The notes section of the Rune page on Wiki says that on-hit effects can trigger when pets are hit as well.

Anyone know what exactly constitutes a “pet” in this case, and most specifically whether illusions and phantasms count? Given the recent Rune of the Ranger “fix” where apparently they don’t count as pets for the purposes of that, I’m unsure.

Being that my Mesmer is a glass cannon, I can’t exactly afford to take many hits, so something with a lower chance of triggering on-hit (like Ogre runes) probably wouldn’t be of much use if its just me taking hits that has a chance of triggering it. But if its my illusions and phantasms, that would be another story.

Nightmare runes only activate when you are hit. Not your clones. I’m not sure if that applies to all runes but if you put two and two together…….

All runes and sigils only apply to the Mesmer. The only exception is when the rune or sigil causes a stat change, that change will automatically be applied to the illusions.
Mesmers attack by:

• weapon skills
• utility skills
• shatter skills

Illusion attack by:

• basic attack chain
• exploding after being overwritten (and when one has a clone death trait).

Hmm. I kind of figured that would be the case.

Is that note on the Wiki just plain wrong in general, then? Or are their actually pets from other classes that DO trigger on-hit effects from Runes? I’ve always thought it was a rather odd feature and questioned whether it was accurate or not, but its been there for a long time.

Some runes unintentionally caused effects on hit to clones such as the nightmare runes and their fear. This has since been nerfed tho I can’t tell you of these runes were.effected by it
