Not surprised at all. Immediate multiple secondary professions after the expansion goes online can potentially make balance a total mess.
But I do hope the secondary is not strictly an expansion over the original. I hope it will be more of a choice between the two, depending on situations and personal taste.
Basically, by choosing secondary profession, you gain some nice weapon and slot skills but get some of your old profession mechanics altered as well. Rangers lose their pets, mesmers can’t shatter etc. On top of that, you have the same number of trait points. Even though you probably get more trait options in your secondary, you can’t gain an advantage.
Rangers are currently keeping pets as shown in the traailer

Hm, thought this might be the case, but hoped it wouldn’t, though I guess there are reasons for this. Despite it, there may be pros and cons to specializing so it might not be forced on us, and they leave room to expand specializations as well as add new weapons to classes.
Over all, somewhat sad, but not too disappointed.
Well as we know the new specialization adds shield to the Mesmer’s weapon set, I have my fingers loosely crossed that either:
- Shield is not the only new weapon we will be able to use with the specialization and that we haven’t been shown half of our new weapon skills already
- Existing weapon skills will be altered depending on the specialization selected.
But I can’t lie when I say I’m disappointed that we’re only getting one specialization. Nothing special about one new option for the whole Mesmer community.
(also kitten it I’m nearly done making Quip, COME ON main-hand pistol).
I don’t want to be the guy who complains about things before we have all the information but it really seems Mesmer is getting the shaft with this. One specialisation means 1 new weapon, Ranger, Engineer and Necromancer are all getting 5 new weapon skills that will most likely fill a hole that players of those classes have been asking for, Mesmers only get 2 skills on a off hand weapon instead of the new mainhand we have asked for and needed for variety.
