Hey, new to the game and having trouble finding answers about this.

It seems while reading mesmer builds/strats folks make it sound like Chaos storm can give you chaos armor? is that accurate?

In the description for it, It does not list that, I maybe miss understanding it, also does it cause confusion?

It seems to me like in large battles when I have a few mobs, I have maybe noticed both chaos armor, and confusion pop up but Im not 100%?

Chaos Storm is a combo field.
If you use certain combo skills in a combo field, it grants you additional effects. Like Chaos armor in etheral fields.

Check the wiki for combo effects for detailed infos.

To make things easier – If you use Phantasmal retreat (staff #2 skill) from ANY of the fields you cast – you will get Chaos Armor. That includes – Chaos Storm, Null Field, Reflection and time Warp.

You will also get some sort of effect if you do that from other “fields” from other players.

These are called combos – and they are very very VERY useful.

Some tipps about chaos storm that even ppl linked videos of tournament play tend to miss. Do what Xaxir mentioned, never use chaos armour when chaos field going up unless its impossible for you to get into the field (thrown off a wall), after the staff 2 chaos armour weard off use chaos armour on staff befoe switch to s/p or what you prefere.

Also, if you run s/p try stun your opponets or cripple them in the field and get your own kitten in there. A crippled enemy in a field taking dmg from iwarlock, sword nr 2 chaos storm and wracks vaporize.

However, since Phase Retreat was changed recently, this combo has become less reliable and less fun to use because while formerly you retreated in the opposite direction to which you were facing, now, the way you are facing seems to be random where you end up, so it’s always a bit disorienting; plus you go further back than before. Actually a bit of an overall downgrade IMHO.

You now phase retreat opposite the direction your target is facing if I recall correctly.

The Mesmer has two types of combo fields and 3 different finishers. We have 4 ‘ethereal’ combo fields and two ‘light.’ We have 3 of the 4 potential finishers. Currently we lack the “Whirl” finisher.

Veil (utility skill) and Temporal Curtain (Focus 4) are the Light Combo Fields.
Feedback (utility), Null Field (utility), Chaos Storm (Staff 5) and Time Warp (elite skill) make up our Ethereal Combo Fields.

The Prestige (Torch 4) is our only blast finisher. When used in an Ethereal field it creates Chaos Armor on all friendly targets in the area.

‘Phase Retreat’ (Staff 2), and ‘Illusionary Leap’s’ alternate skill ‘Swap’ (MH Sword 3) are the mesmers Leap Skills. When used through or from an Ethereal field you become buffed with Chaos Armor.

The Phantasmal Duelist and Magic Bullet (pistol) are Projectile finishers and will create ‘chaos bullets’ applying random conditions when shot through or into an Ethereal field.

That covers most of the more common mesmer self created combos. Most classes specialize in a certain combo field type and/or combo finisher. The wiki links will provide more details.

Actually if you leap via sword #3 (where you swap with your clone) into our light field you gain retaliation, not chaos armor.

I run staff and sword/focus and use it all the time when I am going to enter melee. Drop your curtain for the light field, and sword #3 (twice) to gain retaliation.

That, with blurred frenzy from sword #2 is very nice. You can then swap back to staff drop staff 5 and retreat out to gain chaos armor.

One of our light fields is bugged and instead acts like ethereal. (I think veil.)

We do have a whirl finisher, the great sword phantasm. If you drop an ethereal field on him he will spread confusion around when he attacks. Or in a light field, he removes conditions.

I wish:

Blink acted as a leap finisher
Mind Stab acted as a blast finisher

Oh man, if mind stab was a blast finisher, that would be epic. I would actually use it regularly instead of just to knock a regen boon off something.

Also, I believe iWarden is also a whirl finisher. He tosses out confounding bolts when in an ethereal field.

Oh yeah! And I actual prefer him, how could I forget?! If mind stab were a blast that would be a blast, but GS with three finishers on it might be over doing it.
