Im playing my mesmer from the start, but i was mostly doing pve content, but since i got over most of it, i have been trieing wvw/pvp for past few weeks.
Im playing a condition(confusion) mesmer atm, tried some other specs but i cant immagine playing w/o investing in toughness, and thats only besauce of thiefs.

So, im asking for some tips how to kill off thiefs (the good ones, not the heartseeker spamming ones) in wvw. even with 1900 toughness, they do ALOT of dmg, but thats not even the problem. In a 20 sec long fight, ill mby have sight of the thief for 4 sec, and he is still able to damage me even if i cant see him. Now i know part of the reason is culling, but there has to be a way to counter it.
And in event he actually takes a bit too much dmg, he can just disengage never to be seen again.

Any tips are welcome, ty.

Thats my problem, either the thief kills me, or he escapes with low health. I just make sure i always have someone nearby in WVW now, its not just the theives that are my main issue, its that when you are alone you are a sitting duck for all the 5-10 man groups that just run around picking loners off and taking supply camps. So really the best advice i can give you, is to try and stay grouped. For now you could always just go shatter spec and DPS race them down, but once thats nerfed it likely wont be a viable choice anymore

I know staying grouped is better, the problem is the 1v1 situations. And shatter spec is u eighter catch them and kill them, or they do the same. The only difference is that any thief no matter how bad can catch u off guard in wvw ;p

A couple tips for what they are worth. I always have a couple toughness vitaly pieces equipped regardless of traits because I dont want to go full glass cannon. Glass cannons are just too easy for thieves. And when traveling by my self or in a very small group I always have my staff out for the added survivability it gives you. And lastly if a thief goes invisible on me after the initial attack I’ll spam my staff #1 to try and flush him out. Many times I’m able to kick a thief out of stealth that way. Once he’s visible I work with whatever my build allows me to do depending on my weapons and traits. But I always rely on the staff to keep me alive until I can make an opportunity to attack. Also what your clones they will point to the last direction of the thief if he turns invisible. They will also point the way to the thief if he reappears but usually thats near you. And use portal to create kiting room when fighting a thief. That and blink are your tools for trying to kite a thief.

I’m not an exceptional Mesmer, but here are some tips I’ve taught myself:

1. While in stealth, we cannot target the Thief and thus cannot generate clones. In WvW, you can still target other targets, such as critters, wildlife, NPC guards or other enemies. Clone generation is important to execute Diversion or Distortion.

2. If you use Greatswords and the Thief goes into stealth, count to two, make a quick turn (aka stop keyboard turning!) and fire Illusionary Wave. More often than not, you will catch the Thief just before she Backstabs you.

3. The Sceptre’s Illusionary Counter and off-hand Sword’s Illusionary Riposte, if timed right, will block the Thief’s opener and generate a clone. I’m still not sure if blocking Cloak and Dagger will still allow the Thief to go back into Stealth, though.

4. Otherwise, unless Shadow Refuge was used, you could go into Stealth too! kittenololol

Are there any settings that let u see the thief faster when he gets out of stealth?
Cuz it unstealth> he hits me for about sec and a half>i actually see him>puff stealth again and repeat..

Not that I know about but I hear what your saying. I dont pretend to understand everything about the problems with thief stealth. They refer to issues with culling so that graphically we dont see the thief appear on our screen even though he’s not really stealthed. Yet the end result ends up being comical as you try to pvp vs. someone you never see long enough to attack. A skilled thief can exploit invisibility right up to where your downed and then they drop refuge on top of you as they stomp you so you never even see them when you die.

I think the disappearing and reappearing could be either heartseeker spam or I think maybe they have another skill that does something similar where all they have to do is hit an enemy and it grants them stealth for 3 seconds so they do it over and over. And thieves get rediculous mobility so dont bother trying to run from a thief. Its best to switch to your staff.

And 1 last tip, something you can try for yourself. If a thief opens on you and you have your staff out you can use staff #2 and mirror images for an immediately shatter. If you have runes of air and get a nice proc you might actually down a glass cannon thief right away. If not spam staff #1 to try and flush him out. If you do drop chaos storm on him.

Pets, such as the Ranger’s pet, Engineer’s turrets, Mesmer’s illusions, Necromancer’s minions, Elementalist’s elementals and Guardian’s Spirit Weapons will detect and attack Thieves/Mesmers coming out of stealth without worrying about culling.
