It is a pretty drastic change— It’s quite hard to see now.

Could we at least have the spherical shape back, please? The egg shape is a bit odd and I’m constantly clipping through it.

Stupid egg I hate it.. I used to just pop chaos armor over and over and especially group just because it looked cool while chatting and messing around.. Now it just looks stupid and makes me sad.

why did they do this? can’t they add an option to make our own computer to display this?, or an option, for ppl to disable if it annoys them.

According to Colin, you’re killing SPvP if you’re against the visual changes.

The only reason they keep doing this is because they went way too far with the visual noise introduced by elite specs in HoT. When the first beta weekend came around everyone commented on how over-the-top the effects were for nearly every skill. This was part of the appeal for elite specs and no doubt contributed to the sales of HoT. That is why it is so disappointing that they keep gutting the product that we bought with these ‘QoL’ changes. A visual noise sliding/toggle filter is the only appropriate solution to this deliberate deception.

Ugh, this is the worst thing that has happened to mesmer since iLeap was gutted.

I don’t need to “see” my chaos armor…I know when it’s gonna be active. I didn’t even notice a change.

I’m going to make my first post ever on these forums because I feel very strongly about this issue.

I’ve played guild wars 2 off an on since about launch. I’m a pretty casual player, my only 80 is a Mesmer (I rerolled my mesmer about a year ago). Mesmer has been my favorite class with a fantastic visual aesthetic. I enjoy the other classes as well, I’m a bit of a serial alt maker, but none of them have clicked the way Mesmer has. I love being the flashy mage who draws the attention of the enemy but is constantly eluding him. The brightness of the animations and visuals are essential to what the Mesmer is.

I felt chaos armor was one of the quintessential skills that established the visual aesthetic of my Mesmer. Being a support mesmer and watching blast finishers come down in a chaos field and spread chaos armor around was one of those moments in game that always made me grin.

I logged into guild wars 2 today to see the change to chaos armor and I am crestfallen. I know the developer who worked on the animation must have spent alot of time on it and I appreciate that immensely, but unfortunately to me it breaks badly from the visual theme of the class.

The egg shape clashes with the circular and spherical design choices for all the wells, feedback, null field, and time warp. The egg shape also brings up farmyard and breakfast connotations in my mind that are extremely immersion breaking. I don’t know about you but when I think about a flashy mage the first terms that come to mind are not ‘chicken coop’ and ‘scrambled eggs.’ Most importantly the flashy nature of the skill is gone. I will no longer will have that ‘wow’ visual moment that tells me I made a difference to my team when a blast finisher spreads chaos armor.

Now can I keep playing the mesmer with chaos armor the same way with the new animations, absolutely. Can I learn to watch for it on my buff bar instead of looking at visual que’s, no problem. However the skill won’t feel the same. The visual aesthetic of the skill is weakened and with that, the whole class’s aesthetic is weakened.

I understand the importance of decreasing visual noise. I have definitely been frustrated in more that a couple instances by not being able to see what was going on with boss animations. However I am really puzzled at how this change will help. The main area I have had problems with visual noise is in melee range.

I may be considered a ‘noob’ but I don’t see this skill often in use in melee. I always found getting out of range of a boss, especially when using my staff, the primary way of decreasing damage taken. Chaos armor was always secondary as a way to passively respond to the damage if damage was inevitable even at range. Every once in a while I would be able to spread chaos armor to the melee group but that was hardly often, and I don’t see many other mesmers actively doing it either.

TLDR

In closing, I really hope they reverse this change. Although the change was instigated as a way to decrease visual noise, I don’t believe it had much of any effect on visual noise and instead hurt the visual aesthetic and design of the mesmer class.

For me when I start playing mesmer i just love the chaos armor animation, it looked so epic and awesome.
Now it looks odd and so awful, just like an designcircle webdesigners use , but they forgot the effects.
So disappointing!

Personally I like it but it has been toned down too much, it needs to be more distinguishable that you 1. Have an aura and 2. It is in fact chaos armour.

Right now most of the auras look very similar with a small differentiation at the feet which is not easy to see. Yes they needed toning down but this is too much as you can’t reliably see what auras are present.

But.. that’s what sold HoT to me.

I’m serious. I got into beta, cast a few wells, fell in love. Used a Tempest, for once I was hyped for Eles because those overload effects looked amazing.

Why nerf the positive parts of these elite specs?

Killing sPvP doesn’t sound so bad right now. Seriously, it’s getting to the point where I’m beginning to resent PvP and actively avoiding it. Anet’s fixation on it is becoming detrimental to the rest of the game.

Yeah, but it’s difficult to notice on the fly, in the heat of battle for your opponents. Being able to clearly see auras was a good thing.

In any case, the way my mesmer holds the staff, its almost leaning halfway outside of the egg shape a lot of the time…they should at least make the bubble spherical again.

How can it be ugly if it’s barely visible? lol? Anyways I didn’t even notice the change until I read this thread. I guess I don’t really care about the visual effects

I am very, very unhappy with this change. Please ANet, revert this! There was nothing wrong with chaos armor! I can’t even see it now! I cry every time my mesmer has to use that skill. Being the classiest and flashiest of mages, being given such awful animation. I will never get used to it, I’d rather quit playing than see my main in an almost-visible egg thing.

Auras just look so bad now and it’s so difficult to see them on targets which was a fundamental part of their counterplay. This change made the game look worse whilst also making it less fun to play. Love it!

While I personally don’t mind Chaos Armor so much, but I really would like to see Shocking Aura and Magnetic Aura to be more visible again.
Not having proper visuals on those auras is a big factor in fights…
