Mesmer
Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns has seen many a chronomancer survive a killing blow and seize victory. Alacrity has improved the mesmer’s party support game-wide, but we’ll be bringing alacrity a bit more in line and making it easier to balance while keeping it a staple of the chronomancer elite specialization. Additionally, we’ll be improving upon the scepter, which will be receiving updates through skills, functionality, and traits.

So alacrity nerf, and scepter buff. What do you think?

edit: forgot to add that part which is a general change, but of special relevance to us:

while resurrecting allies or stomping enemies, the effects of quickness and slow will no longer have an effect

I was just about to post this glad I checked before doing so. What I see this meaning is duration on Alacrity being reduced or them reducing how much it reduces the CD.

“bringing alacrity a bit more in line” = “we’re gonna nerf the hell out if it because mesmer”.
It’s only gonna stay “a staple of the chronomancer elite specialization” because there’s gonna be nothing left to make it desirable. Chronos are only brought on raids because of the alacrity. Their dps is so terrible that they aren’t suited to other roles. I can’t even convince people to let me play condi team on my chrono. Unless they fix our dps issues, this is gonna suck.

It’s such a strange post. They point out the issue with chronos (“many a chronomancer survive a killing blow and seize victory”) in pvp, and their response is to nerf alacrity? GG anet, gg.

Buff to scepter could be really, really great. That is, if they weren’t nerfing alacrity again.

Edit: meanwhile, the top dps class (ele) gets another buff. woo.

Edit 2: “We’ve been enjoying watching all of the scrapper gyros buzzing around in the jungle” <— WTF? Scrapper is garbage in pve, what scrappers are they seeing buzz around the jungle???

Until it’s clear that the replacement is not an aoe cleanse or some kind of persistent cleanse without the 90% hp requirement of the old diamond skin, I can’t assume that this will be a good thing.

I don’t think we can assume anything of the sort.
Anet’s history with Ele shows a knee-jerk “ele is fine” or “buff ele,” with an occasional nerf a la icebow.
Anet’s history with Mesmer shows a kneejerk “nerf mesmer nao,” with an occasional buff a la June 23rd and Chrono.

Ambiguous statements that can be taken either way are therefore more likely to be a buff or mixed bag for ele, and a nerf or mixed bag for mesmer.

But going ahead and buffing ele offensive capabilities seems quite bizarre considering the state of the game.

3 big things that bothered me most:

-Balance announcement made on pvp sub forum (it says alot about their balance route)
-Only buff mentioned was scepter.
-Mesmer paragraph was the only one with a flavour text. Probabily to fill more lines/to stay true to that image about how Anet classes looked like from outside, being mesmer a girly purple cosmetic class only, trololol.

To be more in depth, alacrity nerf might result in 50% nerf of mesmer utility. Being the only thing mesmer brought in pve (utility), with the increase of ranger/ele offensive capabilities, quickness might not make it to hold up the only slot mesmer have and push him out from pve scene again.

In pvp alacrity and res capabilities nerf = mesmer bunker nothing more than a dead weight to hold points. Will the “old” shatter mesmer make it? Doubt it in it current state.

Still hoping thats not it for balance. One thing giving me hope was a dev post about balance was made with all game modes in mind. (Yet it kinda evens up with post on pvp sub-forum).

my thoughts:

ele – no diamond skin rather condi cleanse probably with cd. but more dmg. so sc/f burst 100-0 doing bomback

mes – alacrity nerf from 0.66 to 0.33. shield will the the only weapon without a trait of cd reduction. scepter get increase duration on torment. wow . no mtd buff so no condishatter unless scepter #3 will do 12 confusion stacks. #2 10 torment, #1 twice the stacks . we dont need duration we need burst condi dmg.

engi – the only class they dont know what to do with. probably reduce its healing effectiveness and protection but nothing else

guard – traps no longer daze or cd on the daze of 10 sec nothing else

necro – will get movement trait i guess

thief – more AA pressing 1111111 nice anet. what about pistol and condi builds?

warrior – full rework as many players ditched them so the will enter the meta with ease with dmg buff and sustain untill ppl will QQ again

so my predictions
qq on ele burst dmg
qq on warrior sustain (the new scarper )
qq on thief with still less sustainability but will be great in 1v1 till ppl will qq about it
qq on mesmer – no fast res, no fast stomp no alacrity so we dont need them as support in pvp . we will see comeback to power shatter for the elite players

Not too concerned about the coming alacrity nerf, I’m sure it will still be powerful.

Scepter buff sounds promising; I’m already pretty happy with scepter in the build I run and can’t wait to see what they are going to introduce.

So alacrity nerf, and scepter buff. What do you think?

While it is just a broad preview it is obvious that other classes will see bigger changes.

Personally, I’m fine with a reaonsable nerf to Alacrity and a buff to Scepter is great and all. But if that’s all I’m rather disappointed. There is so much stuff that could and should be adressed:

Traits and Utilities

  • Interrupt traits are still pretty useless in PvE .
  • Signets could probably need their CDs shaved a bit to be worthwhile.
  • Duelling is still a mess conceptually, especially on the Adept tier.
  • Mistrust is still a joke.
  • Harmonious Mantras is underperforming and I still feel that the former ‘Empowered Mantras’ part of the trait is more suitable for Signets than Mantras anyway. I would love to see what happened if Mantras could trigger Distortion instead of Signets.
  • Most Mantras have been unattractive for quite a while.
  • Manipulation Mastery still screws up MI.
  • Most Manipulations have been in a miserable state for a while.
  • Without Inspiration Mesmers are way too vulnerable to conditions.
  • Glamours have also been underperforming for a while. Temporal Enchanter didn’t help (Resistance is nice but the cooldowns are too high, Super Speed is pointless most of the time). Even after the Alacrity nerf Wells are likely to outperform Glamours supportwise. Which they shouldn’t. Never ever.
  • Healing Prism…
  • Ineptitude and Malicious Sorcery should probably be merged. But maybe this won’t be necessary after the next patch.

Weapons
Many OHs just look outdated when compared to Shield.

  • Magic Bullet could easily do with a shorter cooldown or an improved functionality.
  • Illusionary Riposte is so underwhelming right now it could need a complete rework. And that’s comming from someone who played Sw/Sw for ages.
  • Illusionary Mage… oh dear.
  • Temporal Curtain really really needs to be higher to properly reflect stuff. Shouldn’t be that hard to implement.

Aaaaand… our sustained damage is still garbage.

This post might sound overly pessimistic. Mesmers have seen quite a few significant changes with and shortly before HoT. For example, I feel that DE has indeed become less mandatory which is great. However, some structural issues (e.g. Interrupt traits) remain and overall Mesmer utilities are rather crappy.

As I said earlier, I’m fine with Alacrity being shaved. However, where does it leave us? Most things Mesmers bring ot the table haven’t been in demand before HoT and won’t be in demand now. Mesmers will still be wanted for Alacrity. But Alacrity might no longer be good enough to save Mesmers a spot. Even if it still did, Mesmers will remain without any significant build diversity. There is not much excitement in going from portal or veil bot to Alacrity bot.

Revenant: We want decrease the strength of autoattacking for damage.

Thief: We want thieves to autoattack for their damage.

Classic quality balance vision here. Anyway…

Nerfs to alacrity will likely impact PvE more than PvP. Hopefully it won’t be to the extent of reconsidering the necessity of a chrono in a party.

Buffs to scepter will likely increase its strength as a 1v1 condie dueling weapon; a role it’s already strong at. It’s highly unlikely that the buffs will address the actual problems with scepter: zero control utility, abysmal multi target capability, and an autoattack that feels monstrously sluggish.

Also noted is a distinct lack of mention about torch improvements.

I forgot an important part of the announcement, of direct concern to mesmers/chrono

while resurrecting allies or stomping enemies, the effects of quickness and slow will no longer have an effect

Else, I personally think alacrity+quickness are strong enough in PvE that a reasonable nerf to alacrity won’t make the mesmer useless in a party.

My advice about sigils:
Interrupt always was a subpar version of blind in pve. Now with breakbars is even worse.
In pvp is where they shine, yet this sigils are not available in pvp and most are meaningless (3s might for example) except (and maybe since we cant test them) the draining one and the boon steal.
This sigils could give a push to interrupt mesmer. Yet all the good traits about interrupt are so spread and chrono being mandatory to fade mesmer shatter/phantasm lacks apart from it utility (not forgetting shield#5 best rupt skill). Nonetheless i would like to give them a try at pvp.

Any nerf to alacrity won’t make mesmer less fun to play if done right.

There are 5 ways they can nerf/change alacrity just off the top of my head:
1) Change Shield uptime
2) Change well uptime
3) Change personal uptime on +50% trait or shatters
4) Actually change the rate of CD reduction
5) Wild card change like shifting the minor trait to major or something along those lines.

“Alacrity has improved the mesmer’s party support game-wide, but we’ll be bringing alacrity a bit more in line and making it easier to balance while keeping it a staple of the chronomancer elite specialization. "

I think they will reduce the effect to 40-50% instead of 66% but that won’t make it not viable or worth it. (“More in line” with other CD traits) The “game-wide” comment sounds like they are actually keeping in mind both PvP and Raid balance. How do you make something EASIER to balance in two different game modes (without splitting since Anet hates splitting)? Reduce total amount of skills that apply alacrity BUT make the application of it consistent (or just consistent for the game mode you are balancing for.) All’s well that ends well is a terrible trait that promotes spamming wells for the traits rather than the wells effects and I hope it goes away. If they make the shield phantasm the main source of group alacrity, then this will mean mesmers can bring utilities besides wells while still supporting their group just fine in raids. It’s a nerf to PvP in the sense that phantasms don’t survive nearly as long without that 95% dmg reduction or focus fire. If they remove ALL alacrity besides the shatter trait but make the shatter trait AOE alacrity (or make this a GM trait), I would also be happy with this. In fact, I would say this would be more fun to play than spamming wells since shatters are the “class mechanic.” It would also be easier to balance kittenters are worst sustain DPS but better team buffing while phantasms would be the focus on personal DPS. Or you could even go condi shatter and still provide alacrity. There are ways to make chrono more fun to play while balancing for both game modes.

While I do want interrupt sigils in PvP, be careful for what you wish for. Shocking aura for example, or even better auto attack+ headshot+PI on thief will make some classes besides mesmer very strong at interrupting and sustaining. The lifesteal sigil is ~1.1k health with no ICD. You can use them in WvW or test on mobs without breakbars.

Edit: shocking aura vs clones specifically would give ele so much sustain with sigil of draining.

Since GW1 the whole Mesmer concept has been THE profession I’ve enjoyed. Basically, if I can’t play Mesmer, I don’t play.

But it truly is depressing about the seemingly “double standard” that happens with it.

- Adding a 1 second delay to “Into the Void”, but yet DH get high damaging instant cast traps AND grant them stabilty AND lets give them an “unblockable” pull to utilize said traps.

- Add a delay & bug fix to Sword #3 clone into Illusionary Leap. Meanwhile lets give Thieves and Revenant and instant “shadowstep” that can pass thru walls and stone, ignoring immobolize effects AND doing damage in the process

- And still to this day.. Consume Plasma is still a thing. How about letting Thieves steal Consume Plasma from Elementalist? You know the profession that ACTUALLY has accesss to all those boons. Maybe then Ele’s wouldn’t rule the roost so much.

Sorry, my frustration with this game is getting too much. Not sure how much longer I’ll be around. Tired of all the disappointment.

Else, I personally think alacrity+quickness are strong enough in PvE that a reasonable nerf to alacrity won’t make the mesmer useless in a party.

The math is quite easy here. As soon as Alacrity+Quickness don’t make up for our crappy DPS it won’t matter that it’s unique. Considering how Alacrity+Quickness synergizes in the current meta build this could easily happen since there is not much that can be shaved off of 0.75-1s effects which massively interact which each other.

The only reasonable approach would be reworking our sources of Alacrity and Quickness to reduce the kind of interaction which makes the current meta build so good and leaves all other builds in the dust.

In pvp is where they shine, yet this sigils are not available in pvp and most are meaningless (3s might for example) except (and maybe since we cant test them) the draining one and the boon steal…

I love interrupt gameplay but right now I couldn’t care less. In PvP, skillful interrupt gameplay is close to impossible due to different reasons. Most interrupts happen randomly which makes this kind of playstyle less rewarding. Ultimatively, it also makes those Sigils no different than any Sigil which triggers on crit or on hit. In PvE… well… it just doesn’t matter here. Because Breakbars.

That aside, if we are actually talking about bringing back an interrupt playstyle it should come through innate capabilities of our class (e.g. traits and utilities) and be more in line with the CD-effect of Powerblock (pitty it still doesn’t work on Thieves…). Same goes for our boon ripping capabilities (Nullfield, Arcane Thievery, etc.). Sadly, the only worthwhile boon rip is stuck in Domination which we currently can’t access due to the need of Chronomancy and Inspiration.

…If they remove ALL alacrity besides the shatter trait but make the shatter trait AOE alacrity (or make this a GM trait), I would also be happy with this. …

I’d probably prefer this over the current Well spamming. However, one issue would remain: It heavily favours the Illusions traitline because of the cooldown reduction. What if there was a trait which granted Alacrity to nearby allies when an Illusion is created? It would work with a variety of traits, utilities and also synergize with our weapons. It might actually create some build diversity.

Alacrity aside, I’d love to see more Quickness and Slow on vanilla Mesmer. I also feel that ANet misses out on other unique class characteristics and abilities like boon removal and Distortion.

Eh, kinda concerned about the mesmer note:

Alacrity will hit bunker mesmer the most. Fair enough. It should also hit shatter a bit, which I’m not really sure needs a nerf.

And while that’s not inherently bad, I’m skeptical about something taking it’s place. Mesmer is still a pretty terrible class for conditions. PU condition was a terribly cheesy build that only really worked in WvW and I don’t think that scepter buffs alone will make it work.

We all knew Alacrity was going to get the nerf. How much remains to be seen, and I’m ok with it for the good of the game. I do like that quickness resses are now gone along with slowed stomps.

Now onto what I feel (and I’ll be making enemies here) to be very alarming. Any buff to scepter makes me scared. I’d rather see Sword buffs on both MH and OH. Maybe a something for focus as well.

Not scepter. Let’s steer our beloved class to a less cancerous land where skill matters.

If it gets reduce in quality (66% is no longer the bonus but lower, wich would mean it’s no longer a mirror of Chill!), it will be relative boring, less impact full (and thus strategical), and will make pve even more of a chore in mesmer.

If there is a nerf, do it on durations (perhaps best the ‘when a well ends’ trait, removed). The other alacrity sources seems competent, and skillfull requirement to get best out of it (like shatter, etc).

In terms of traits, most of the lines work well together except the illusion line which seems to be underwhelming at this point with the introduction of the chronomancer specialization.
The problem with this line is that it relies too heavily on other trait lines,

Persistence of memory and illusionist’s celerity are overshadowed by the chronomancer trait line which utilizes alacrity.

The pledge cd reduction relies on stealth, which isn’t that viable since the Mesmer doesn’t rely on stealth and is ultimately negligible.

Ineptitude only works with blind so you either bring dueling and blind on shatter but this trait doesn’t allow you to blind a foe more than once during the interval.. or you bring sword offhand which gives you a blind with the #4 skill.

The improvement it brings is minor compared to the domination.

While the illusion line does bring condi damage to the table, the Mesmer does not have utilities or weapons that synergize well with the line. I feel as though it should be able to synergize with the chaos or domination line more so than it does, focusing on condition damage, evades such as phase retreat and maybe interrupts.

In terms of weapons, scepter definitely needs to be reworked as stated previously. The block skill seems out of place with the Mesmer play style and I feel like the shadow step should work more like phase retreat than #2 on sword main hand.

Again, sword off hand skill #4 seems out of place as well and could be changed to bring more utility since the Mesmer playstyle is more suited towards avoiding getting hit.

Can’t they put Confusion on crit back in so condi can actually have a choice of weapons to use instead of being forced to use scepter?

Nope, but we can buff scepter in a meaningless way some more!

I only hope they are not going to “improve” Malicious Sorcery the same way they “improved” The Pledge and Chaotic Dampening.

I’m fine with a nerf to bunker mes in pvp. However I worry that a change to alacrity will just put all non bunk mes specs back into it’s old placement where it just didn’t have enough to keep up with other meta builds even more so when you consider some are getting direct damage buffs.

All’s well that ends well is a terrible trait that promotes spamming wells for the traits rather than the wells effects

Come on this is not true and you know that

You cast your wells for the effect they have (alacrity, quickness, distorsion, aoe heal\remove condition) and WHILE casting it you give alacrity trough this trait.

It could be something you don’t like but the reason they’ve taken “casting wells” rather than “shatter” or “doing x” as main alacrity source it’s because in this way to take advantage of alacrity you are forced to be on a wells build.

If you remove this trait you remove alacrity from the game, if you replace this trait with something else like “put 2 sec alacrity on shatter” you would have same alacrity as now with free utility choice, aka more build diversity and some of them would be something really op xD

I’d like too, ofc, who wouldnt?

Anyway coming back to dev block, i was expecting something like alacrity’s reduction cd reduced from 40% to 20%.

I wasn’t expecting it because it is a deserved nerf or a good thing to do.

I was expecting it because condie war is (pve side) a ridicolous pathetic op build that should be nerfed but, since i play since release, i know that when there is a ridicolous pathetic op build that is played from many people (usually warriors) anet never nerf it.

Anet nerf the less played class around the op class to reduce party\raid dmg as chrono right now xD

Having a condiezerker meta with warrior covering 3-5 spot on 10 in raid (aka 30%-50%) and chrono 1 (aka 10%) and read about a “balace” patch who nerf chrono and buff warrior is something who makes me feel being stupid just for having read it.

On a side note this game deserve to split pvp balance from pve balance, we need skill\trait to have different effect, duration and balance between the 2 games modes.

I start being tired to have pve ruined from crap pvp change while pvp itself has always been in so bad state that barely reach 30 view on “e-sportz” match.

Slipt them or remove one of the 2 game modes, keep balancing them togheter is the only way to unbalance both of them

Seriously everyone needs to stop thier kittening. Since June 23rd every big patch has made us top dog in this game.

Haha what?

Think about the actual classes that are hurting (warrior/thief).

You mean the ones that are described as getting multiple substantial buffs in the preview?

I’m thinking your version of reality needs a second opinion.

No multiple substantial buffs were revealed. Stop with the drama. I mean someone stated that thieves will wreck us just by clicking on our names again….seriously they discussed buffing AAs….

The most alarming thing I saw was the buffing of necro/druid. Not feeling that but we’ll see.

So just cut it out and let’s see what happens.

Buffbot class gets its buffs nerfed and its most pathetic weapon slightly buffed (inconsequential because any condi weapon that has no burning is a worthless condi set as burning is the bulk of competitive condi DPS).

Who’s surprised, PvP balance still drives balance decisions at the expense of PvE.

You would think that instead of thief autoattacks, which already do 30-40% more damage than mesmer mainhand sword autoattacks (its strongest DPS weapon), it would be the mesmer and ranger and elementalist water/earth attunements getting their pitiful autoattacks looked at.

But nope, they’re deadset on once again making thieves kings of damage, and guess what’s gonna happen. Replace eles/revenants with thieves.

There’s no bigger asset to a group than DPS, they’ve virtually learned nothing.

I just hope that you won’t be the one saying, that no one gave a warning before the patch.

I get it, doomsayers are annoying, but I believe sharing those upcoming changes are actually meant to get some sort of feedback from community and see how it reacts. At least I hope so.

You mean when PvP consisted of 5 cele eles on each team and there response was to nerf Mesmer Greatsword?

Please, more love for the scepter mesmer, the damage conditions is very poorly assessed, especially confusion and torment in Pve.

That was after they nerfed our mantra CDs. Also 1v1 then mesmer could kill ele. The problem was stacking ele > all

Anet hasnt had good track record when it comes to Mesmers, you cant blame us for feeling negative. ANd I think you are underestimate how much “buffs” thieves will receive.

I’m calling it, Mesmers and Revenants will be nerfed out of meta.
