I’m a gamer whose “career” spans 20,000 hours across GW1 from Factions to EoTN, and WoW that OTHER MMO from TBC to Cata. The competition aside, I’ve watched the mesmer community for a long time across both iterations of GW and for the longest while, I simply couldn’t “get it”. I attempted mesmering in GW1 and felt like a cheap elementalist knock-off who had armor-ignoring damage like a necromancer (chaos damage ftw, but that’s another story). I checked out mesmer in GW2’s beta, saw great improvement from its predecessor but still couldn’t figure out the class, and went to main a necro, warts’n’all.
I recently rolled a mesmer and am having a blast playing it. I know you’re demoralized from consistent nerfs, and as a necromancer and former WoW pally, I can empathize. However, it’s in this weakened state that we find our strengths. When a class is weak, its players will make it strong . Eventually the devs will buff the class, as well, and leave the players who suffered through the nerf days in a better place.
Now is the best time to roll a mesmer if you have never played one before, or if it’s been a long while since you have. The class is weak, so you will have to learn your own ferocity & resourcefulness. The string of nerfs, in my eyes, is only a slow redesign of the class.
The class & its players have earned my respect. As it sits, it is a high risk class that punishes missteps.
You are my hero -
I remember when Rangers were hopeful of buffs. Don’t worry, it will pass and give way to quiet acceptence
Awww this is a really nice post!
While I love joking about this forum feeling like a suicide forum, its somehow made me go back and appreciate my mesmer a bit more. I also have been maining necro recently, and ele before that and there are so many things I absolutely love about this class.
Sure I may 2-shotted by thieves and warriors, but it takes many deaths and perserverance to learn and improve. I’ve also loved watching mesmer videos on youtube (as for necro as well) and it makes me sad that my laptop is too bad to record my own and dazzle everyone with my great taste in music and edited footage of skilled gameplay.

I may have just shed a few tears, awesome post / thread.
Still possible to go even further downhill. I won’t list anything here because I don’t want to give Anet any bad ideas.
But, also possible to get better from here, so who knows.
For me, sticking with sword+torch shatter now through this difficult patch almost guarantees better skill once ileap, image and possibly blurred frenzy are fixed.
Yes, things can get worse. EVERYTHING can always get worse, and you’re a fool if you believe otherwise. However, Mesmers will get a buff eventually. It may take nerfing the class until a complete redesign is needed, but a buff will come eventually. Blizzard had similar issues with Retribution paladins during TBC. It got to the point that nobody would even think about grouping with a ret pally, and often would kick on sight (sound familiar?). Resourceful players (such as myself) learned what strengths remained, and focused on those. It led to some wild builds that took finesse to play, but were effective nonetheless (I, for example, took to gearing mine like a rogue with a greatsword).
In Guild Wars 1, shortly after Nightfall was released, there was a very heavy-handed “balance update”. In a nutshell, it buffed elementalists to unbelievable levels while nerfing ritualists to the ground (eles had a variety of spammable skills that caused burning, every summon skill ritualists had caused exhaustion/overcast). Similarly, ANet nerfed GW1 necromancers heavily as well, by gutting the Soul Reaping mechanic. Instead of gaining energy=SR every creature death, it only triggered once every 5 seconds. With no way to regain energy to fuel expensive skills (most were 10 or 15 energy, quite a few were 25; normal necros had a 40-50 energy pool and regained 4 pts every 3 seconds), necros were difficult to play as well. Players got resourceful against the Searing Flame eles and started running builds to combat the burning condition. Ritualists would focus less on summons & more on other skills with a couple of key spirits. Necromancers, in the wake of their nerf, would secondary elementalist for the energy glyphs.
Eventually, ANet took some of the strength away from elementalists. While still strong, they were not overwhelming like they once were. The exhaustion nerf on ritualists was reverted, in favor of a less draconian balance change. Same with the necromancer— with SR only triggering once every 5 seconds, it was very difficult to play, so a compromise was made: SR would now trigger up to 3 times every 15 seconds. At its core, the nerf still remained, but being able to trigger multiple times before the CD was a godsend (think Mantra of Recovery: would you rather use it once with a 5 sec cd, or twice with a 10-sec? With the 10-sec, you can activate it twice, allowing a better chance for the fight to be over with or nearly finished before incurring the cooldown).
Where there’s a will, there’s a way. As clichéd as it is, it’s the truth. Use the weakened state to sharpen your skills and you’ll be better for it when the mesmer gets its time in the sun.
So… how does a Mesmer punish the missteps of a zerg in WvW?
So… how does a Mesmer punish the missteps of a zerg in WvW?
I think he meant that the class punishes users of the class for their misteps, not the class punishing others for their misteps, which is how things should be.
The only thing mesmer punishes is the people playing them by giving them unreliable class mechanics and zero DPS.
I’m quite happy with my Mesmer as my main. I don’t pve and tpvp but for everything I do, mostly wvw roam I find Mesmer to be very good maybe even a bit over powered. I can surf a zerg good enough and most of the pve content is a joke anyway other than FTOM but I never do FTOM so I don’t care.
I FREAKING LOVE this post — this is fantastic. Let’s do it!

This is precisely what I meant. Now, it appears that ANet has moved the mesmer away from the maniplative/control class it was in GW1 to the illusionist it is now (seeming to fit better with the lore of Kitah creating an illusory army to fight for her). Read: the GW2 mesmer relies more on clones/phantasms, “illusions”, than fast-casting and timing as its predecessor.
In my opinion, the latter would require more self-discipline to play and be less forgiving than the former. There are easy ways of manipulating others, but persevering an illusion requires much more work.
Not everyone does WvW or sPvP. Mesmer is and has always been strong in PvE so regardless of what you think of PvP balance, there’s really nothing stopping you from rolling mesmer for any content that a mesmer actually needs to be rolled and leveled and geared for.
there is no such thing as a weak class in gw2. just whining ppl with all their complaining about not being able to play their “good ol’ builds”. personally i main mesmer i love it and there is no kittenin nerf that could make me reroll.
i played d/d ele when it was weak, now i am playing it after the recent buffs and its a blast! altho, i doubt its gonna be same w mesmer

when your professional lvl will up you will see problems around mesmer. At your current state “pink butterflies!!!! I like those blink effects and GS at my sexy mesmer!” such messages are okey.

Wow. Never saw it from that point of view, I must have been blind by anger. Like, you are absolutely right? We should stop crying about what we don’t have and start appreciate the things we already got, even if it seems that we’re “not as powerful” as other classes might be. So what. It’s our game, don’t care about the others. You’re here because you love playing a Mesmer, then what are you waiting for? Do what makes you fun, play your Mesmer with your heart. And kitten, show the world that pink butterflies hurt!
I think people has taken the iLeap nerf too much serious. For a lot of people it was the last straw from the last year of nothing but bugs and general nerf of the class, but we still have our strengths.
We’re still really strong in roaming; rangers, thiefs and engis would kill to have at least an essential skill like veil in zergs; and in PvE we still have our unique mechanics.
Yes, we’re not in a good position, but it’s also true ours is not such horrible as some people want to see.

tried sword today when roaming, it was terribad, like, sword 3 connected just 30% of the time, it died all the time to aoes, or just leaped away from enemy instead leaping to him.
no more sword for me. i just regret wasting gold for jormags breath skin
I’m crying. Mesmer for life.

I also hate that stupid nerf, it has been the death of sword as a roaming weapon. Just finished Rodgort only 2 weeks before the nerf, and having an ascended infinite light…
But I’ve been roaming a little bit with a power PU GS/Staff and I have had quite a lot of fun: taking camps within 1:30 min, running from people, being able to survive against a hambow+camp guards, melted condi interrupt thiefs, I laugh at necros…
While I don’t deny that your logic can be true in some ways, it doesn’t help for those of us that no longer find mesmer fun to play because of what it can’t do and because of what has been lost. I’m already acutely aware of its advantages, disadvantages, and how much it stands to gain from a buff. Because of this awareness, I’ve chosen to go play something that feels less like smacking my head on a brick wall.

honestly, i wish they would nerf veil to the ground so it only stealths 2 people, so everyone that mentions stupid veil as a reason mes is strong would realize that there is nothing else we got that is unique to the class. problem is that every class can pretty much do what we can but with less effort. yes we got clones, but the bugs make all our stupid ai useless. if they would have at least fixed the ai, things wouldnt look as terrible as they are right now….apart from wvw where ai is useless.
yes, if u roam and 1v1, u might find mesmer strong.i can 1v1 no problem apart from regen war which i cant even kill on my power necro, but a class should never ever been a 1v1 class ever. every single class should be viable in every single game mode. anet stated play how u wanna play. well, i love zergbusting! how about that one…oh thats right i cant on mes cause mes cant deal aoe dmg and ai dies in seconds before dealing dmg. i used to be able to though and it was soooo much fun.
yes glamour was op at the time when people didnt care about condi cleanse, but in the current meta it wouldnt.
we’ve been waiting for more than a year to get a replacement for glamour nerf in wvw, but all we got was bugs, usless things and nerfs. i havent played my mes properly in like 2 months because i cant anymore. ive tried every single build out there. i went from triforce, glam torment hybrid, glass phantasm, glkittenter to pu condi and then pu power, then lockdown builds, tried out all the new traits, even when anet claimed there was a signet mesmer build, i was like well lets see…..not 1 single build felt it was fitting for wvw/ they all sorta did something, but felt like improvising some sort of build that other classes get with less effort.
yes thief is more of a 1v1 class too, but thief is a medium armor class and can burst 1 target down in seconds. if a mes hits my necro in a wvw zerg, i simply move closer to my team where its ai gets killed in 1 second.
yes of course a mes can kill my necro in a 1v1 moment there, but thats why people stay close tho their group so thieves and mes wont gank them.
but yeah my problem is, i want my mes to do what i used to do in wvw again. i want us to be able to deal aoe dmg, move away from veilbotting, deal dmg, get lootbags, tag, and kill mindless zergs.
and btw i would kill to get cc like engi, or burst and low cd’s like thief. mes lacks a role and the role should not be utilitybot, as this is not a role!
The OP has a very good point. What the mesmer is going through now is similar of what the thief class went through for rebalancing. A majority of thieves left, leaving behind only those that were willing to conquer the nerfs and adapt to the changes. Thieves are still a pain in the neck, but no longer for the reasons even the high tier thieves called ‘faceroll cheesy gimmicks’. I’m expecting mesmers to rise up from the ashes.
…As embarrassing as it is, I’m probably a better thief than a mesmer. >.>;

Mesmers have never been in the positions thieves were, or continue to be.

Yeah….that’s not true at all. Unreasonable dodge spam couple with extremely high offense and evasiveness is still a thing. Yeah, S/D got nerfed somewhat…but thieves never had a mass exodus like this, and never have had to contend with over a year of non-stop bugs and nerfs.

Each time we have less options. The iLeap bugfix has remembered me this:
Stuck after Phase Retreat/Blink. DEV: “Fixed some now, will fix some later.”
If we read the tooltip, to work always like the tooltip say, leaving aside the stun break, you need to have an “in range target” to summon the clone…. which is not the case because the skill can be used without it and without summon the clone. With the precedent of iLeap… What will they fix later? You are free to be afraid. After all, we are creative using “Phase Retreat” like we did with “iLeap”.

Meh. It’s kind of a hidden blessing my dualbooted win 8/manjaro hard-drive died Friday night. Since it’s a royal P.I.T.A. to install GW2 in a pure Linux system … at least I don’t get to play my main and realise exactly how bad the poor S.O.B.’s been shafted
I have 6 alts, all of which I have played fractals.dungeons and a lot of Pvp with . I dropped mesmer for a very long time and after coming back to it and looking at how their stats are spread and reminding myself about some of their skills/traits it helped me immensely to look at them with fresh eyes again. So far in PvP I am beginning to wonder why more people don’t play them. I do think some of the skills/traits could definitely be refined and made consistent and some skills have their cooldowns reduced, but all in all I had forgot just how slippery they can be. Having played out a lot of professions and now being a lot more mindful of what their core animations are and typical ways people build them has only made my mesmer play stronger. I will admit this is entirely player side and not to do with the mesmer, but it has certainly improved my mesmer play greatly. The teleports are just too good. It is pretty sweet having those back as part of my play style.

With balance patches slowed to every six months it makes zero sense to suffer that long based on the assumption that the class will be fixed. Based on the previous balancing timetables, the mesmer might be in a good spot by next summer. No thanks.
The mention is just theory/possibility over many..

Human/civil rights.. —> crm customer relationship managment → customer satisfaction..
So game include wvw mode officially right? What is wvw environments.. Tools in wvw roles/modes/specs can be solo roam or small scale roam or large scale roam(zerging) or solo deathmatch as duels can be organized or random encountered.. Or large scaled duels as in obsidan sanc fights (gvg)
Plus gw2 includes pve things and pvp things..
And if everybody already understand state of mesmer in wvw various places..
Plus if anet say in officially that game balances should include pve wvw and pvp systems..
So as @OP mentioned that we should see some fair adaptation to mesmer for all part of game..
However i was telling the all same things since bf got nerfed since more than 1 year ago.
i had hopes that the knowladge/experiance of competitive large scale mesmer will increased that ppl can be away from scrubing.. However same rate is similar to how many competitive mesmer players quiting from game too..
Example what was the reason bf got nerf/bugfixing for all game modes.. However many other classes/skills bugfixes not from tooltip to mechanic, fixes happened to tooltips not game mechanics in buff way..
Lets see future about mesmer ll see it or ll be as the same while they triying to make brow, they removed eye.. ?
Or they ve just absurd goals which most mesmer playing players wont happy since 1andhalg year that always having more unsatisfy..
How about nerfing veil to ground, so try to born mesmer from his ashes? i think it ll be more objective in his goal?
I’ve been an underdog player ever since DAoC. When a class is weak, it’s interesting to experiment with it and find out which elements can still easily give enemies a run for their money.
And one upside is that once change comes around I got a serious headstart from the uphill combat experience.
The dire balance state of the mesmer, as well other classes I play such as necro (mainly for pve balance) has tempted me to look for another MMO to play (with no sub fee). But I really can’t find anything else I’d actually want to play. All the other subless MMOs seem to be korean p2win grindfests. And I’m too busy being a college student to actually pay for something like wildstar or ESO which aren’t even that great, and I honestly don’t think I could handle the grindy ridgid quest based leveling process of themepark MMOs, whereas in GW2 you can do anything and you’ll reach max level in a few weeks if you play enough, every other MMO I quit before max level.
I tried looking into Archeage for its sandboxy nature that seemed cool, but I really don’t think I could go back to an MMO where basic spell attacks have a 3 seconds or longer casting time in which the user is rooted. Their world seems really immersive and interesting, but after experiencing GW2’s combat, I really don’t think I could play such a dated or immobile system, and archeage’s skill lines all look rather boring in my opinion.
In GW2 the combat is so fast paced and mobile and responsive that I couldn’t play any other MMO, and I genuinely like the professions, including the mesmer. Sure its difficult, but my mesmer and necromancer are my favorite things to play ever and I want to stick with them as long as I can.
But I can understand why some of the more veteran and experienced players would quit gw2, as I did from october to may of this year. Other things in life become more important and things get tiring. PvE in this game has gotten really tiring for me after making Howler recently. Now I can only stomach to do 2-3 runs of CoF/SE in a day and Tequatl or the Wurm for my income, and I’ve been focusing on getting better at solo q and WvW. I still need to make 4-5 ascended weapons for my characters, and I’m tempted to make another legendary, but the thought of spanking the spider queen 3 times a day with bad pugs is scaring me to death.
Anyway, I love the mesmer, but its really up to our patience and priorities to decide whether we can stick with this class, and game
Yep,OP,lets show other players that mesmer is STILL OP for them……. and wait for our next nerf.
Yep,OP,lets show other players that mesmer is STILL OP for them……. and wait for our next nerf.
Thats not the point of the post. The point is to play the class we like and become better players as a whole rather then play flavor of the month OP classes that WILL get nerfed.
Anyone thought about an upcoming dungeon with those mortem creatures? There are some of them who are extremly powerful if not interrupted. I repeat it again. Interrupted :o
Anyone thought about an upcoming dungeon with those mortem creatures? There are some of them who are extremly powerful if not interrupted. I repeat it again. Interrupted :o
So you’d take a thief, because headshot is a far better interrupt than anything mesmer has if you’re talking single target….and/or just stack/dps them down like everything else in the game.
It took five years for Anet to overhaul mesmers for gw1 pve. Don’t hold your breath.
I’ve played with mesmer as my main since I started the game a year ago. I also have guardian, warrior, ele, thief and necro at 80.
I would like to think I’m a good mesmer; I know the tricks of the trade in PVE to make dungeons smoother, I can duo Lupi and I’m working on my solo kill for him – both on and off wall. I’ll admit, I don’t really PVP or WVW, so I’ll leave those discussions up to others.
In PVE, there have been so many times that I have been told that other classes are better than mesmer. In the speed running guild that I was recently in, my mentor flat out told me that anything a mesmer could do, another class could do better – a mesmer wasn’t truly needed for anything. Since that point, I’ve started playing guardian more often, and quite honestly, the difference in DPS is quite a bit. I also feel like I’m more support to the group I’m in, instead of just being another body. I think that the recent research done by DNT showing best DPS group compositions really shines a light on the problems that mesmers have as well.
I love my mesmer, and I would love to see the class be considered more viable as an option for PVE. But until the DPS isn’t reliant on a clone that pops as soon as a mob looks funny in the general vicinity of the clone, well… my guard/ele/warrior/thief end up getting played more for dungeons.
It sucks.
No, I’m not high or on any type of drugs.
I believed you…
When a class is weak, its players will make it strong . Eventually the devs will buff the class, as well, and leave the players who suffered through the nerf days in a better place.
Players cannot make a class “strong”, but playing a weaker class may help you to become a better player. Someone playing a mesmer will still be less effective than other players with similar skill level playing, for example, a Thief or Warrior.
The second part looks to me like wishful thinking. Maybe mesmer will be buffed. In the future, and we don’t even have a timeframe for that (2 months? 4? 6? …).
I mostly play in wvw since GW2 started and have made a level 80 mesmer lately (have almost all of the other classes already), but every class insta kill me. I’m using gs, sword/focus with PVT setup. For me, mesmer is means only a utility class, which is lacks of effective fighting abilities. Yeah, its possibly that I still sucks in pvp and don’t know the class enough, but I think a class couldn’t be that weak. However seeing d/d ele that doesn’t get any damage at all and besides that deals a huge amount of damage! I think class balance is still very bad in GW2 and I don’t expect that it will change in the future.
Suffer now, for salvation later – maybe.
Sounds like religion to me.
As an Ele, I agree with the OP. There’s a light at the end of the tunnel and after suffering playing as a nerfed profession for awhile, you’ll be a baws once you finally get buffed back up.
Suffer now, for salvation later – maybe.
Sounds like religion to me.
