I have tried running several of the published “shatter” builds. I’m finding that while I can kill target golems well enough, I’m not doing significant damage in actual play.

Will someone review the basic tactic? Should I be shattering as often as possible? Why can’t I dent warriors?

Also, I hear fantastic damage numbers but the numbers on my log for any of the published builds run an average of about 150. Why is this?

Mesmer is my favorite class but I’m getting my * handed to me in PvP and WvW just about every time, regardless of my ascended gear.

Have you read Supcutie’s PvP Shatter Guide?

You should look shatter as burst (We are talking about DPS here) and not as constant damage. Your phantasms and weapon skills are you constant damages. Leave your phantasm do your work a little first and time your shatter to hit (Do a rotation)

You can’t dent warriors (or any other classes) because maybe they have their buff on or boons.

I don’t get your average 150 damage number…?

Shatter takes a more time to master, because you’re wide open without your clones. Most will go heavy in Dueling, which makes you more glass.

I have read the guide, will read it again. Do shatters “miss”? If so,how can I avoid this or target better? Also, how can I keep my auto target from shifting from one enemy to another?

Are you using Exotic Gear?
Secondly, try to land your shatters when your target is disabled. Using Sword/Pistol is great in this scenario, because of the Immobilize on Sword #3 and the Stun on Pistol #5, which can be both used to set up reliable shatters.
Playing Shatter Mesmer is really hard, because if you miss your burst you will lose a lot of time waiting. So, in order not to miss your burst, you must set it up. And since setting it up is almost as important as bursting, you must not miss your set up too!

Most people will not dodge twice in a row. So my best suggestion would be: let your opponent dodge, then use your set up skill→shatter. Bad players have the habit of dodging “just because”, so it’s really easy to take advantage of this if you don’t use your skills randomly.

Dodge clones will zone in on whatever enemy is closest. Clones that were spawned via a targeted ability (mirror images, staff #2, etc) will hone in on their target they spawned on.
