At low levels, you can’t go wrong with power for any class, including mesmer. Just stack all the power you can and it makes the low level game very easy. My typical method for a new alt is to map all the towns first; now you’re L9 or L10.

I’ll then buy a set of armor and weapons. Armor all “mighty” (power). Same for weps. Stuff runes with +10 power in each slot. Make sure each rune is different from each other. That way the (1) slot on each rune will take effect (which is what you want). You don’t want or need the (2) slot on a rune to be in effect instead of the (1) slot.

Now go out and kill and have fun goofing around and figure out what the class can do.

Once I hit 14 on any class, I buy a set of green armor & weapons. I upgrade the armor every 12 levels. Weapons every 6. You can spend more on rare stuff if you like, but I found that I out-level it too fast to be worth it.

As far as relying on reflect, I’m not sure what they mean. It’s a great utility that helps out in WvW and in some PvE spots, but it’s not a “must have, always slot” utility. The only utility I never remove is decoy.

Once you’re 80 or nearly 80, you’ll be able to solo tough veterans and easy champions without any problem. That’s pretty much true for any class, though. I haven’t found a class yet that can’t solo champions — not all of them, of course, but there are a lot of “easy” champions out there.

PvE? Don’t use the scepter. It’s great for PvP but PvE mobs don’t use enough abilities for confusion to really work well.
Rely on reflect? Erm I rely on evasion if anything. Using the trait that allows clones to spawn on dodge roll I can quickly amass some shatter fodder. I agree feedback is lovely against range mobs.

Try to use your combo fields. If you throw down a chaos storm with the staff, get inside it and use phase retreat to give yourself some chaos armor. If you use a staff it’s generally a good idea to be close because of the bouncing effect of winds of chaos. Conversely range is best for the greatsword obviously.

Best thing you can do is learn what you need to take out a mob. If it uses range a lot try to use feedback, if it’s a melee monster you can work in blink or decoy to help you kite.
Just try to be adaptable and you will have no problem.

I’m only level 55 on my Mesmer but…
Staff and GS is a really good combo to use until you start getting different gear and find out your play style with the class. I say that not to distract you from that combo but because of the differences between the 2 weapons.

Staff = Condition / Shatter builds – My current pve stats are geared for this (i use scepter and focus for the weapon swap)
GS = Power builds – (i use sword / pistol for the weapon swap)

I’m crazy tho and scepter isn’t the best weapon out there but when you open up with a staff and let the condidtions build up, pop your phantasms, wait, shatter and switch. The Scepter is a great back up with the “clucky” dodge (clone at the end), the chain on 1 gives a clone and the off hand gives a 3s stealth (you “explode” coming out of it) and and phantasm.. its a great pve leveling combo with lots of phantasms and clones. Champions are now solo-able (takes FOREVER mind you) for me now after level 45ish.

But at the end of the day, it’s whatever (combo) you find the most fun. If you haven’t tried Sword/pistol with your GS, may i suggest that you do =) (sword/sword is good too, but personally i find the pistol offhand a tad better)

The Tyrians (TT) – Darkhaven (U.S.)

Level 80 and I love love love GS and Staff together. I run dungeons and WvWvW with these two weapons and they synergize very well with each other. I use this for a shatter build.

If you are interested in my build you can PM me and I will gladly explain what skills/traits and gameplay.

it’s a fun build. I won’t say I am the best by any means but I am successful and have a blast.
