. For actual combat the CD is indeed too long.
Should be 60s at most to see any combat use, although 75s is acceptable with MoM.
It lets you double cast any Utility Skill. 72 seconds with Trait is fine.

Apart from very specific situations such as reflects, stealth and portals, Mimic is rarely a good idea. CD is far too long for use in general combat.
90 is insane yes. I would be happy for a 60 sec cd ofc, since it’s 30 less seconds. But it’s still not balanced. Why should mimic always have the same CD? Does mimic deserve the same CD for mimicing a portal and an idefender? Where does that make sense?
Why not give mimic the same CD as the skill you used it on? Or maybe a modifier like 1.5x CD of mimed skill. Probably would make more sense.
Also it would be nice if mantras wouldn’t screw mimic up :P

Like everyone else is saying, it really should have a 60-75s base CD..
But I’m just happy we have it at all.
I use mimic with feedback bubble when vet karka farming both soloing and in zerg. I agree that the mimic duration is a bit too long.
I’d like to see a dynamic CD for this skill, since the effectiveness is 100% dependant on the skill you’re copying. Something like 120-150% of the copied skills’ CD.
I don’t know how possible it is, but mimic taking the same CD (or a multiplier) as the skill you mimic could be nice. However, since we currently use it before the skill, it would be weird. Maybe it should be the opposite: activate it after a skill reduces the cooldown of the skill to 1s and mimic starts to recharge with the cooldown of the skill it mimic-ed.
I think the theory — similar to the theory behind Chronoshift — is that casting a skill twice in rapid succession is situationally much stronger than having a second utility available. In a lot of situations, Mimic isn’t doing anything for us, but in certain specific situations (chaining Feedback against a projectile-spamming boss is one of the more obvious ones) it’s the most powerful non-Elite skill we have.
So the power of Mimic isn’t related so much to the inherent power or cooldown of the skill it’s copying as much as it’s related to the situation you’re using Mimic in. An algorithm just can’t account for that, so the CD of Mimic is ultimately based on ascenario that aligns with the following assumptions:
- You have an ability worth mimicing
- You’re in a situation where mimicing that ability makes sense
- Mimicing that ability is more useful than having some other ability on your bar
90s is actually pretty reasonable when viewed that way, it’s just those assumptions aren’t necessarily always met — particularly the third one. Lowering the CD wouldn’t actually make Mimic more popular, it would just make Mimic stronger in the rare situations where it’s already really strong.
Tanya Larina – Human Thief
Finchy Whyte – Sylvari Ranger
The other thing is if it’s to work with our instant-cast skills it really shouldn’t have a cast time.
But in general I think it would be more useful if it was activated after the skill you want double-casted rather than before. Combat situations where double cast would be useful tend to be unpredictable.

You do make a valid point.
But let look at it in a PvP stand, mesmer all really have hard time in a spvp environment and even in pve. We rely too much on our illusion which die far too easy. With mimic this could help our dps.
The only problem now is if you add chrono plus mimic the bust shatter can be seriously op.

With one exception, I think you mean 2nd most powerful non-elite skill.
The skill you’re mimicing is exactly as powerful, with a lower cooldown (Except Illusion of Life)
You people are talking as if mimic feedback is all that great when Guardian’s Wall of Reflection traited last as long as two back to back Feedbacks with mimic.

I prefer to trait feedback thank you very much. It’s also much more reliable than a wall will ever be.

Yeah ok lol. PvP guy talking obviously.

Feedback isn’t really used in PvP.

A PvE guy would not be calling Wall of Reflection unreliable. It’s unbelievably dumb considering it’s used with the same effectiveness as feedback, except better because YOU place it as opposed to its position being tied relative to the mob.
Feedback is used in WvW. To me WvW qualifies as PvP. There’s a reason I said PvP guy and not sPvP.
