Q:

Well I just got this game for xmas and ive been playing a mesmer so far and it feels super lack luster and weak. I die incredibly easily I dont know if this class is just weak or its me? Right now im using a sword and a pistol. I am level 20 I just died to a pack of level 11 monsters… Does this class get better at end game or what?

This class typically gets better by L40. That’s when I really noticed the difference the first time playing mine. An important thing to remember is to upgrade your gear/weapons. You can slide with some lame trinkets until about L60, but your gear definitely needs to be “current.” I would also hazard to suggest at least wear green armor if you can’t get rares, but try to start getting rare armor by L60. At L80 you will want exotics. If memory serves, you have your off-hand weapon set unlocked, so try to get your hands on a staff or gs. Staff is really good for defensive play and gs tends to better for burst. I leveled up with sword/pistol + gs on my first mesmer then stubbornly leveled a second one with scepter/torch + staff. I ended up carrying a gs in my inventory when I knew I would need more damage.

Something that will really help you in this game is learning the dodge mechanic. =) It was the hardest for me to understand and utilize effectively when I first started. So, try not to face tank anything if you can help it.

Mesmer is without a doubt the most painful class to level. I got the game last year for Christmas and rolled a Mesmer too. It truly takes dedication to level. Good call using sword/pistol. Just keep at it, you’ll start to snowball after a while.

To add, bind dodge to it’s own key if you haven’t done that already.

I’m leveling a third mesmer and I use gs/sword+focus, maybe it’s a difficult combo as a beginner but the focus phantasm and blurred frenzy is very nice.

1. Focus #4 Temporal Curtain x2 to group them
2. Focus #5 Phantasmal Warden
3. Sw#3 Illusionary Leap on a mob
4. Sw#3 Swap into the group
5. Sw#2 Blurred frenzy all over their faces
6. Dodge away!
7. GS#5 Phantasmal Berzerker if they still up
8. GS#3 Mind Stab their faces!

Funnily enough, coming from an action rpg/tps background, dodging was the easiest thing for me. I was playing mass effect 3 multiplayer non stop at the time – anyone who has played that knows that on certain characters you can and should dodge like a maniac, so the only thing that caught me out was endurance and limited dodges.

The hardest thing for me was the camera and tab targeting system – the most recent game I can think of that I played using tab targeting was KotOR 1 and 2 – the single player games years ago, not the mmo…

But having spent most time in recent years with things like the mass effect series, elder scrolls series, and things like dishonoured or deus ex HR, this tab targeting and even worse using right click to move the camera was completely alien to me. Fortunately I quickly found and tweaked a solution to this which allows me to play.

I never used guides for crafting, so I can’t really tell you what is good or not.

These are a few I found in a quick search.

*GW2 Crafts
Guild Wars 2 Hub
Pwniversity Crafting

*This one references a couple of other sites that may also be helpful.

Good luck. =)

you have to understand that you wear the weakest type of armor in the game, which you are using with a melee weapon such as a sword.

you must either learn how to dodge attacks, control your enemies with roots dazes and interupts, and use your sword skill 2 for you to become distorted (cant be damaged)

You might also want to upgrade your armor up to your level specially your weapons.

Also dont be afraid of using your F1-4 skills, there are many ways for you to quickly get 3 illusious out and shatter them all up in a large group of monsters to deal a lot of damage. Tho personally i use that mostly to finish them off.

You get stronger as you level up of course, every class does.
But even as a lvl 80 mesmer you will still be a light type armor class that can use melee attacks.

Also, mesmers are one of the harder classes to play (its not that hard..but its deff not as noob friendly as some other classes )

Noob friendly classes such as warrior or guardian have some sort of permanent running speed boost, permanent health regeneration as well as boons that give them regeneration and have spamable skills that lets them deal damage to more than 1 target.

Mesmers dont have a permanent movement boost, they dont have a permanent regeneration and they can barely gain health without using their healing skill.

They also have a harder time continuously attacking a larger group of monsters.

Saying that, mesmers do have a lot of utility other classes dont have such as reflection, stealth, creating portals, party wide stun breakers and condition clense (great for dungeons and pvp ) just to name a few.
