I started playing last night and I’m only level five trying to figure out what I’m doing but when it comes to gear when should I be looking to upgrade as a Mesmer? What stats should I be looking for?

What sort of gear is there? When can I start playing PvP.

In my previous MMO’s I’ve played PvP healers… rush in heal until spotted, get ganked, rush in again, Res, heal… rinse and repeat but since the holy trinity is gone, I’m trying to find my place in Guild Wars 2 and I thought Mesmer would be a mighty fine place to start.

Although when I started out I have to say my doubles appeared to confuse me more than it did the target.

Oh and Skill Points? What’s that all about?

Sorry to many questions at once

This should get u started: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7eZ0NNd7b60

sPvP aka GW2 BG’s, scales u up to lvl80 and unlocks all traits/skills, its called “heart of mist” check the gw2 wiki to get u started.

WvW scales u also up, but as mesmer i recommend at least lvl20-40, so u have access to some very good PvP traits.

I enjoy a feedback/greatsword build in WvW, but will try to modify it for confusions. In WvW u see zergs all the time, so ae dmg/effects are nice.

A mesmer is a fun to play class, u can do a lot of crazy stuff, but u need to read this forum and guides/videos to know all the nice tricks we can do. Some tooltips are also still wrong and traits don’t work correctly.

Have fun!

Gear is split into three categories (light, medium, and heavy). You will want to find light armor and just equip the best upgrades as you go along. Stats aren’t a huge deal early on in terms of finding specific ones to focus on. Traits will help you in that area a bit more once you hit level 11 and buy the manual.

As the poster above me indicated you can start PVP basically as soon as you finish the tutorial (level 2). Structured PVP is a great way to get a feel for each profession at level 80 to see which playstyle you like.

Skill points unlock your utility abilities. They are in tier format and you unlock the next tier by unlocking a set amount of abilities in the current tier. This will make sense when you are in game. Basically you pick which abilities sound most appealing to you and unlock them. By the time you reach 80 I believe you will have enough points to unlock them all so don’t worry about missing out on one.

In sPVP all of them are available so you can fiddle with each to see how they work in combat. A few are must haves (Feedback comes to mind). Granted I am only level 17 on my Mesmer so he is still a work in progress.
