If we could change the color of the magic we do, that would be absolutely insanely cool. I I really don’t like being forced to use this hot pink magic everywhere I go lol.
Maybe if we just got the option to change it between like the default color and like some nice shade of blue, maybe a third color

I like the idea and I’d love the option to do that, more mesmer diversity!
I’d be more than happy with 2-3 color combination, not the full RGB scale :P

But I think it’s just a dream :-3
Pink is definitely very mesmer-ish but sometimes I think it’s a bit too kitten !!

No thanks, I spent too much time collecting every single shade of purple and pink dye. :p

Is it really hot pink? I thought the color was officially “purple cheese.”

Yep, purple is awesome, no need to change it.

That being said, it would be really nasty on server load to have customizable spell colors. It would need to do a full additional render and particle change for every single spell every single time if different spell colors were possible.

That’d not be really necessary, the render is of course client-side so anyone could render it just as smooth as now

If there were 4 colors in total you could send them in 2 bits it’s not like the internet is going to collapse for that, even with millions of users :P

Well, render was the wrong word. Right now all the display is client side, and the server just provides instructions as to which file to pull. If you could modify the colors, the server would have to transmit the color data as well…and the client would have to render each color type individually, so you’d be increasing both server load and client load.

Bad idea all around. I get enough lag in big fights already.

IAMAEGP (I am an ex-graphics engine programmer)

Tinting a texture in a pixel shader is trivial, and has been viable since XBox1 days (where I used this technique, albeit at the cost of some fillrate)

final_colour.rgb = tint.rgb * (src.rgb dot (0.2126, 0.7152, 0.0722)) + src.rgb * tint.a

where tint.rgb is pre-multipled by (1-tint.a)

I very much doubt that would slow down appreciably any semi-modern graphics card (the bottlenecks will be texture, index and vertex memory access not deeply pipelined pixel shader math).

So why not do it? Well there’s a lot of plumbing:

1. The pixel shader needs to know what tint to apply, depending on how their particle system works this may be done via pixel shader constants (cheap but you’d need to bucket your drawIndexPrimitive calls on tint colour), or via vertex shader interpolants
2. Upstream of the pixel / vertex shaders the graphics engine entity representing a particle effect would need a new tint property
3. Depending on how particle effects are spawned, the client side representation for players may need a new property (so the right tint can be used for that player’s particle effects). Alternatively if the particles are spawned server side then the wire format used by the server to tell a client to spawn an effect needs a new property
4. Unless they have a bag of key-value pairs the database schema representing a player’s state needs extending to store this new property
5. Presumably the setting for the tinting would need a new page in the client’s UI with new artwork and translations of any text introduced
6. A new property would have to be added to the wire format used by the client to tell the server about armor tinting options
7. All this would need extensive (and expensive) testing

From an engineering point of view nothing there is terribly hard, but doing it right is a whole bunch of work and for what? Warlocks muuust have green fire, oops sorry wrong game.

This has been suggested before and a rather common ‘counter-argument’ put forth by the most logical of creatures on this earth is you’re not ‘manly’ enough if you don’t like pink/purple…..I kitten ye not. That and some bull kitten about purple being the colour of royalty so we should feel honoured that….w/e basically people who like it don’t want people who don’t like it to feel comfortable (even though people were always asking for the option-not a total redesign). Oh people also say it would be too hard to change the colour of particle effects-waste of resources and what-not.

cough spinal blades+knight power cores cough

Sorry-something was in my throat. Also, didn’t WoW add something you could imbue gear with to have different graphical effects on skills some time ago or something like that? Glyphs I think they were called? Yeeeaaaaah…..WoW managed to survive just fine with different graphical variations (and animations if memory serves) of spells and that was never touted as a ‘cosmetic’ game, just saying.

Glyphs are not graphical variation of the spell, some enhanctments though added special effect to the weapon.
I think howevere that purple is the characteristic colour of mesmers, i wouldn’t like it to be changed :P

Give me silver-grey palette swap and you got me.
+1

Sadly anet won’t do this because of limitations that the game has T.T

what limitations? the game isn’t even graphically demanding and my comp is a basic HP from 2011. if this can run the game on max graphics, I’m sure the game is fine.
