New Mimic. Will you run it?
You could argue we already have boon stripping so no need for the new mimic.
I actually do argue that.
It seems that every new trait/skill in this game has to be buffed several times before being actually desirable. The new Mimic is just so boring, uninspired and unnecessary since there’s Arcane Thievery.
I seriously hope that Karl takes a good look at this, but no way they will change it again before the patch hits. Meh.
Wasn’t there a suggestion thread (or several) concerning Mimic a while ago?

The idea of the change isn’t even that bad but it lacks some things. Copying boons every 30 seconds from 1 enemy is just not satisfying enough. I would almost rather say that this skill should be replaced with chaos armor on 4 staff because of its low potential as utility skill and its high potential to bring staff on a level so it will be used a lot more outside spamming phase retreat and chaos storm. Mesmer lacks good weapon skills, this could be the chance to change that, especially with such lacklustre skill like chaos armour.
As utility skill it should be buffed to what I already previously mentioned; lower cd, stealing instead of copying or being able to share the copied boons.
If they remain as it is now then signet of inspiration drastically needs a buff in cool down to at least 30 seconds.
It should be a duration skill so it actually feels a bit more distinct to Arcane Thievery. So maybe for 6 seconds you get a copy of any boon that your target had on activation of Mimic and also any boon your target receives for the duration of Mimic. Your target is visibly marked to provide some counterplay to this. If you might stack whilst marked, you might stack for the enemy Mesmer too. If you steal from a Mesmer that marked you and consume plasma whilst marked, you give the Mesmer all those boons too.
Mesmer v Mesmer:
Mesmer uses Mimic.
Mesmer uses Mimic.
Mesmer gains boon.
Boon gets applied infinitely to both parties.
Instant infinite boons?

Uhh…. I’d love that. Probably never going to happen, though.

The thing is that ANet can’t make most those changes. They probably could lower the cooldown but will it make the skill more desirable? It will also remain a extremly and uninspired re-design. It can’t steal boons because it would literally be the same like Arcane Thievery. They can’t make it share boons because it would basically become Arcane Thievery + Signet of Inspiration within one skill. That is also reason why I personally prefer Mimic staying a defensive skill with some offensive reaction to it.
Of course, people like Kodesh are right. That is not really ‘mimic-ing’ anything. The problem is that there is not a lot in this game which could be mimicced. Health? Not going to happen because of the troll potential. Mana? There is none. Endurance? Can’t really be observed. Boons? We already got that. Skills? This would have be interesting but quite obviously doesn’t work out with the current design of Mimic.
If Mimic was supposed to mimic anything specific about an enemy I would be all for making it work like Steal for Thieves (without the shadowstep quite obviously). This would be something which ANet could easily accomplish and implement. It would also add new option to the class. However, I’m pretty sure Thieves won’t be happy even if the cooldown was higher and if it didn’t have a shadowstep.
Yes.. Guess u re in gvg in wvw or in os, as periphery huntering by yourzerg with small scaleing.. When u used yourveil use this to others melee who has long duration buffs, it sounds nice.. However sacrifice decoy..? I think still nice..

I’d love it to be the beta version of the active Signet of Inspiration which made you copy all the boons from allies around you. Was pretty strong I guess, but was it OP?

You know I could almost think of mini-game like the Asura ball (which is guardian knocking asura for soccer match if you’re interested):
Each team has a ranger (who has rune of centaur and 6 trait into nature magic for 24s of swiftness) and a mesmer (who equipped signet of inspiration, arcane thievery and mimic). The ranger in each team start with Call of the Wild. Then mesmers have to utilize all 3 skill to increase swiftness. Whoever gets to 1 min 30 sec of swiftness first wins.
Anyone?
nvm I’ll show myself out lol.
Will it have second phase “use” skill? i.e. you “copy” the boons into the skill and then chose within cooldown time when you apply copied boons.
Also turning mimic into thief’s “steal” equivalent would be nice
My take on Mimic (I knew this would never happen but just want to throw it out there).
Mimic: copy the boon state of target (you dont get the boons right away). Activate Echo (Echo will expire after 60s or when u get downed). Cast time: 0.3s * number of boons on target. CD: 30s
Echo: apply the previously copied state to yourself and enemy target. Instant cast.
This would allow many creative uses of Mimic and Echo. Also, Mimic will distinguish itself from Arcane Thievery as AT takes effect instantly whereas Mimic “stores” for later use.
Apart from the obvious use copying enemy boons for later use, you can use it as a massive boonrip on demand where u use Mimic on target without boons.
Or… give lots of boons to yourself and the enemy then have a necro friend corrupts their boons.

This skill would have been so much fun if it was:
Copy the skill that your target is currently using (have 5-10sec to use). If a weapon skill was copied, your current weapon temporarily changes to that of the skill, until used.
That would be hilarious and useful, I would definitely slot that. But as Mimic stands I still don’t see a reason to slot it over my other go-to utility skills.
Is that 30 sec cooldown traited? I usually go for a strong blink and a 24 second boonstrip would be quite nice.

It is 30 sekittenraited, and 24 sec traited, but it doesn’t strip boons it copies.
You mean:
Mimic: Marks an enemy. The next time marked enemy deals damage with a skill, you gain that skill.
Enemy gets marked. Presses 1 on critter.
Mesmer cries.
Enemy gets marked right at the end of a cast (FGS, anyone?).
Mesmer laughs.
Ohhh, it copies XD didn’t even put that together.. yeah I won’t run this then, I was looking at it like a more offensive Arcane Thievery. Sigh.

No it shouldn’t copy your foe’s skills because that would be problematic and sort of useless at times if they use an auto attack or a signet that has nothing to do with your mechanics.
Instead i think Mimic should work like Echo in Guild Wars 1 in which it copies your next skill you use for 5 or 10 seconds so you can use it twice. Maybe give it a 60 second cool down but i think that would be a lot more useful and desirable especially against heart seeker thieves that try to double backstab/leap or something.
That way you can choose to either heal twice, use chaos storm twice, use crowd control twice. It pretty much could turn any skill you have into a personal mantra. Perhaps they could move it to the elite slot and put Mass Invisibility in utilities? or Time Warp? So you wont be able to double Time Warp lol or Mass Invis or Moa Morph
edit: or make it immune to elites, that works too.
The chance of copying an AA is what the Devs would call balance. But once you know the tale-tale signs of another professions skills you could get something very useful.
I like the idea of using a skill twice, but I don’t think they are going to bring in any GW1 skills. If they were going to do that, they probably would have done that from the start of GW2.
I’d try it of course. But for the moment, I still can’t see why I would choose it over Arcane Thievery or why I would even consider equipping both when there’s other Utility skill combos that would be of more use to me.
My thought process when I read about the change: They encountered bugs with Mimic. They aren’t able to fix these bugs. (I think I remember seeing a video on how a mesmer can use Mimic to create multiple clones of an engineer. Anyone else remember that? Or am I remembering it wrong?) Changing the skill to: ‘copy all boons’ hence ‘mimic’ your enemies! Means they wouldn’t have to check and balance every new projectile attack skill they’ll introduce to the game with Mimic anymore! Because a skill copying boons is already in the game code since release. /endnonsense
sigh
Yesterday, Mimic saved my butt several times in WvW. Getting chased by two thieves, a warrior and a ranger? Pop Mimic and run into tower!
I’m already getting nostalgic.
To be honest, I was actually hoping there would be more… discussion on the skill, since the new Mimic seems (at least for me) like yet another skill that’s not worth taking, ever – well, except for some rare PvE situations maybe. Not enough people seem to be upset about this, it seems?
The “awesome combinations” Karl mentioned in the Skill Bar are pathetic – copy boons with Mimic and then rip them with Nullfield? Great! Or, you know, I could just equip a single utility that does basically the same. Mesmers survival is bound heavily on utility skills (decoy, blink). No way I’ll sacrifice a utility slot for an “awesome combo” that already exists as a single skill.
Ungh, the more I think about Mimic, the more upset I get.
I will miss the old one! and I am not happy about the change
what i hoped will come
- have the old effect from mimic add 2 or more close allies to it and boom! you protect your group members and yourself for about 4 seconds. Means easier to get the block effect/ reflect and not only for you.
- apply might with each attack on you, that you can make awsome echo at the end
- the echo effect becomes a noncasttime effect from the skill not auto (range or close combat) a opponent used on you
- Activating while you still can use your attack skills
